Those shit games you played because you were a kid and there was nothing better to do and you didn't know any better...

I rented supes 64 for a weekend and made it pretty far. The ring levels actually get much easier as it progresses.

And that's kind of the point. With hindsight now all those bad games we played and put hours into because of young naivety and lack of anything else to do or play we look back and realise that they are in fact, bad games.

Fucking hell, OP! I can't remember ever being so disappointed in a game.

I adored Miracle World because I got an SMS2 for Christmas. And then I finally got around to renting this...

I distinctly remember putting the controller down after the part where he falls down the stairs and you get a game over.

Even my child self knew that a guy who punches octopuses in the head for a living shouldn't have to put up with this kind of shit.

I'm going to finally go play the original version, because shit might make more sense.

Stunt Race FX
Digimon World 2 and 3, and Rumble Arena

For some reason, I thought Mario Kart 64 was better than DKR as a kid, but I always thought of them (and still do) as good games. These days, I realize DKR clearly has more depth and variety and is generally a superior game in pretty much every way.

I thought both BattleTanx were perfect at the time, but playing them again I realize they're pretty flawed.

This came out before GTA was 3D, so it was a big deal to me at the time despite being a pretty bad game.

Quest 64

Donkey Kong 64. I mean, there were many good aspects of the game, but I think they just tried for too much... I beat it eventually, with less than 70% of the game finished.

Tekwar. While technically speaking a shit game, the level architecture was awesome enough that in the Christmas of 1995 the 12 year old me found it interesting enough to explore it for hours on end with cheat codes, until every nook and cranny was seen.

Karate Kid for the NES.
If you aren't aware of this game, youtube search "Karate Kid NES No Deaths". The game is 9 minutes long if you can master the shitty controls. Every level begins with a series of round fights, making it seem like a fighting game. THEN it's a side scrolling beatemup with minigames littered throughout the stages. The final level takes place on what appears to be Mars, or at the very least the middle of the desert which I'm sure did not happen in Karate Kid, and then you have to fight someone to save your girlfriend.
Karate Kid, everybody.

I think it's a little too cryptic. The game leaves you wondering what the hell you're actually doing and why you're doing it a lot of the time. You often don't know
>where you're going
>why you're going there
>if you're supposed to do anything before going to new zones
>what the bars even mean all of the time, I thought I had to fill up the bottom left bar by killing humans as a kid and that aliens were just bonus obstacles
>who you're even fighting against other than vaguely killing off things that appear randomly and shoot at you sometimes

I dunno, it's hard to explain, but the game had like no structure at all. It just threw a block of text at you in the intro then let you wander around in a largely barren and lifeless world with no clear objective and very minimal communication or "waypoints". That's how I felt anyway.

These days, with the internet and games like Terraria and Minecraft, that isn't so unusual because games have progressed to the point where the general things you should be working towards are heavily implied and you can always look things up if you get too confused. Back then, this game wasn't quite so refined and seemed like an experiment in game development rather than an actual video game.

So yeah, I'd say it wasn't so good. It was a great concept and I'm sure people loved it as just that: a concept. But as a standalone experience, it needed more direction.

Fun fact. DMA Design themselves didn't know what the fuck they were doing. Nintendo offered to help them, and while they were impressed with their technical know-how, Nintendo reps were becoming progressively more depressed with how aimless DMA was. Nintendo dropped support for the game because progress was incredibly slow. Despite that, DMA firmly believes that they simply took on a challenge that was way too big for them, and they even believe Nintendo was not at fault.
