Is it worth playing the Phantasy Star games?

In what order?

Yeah, there's lots of references to past titles and all stories clash together in PS4 with some huge revelations.

The correct order would be
PS1 -> PS Gaiden -> PS2 Text Adventures -> PS2 -> PS3 -> PS4

But, honestly, I would only recommend 1, 2 and 4.

Pretty much this. Play 1, 2 and 4 then if you liked the series and want more play 3.

Yes, it is. I'd play 4 first. Its the only really 90s styled RPG of the bunch, and it'll get you into the series.

If you like 4, which you should if you like RPGs, then you can check out 2 and 1. They are dungeon crawlers, and require a different sort of mindset than 4. If you liked those, then you can check out 3. 3 isn't the worst game ever made, but it was made by the B team, since the usual Phantasy Star team was stolen to make Sonic the Hedgehog. Yes, really.

Only play 4. Others are only worth bothering from a historical perspective.

The original Phantasy Star is amazing and I can't believe how much less engaging II is. The first person dungeons, the open overworld, the battle backgrounds, the spell names, the full screen shops--even the scrolling got fucked over. What the fuck happened?

Ironically, Phantasy Star 3 is the only one I've ever played, because no stores around here carried the Master System (or Saturn, for that matter), and I'd never seen PS2 or PS4 in stores, either.

4 has a lot going for it. I got the genesis collection on psp and it includes Phantasy Star 2,3 and 4. I think I spent more time playing 4 than any other psp game.

Phantasy star generations (PS1 remake) was fan-translated for the PS2. It's awesome.

I just finished 1 tonight for the first time, it was a great retro JRPG experience. I had a lot of fun playing it, loved the music. I had to do some grinding to gather mesetas, apart from that there are of course a lot of random encounters as you walk through the dungeons.

Don't skip 1, I felt it was a rewarding experience.

>genesis collection on psp

It's funny because, for years, I had no idea PS4 existed because pic related. I thought "Collection" meant "all classic Phantasy Star games".

Phantasy Star 2 Was one of the earliest Megadrive games, whereas Phantasy Star developed well into the SMS's life, so they knew the hardware.

Phantasy Star used the entire 512k of the SMS 4 meg cart's memory...the little picture at the end of Alis and co used the very last drop of memory left.

They could not fit PS4 onto the GBA cartridge, most likely.

4 megabit
6 megabit
6 megabit
24 megabit

They were originally going to have 3d dungeons in PS4 using the Mega CD hardware but when it was moved to cartridge format they had to ditch that.

Is PSIV worth playing if you don't have any interest in playing the first three games? Does it work well as a standalone?

Maybe read a plot summary of 1 and 2 if you want to understand what they are referencing.
