I've only played the Genesis version, but Darksyne is pretty cool. It was smart to stick it up at the top of the menu.

This. Streemerz is the best game on the cartridge, not that that's much of a feat.

Anyone played that remake/reimagining of Streemerz?

I played the NES version, like the one you posted.

Strange, this seems to actually out-do the original flash game in popularity. Possibly a first for a homebrew game. What's amazing is how rather professionally made this NES game is! I suppose there's still hope for homebrew games? All we need is Super Bat Puncher, and we'll have it made.

>All we need is Super Bat Puncher, and we'll have it made.
Absolutely!
If that game is ever finished, it will be one of my favorite NES games ever made, commercial release, ROMhack, or otherwise. I'm that impressed with that demo of the game.

SBP's demo rivals professionally made games from the best years of the NES. I dare say it gives SMB3 a run for it's money! What's strange, the programmer ever refers to the demo as using "an old, crappy engine", and he's reworking the entire engine. It'd be a shame if this is discontinued for the NES and instead moved to a different platform, or worse, it stays NES exclusive but is buried under obscurity.

Would Nintendo allow him to release a version of his game on either the eShop or Virtual console, on the grounds that, for example, it stays exclusive on Nintendo consoles? I'd hate to make a game as a tribute to one of my favorite game consoles, only for Nintendo to tell me to go fuck myself and C&D me. I think that's what happened to the earlier builds of Retro City Rampage, formerly known as Grand Theftendo.

>> No.1306558

This thread reminds me.

I never tried the Genesis version of this.

Nintendo can't stop anyone from making homebrew NES games to my knowledge, and even if they could, they wouldn't.
Nintendo rarely even messes with fangames. Even something like AM2R, a remake of a game Nintendo is currently selling on the 3DS eshop, is still being made, and that's a pretty high-profile project, there's no way Nintendo isn't aware of it.

I'm pretty sure development of Retro City Rampage was moved from NES to PC just to get away from the technical limitations of the platform, in particular the 8 sprites per line limit, if I recall correctly.

The Genesis version is actually somewhat competent.
Still nowhere near worth the $200, but better.

Of course that's only because it steals a shit ton from other games because why the hell not.

Illuminator is pretty innovative and challenging with the dark gimmick.

Megalonia is probably one of the better titles of the collection. Your kill count on the drones determines the boss' health meter.

Streemerz is another playable title.

Underground is playable if you time the beginning shots properly.

Non-Human is one of my favorite title simply for those vampire heads.

Slashers also has some hidden depth to it as well.

Lollipops after level 1 gets unsettling. Anyone play level 3?

Evil Empire is also playable and also unlosable.

Billy Bob makes me wonder how much money they had in general. Some games today don't have that amount of detail in their spritework.

Bits and Pieces is a playable title. Very misleading with the description.

Beeps and Blips is very fun. Very hard near the end.

Manchester is a guilty pleasure.

Hambo's Adventures is playable if you time that jump properly. People don't do that at all.

Ninja Assault is another impressive title. Again, I question how much budget they had.

Cheetahmen lastly, has the most polish and that's saying something.

Overall, Action 52 is one of my favorite games unironically. It serves as what a game should never become. It's a piece of education. I was fucking crazy about the game for years. The Genesis version was somewhat more polished, but not as memorable. Plus Cheetahmen got downplayed a little.

Anyway, take a look at this. Active Enterprises planned a third game along with Sports 5 and an SNES version of Action 52. I wonder if the comic is still somewhere online.

Huh, I could've sworn that Nintendo asked him to remove all NES development related materials on his site in exchange for the rather basic NES version to be included in the Wii (and Steam) versions of his game.

Looking at his demo, flicker is really not that big of an issue since it rarely happens. What kills it is the slowdown, which he admits was due to his own program optimization. If anything would impose a problem for this game, it would've been the fact that he has WAY too many things onscreen, well above the NES' limit of 64 sprites. So if he modified the pedestrian and vehicle spawning system, he could make the game work as intended on the NES. That means it'd have to be cut down, and utilize many tricks such as forced flicker for bullets and making destroyed vehicles and people disappear.
