Just got done watching The Hobbit and it made me really want to play an RPG. So I'm looking for suggestions.

I'd like to make a pretty comprehensive list, so any kind of RPG will do. JRPG, WRPG, CRPG, anything. I'd like suggestions of well known staples of the genre as well as hidden gems.

>> No.1314727

Are you looking for RPGs that are like The Hobbit? Because I can think of many that aren't.

This. While it's a JRPG it plays a bit more like a WRPG then anything. With creating your party from the start with no backstory. And might be one of the best JRPG ever made. And Dragon Quest more or less invented the JRPG so any of them works (1 and 2 are a bit annoying with the grinding but after that are amazing games). For PC gaming there's really 2 that made RPGs what it is today and those are Ultima and Wizardry. As for Ultima I say play 4 onward since that's when there was actually a story starts and actually trying to put role playing in their games. Wizardry is mostly just a dungeon crawler but handled in a really hard really fun way.

For the most epic adventure in all of computer RPGs, it has to be the Baldur's Gate series. Original versions not EE rerelease, heavily modded.

BG1 engine sucks, so play Baldur's Gate Trilogy, which is a mod that combines it all into one huge game on the BG2 engine. Also you need various unofficial patches etc.

See http://www.gog.com/news/enhance_the_gameplay_in_your_edition_of_baldurs_gate_from_gogcom for the correct order to install everything.

There are a few RPG series I really can't get into, but why do people go out of their way to say something is pure shit? It's all arbitrary. Why do you care so much if someone else likes something you don't?

That said, it's hard to provide recommendations without having a better idea of what sort of approach and difficulty factor you're looking for. Do you want to play in an open world, or do you want the game to give you clear directions on where to go next? Do you just want to play for the story, or are you okay with challenging bosses and lots of grinding?

Check out PoPoLoCrois. It's not the best game ever but it's very fun and has the feeling of really going on an adventure that a lot of JRPGs don't pull of that well, which I'm guessing is what you're looking for if you've just watched The Hobbit. I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for a lighthearted fantasy adventure, or something of the sort.

PSP version is a watered down version of the two PS1 games with some extra content, but unfortunately the PS1 games aren't translated/don't have a decent guide so unless you know moonspeak PSP will have to do (it's still great, mind you).

I only used the booklet that came with the game. The game manual is usually a must read for a SaGa game. Heck it is even worth doing that for the Gameboy games as well.

They aren't games that hold your hand with constant tutorials. If you want a little help then you take out the game booklet.

The only other JRPG that made me want to check the booklet was Ogre Battle 64. I would rather have my JRPG's be structured this way because it doesn't slow the game down and it isn't insulting my intelligence in which I can always check the instruction manual rather than forced tutorials.

I remember I didn't know how to leave town. I took out the book and it said it in there and bam no issues.

What you mean is "less story" and precisely for people like you they've made SaGa Frontier 2, which actually has one of the most eloquent stories in the entire genre. So much story focus that the game is worse because of it.

Here's a hidden gem for you - Summoner 2. Haven't played anything like it in quite a while. It's from 2002, not oldschool-complicated but most certainly complex. The lore is more than satisfying and the world feels alive. Much more so than what you'd get nowadays with say ME, DA or the hiking murder simulators Bethesda makes. The characters are written as such and are not there to serve as fuck toys as has become custom, but actually add to the storyline. The sidequests though are strewn out across the levels and it's really easy to miss out on a lot of them. So you will almost surely need a guide if you plan to do a 100% or to merely explore what the game has to offer thoroughly.
It's one of those games that after completion you'll be left wondering how the fuck did you not hear about it sooner.
The answer is simple - the hype machine and the marketing apparatus have drowned out everything worth your while. The industry as it functions atm doesn't want you to remember anything older than 6 months if it doesn't stand to somehow profit from it.

I passed on that one because the cover art and screenshots I saw looked so generic. Big boobed warrior chick in a generic fantasy setting. I didn't even touch SaGa Frontier.

Yes sparking is awesome. It is an awesome feeling to gain a new and powerful skill during a boss fight, especially when it is a final blow. You aren't even acknowledging tha other factors affect leaning skills like the skill you are currently using and your characters power versus the monsters. They are games that reward you for challenging your party and progressing.

I agree, SaGa Frontier 2 is easily one of the weakest in the series with so much forced story you have to wade through instead of letting you play the game, very few options for party customization, and how rail roaded progression was.

After all, the goddess she incarnates (Maia the titular character) is the goddess of all creation (of pan-cosmic virility). Her beauty is to be expected.

Don't get me wrong, I like fanservice and chainmail bikinis, but seeing that with the "Summoner" logo was really jarring because everything in that game is really pseudo-historical. Interesting to hear that it was a good game, though.

As for the original, its a great example of why PS2 will never really be retro to me. Everything about it would be improved if it were on modern hardware. All the limitations are shit like terrible camera, wonky controls, wonky AI, and draw distance. Nostalgic game for me, but not one on my replay list. Very, very unique though. It's a bit more of an adventure/RPG hybrid than a pure RPG but I would recommend pic related, if you got inspired by the Hobbit.

The game mechanics arent' the best, but it is the single best adaptation of Tolkien's world I have ever seen in my life. The stuff they make up (and they do make up quite a lot) fits, in the writing style, putting names in the Tolkien constructed langauges, keeping the "race" relations alive, that you dig for athelas near old Numenorean ruins, everything.

I think you can find it on abandonware sites, and you'll probably need to dosbox it to play.
