OP's pic looks like my mom's browser window before I fixed it. It took me forever to finally get her to realise that Comcast was NOT AOL and she did not have to sign into her AOL email to use the internet.

Our first computer came from a children's education network. They refurbished old computers and sold them to lower income families at a highly discounted price. This was about September 2000. The computer we got was an office computer that was later used as a home computer. Well whoever cleaned out the files didn't do a good job. There was a porn dialer left on there. A picture popped up with a woman in see through underwear, log in info and price options for a subscription. Luckily no one in my house was a little kid. I thought it was hilarious but other families might not have been so amused.

My mom did call the place she got the computer from and unfortunately a lady who worked there donated the computer and her son had been using it. That must have been pretty embarrassing. They gave us instructions on how to delete it.

I'm not sure how those services worked. I think they connected you to a chat room where what was most likely a greasy fat guy in his mom's basement pretending to be a hot chick, would have e-sex with you. And maybe you could download crappy low-res pics. Very slowly. Because this was dialup in the year 2000.

Discovering emulation was almost a magical moment for me back in 1998. Playing every SNES game I like was awesome, but the real kicker was the Neo Geo emulation. A console I always adored but never got because of its horrendous game prices. I almost pissed my pants out of sheer delight. I didn't sleep for 2 days straight because I was so absorbed in playing KoF96 and Metal Slug (on a keyboard).

The NeoRAGEx gui still gives me massive nostalgia.

Ah. I see. Then that guy got ripped off then.

I never played many games on it. It was rather old and had a few issues but worked fine for internet and school purposes. I remember playing solitaire on it. There was a card set with Dracula's castle and the little bat would flap its wings. I called it Castlevania solitaire. I tried Mine Sweeper but I was terrible at it. It felt like one player Battleship and I just couldn't get the hang of it. I know some people are wild about Mine Sweeper but I just can't get into it. I didn't play any ROMs on that computer. I still had most of my old systems then.

My next computer was a floor model Compaq Presario from Sears. They were shutting down their electronics department and only selling appliances upstairs. So everything was on sale. It was the only way we could afford to get a new computer. It came with a really good Office Jet printer/scanner/copier combo that I wish I still had. It never failed me once. Meanwhile my latest one died just out of warranty.

That's the computer I got into emulation with. I also played Maple Story in beta phase. My God the hackers. But it was fun back then. I still go back from time to time to play as a later character I made and check things out. But I liked the game better when it was simpler. It went from way too grindy to EXP everywhere for doing practically nothing. And the community is terrible. The reason I started playing Maple was because a friend was playing the beta and it was one of the few games that would run nicely on that computer.

Beta days are halcyon days.

I've thought about using reddit a few times, but the discussion style seems weird to me.
From the few times I've visited, it seems more like posting an article or a link to the main subreddit, then people comment on what you posted, and people can comment on the comments. I prefer things streamed 4chan style when it comes to replying.

That's probably worded strangely, but it bothers me.

I remember hanging out in the "Sailor Moon" chatroom a lot because FOR WHATEVER REASON, it was the place to be.

A lot of people would argue about which "AOL profile" was "the true Sailor Moon/Ranma/whatever popular anime character" and that was your AOL street cred yo.
I'd even go to "Red Dragon Inn" and people would be;
::sits in rafters and watches everyone drink::

Anyone on /vr/ who was interested in making games back in the day?
Pic related, RPG Toolkit.

My uncle introduced my cousins and I to it back when we were just kids.
I spent so many years, even while I was in middle and high school, at my computer making small little RPG games and posting them in the RPG toolkit game section/forums. So many comfy memories.

No, but I lived vicariously through an original character that had a very distinctive first and last name, and I put that on every single thing. I fell out of doing that by the time I was 16 in 2004, but I kept using that email address for everything up until I was fucking 23.

As best as I could, I wiped Google clean of all my old websites, submissions to other websites (usually awful fanfics), changed my email and removed all known connections to my current alias (which I've been using for a couple of years) to the old one. There's still stuff lingering around, but I've completely disconnected all of my current contact info and online aliases from it.

As far as I know of, anyways.

I was doxxing myself the other day to check my digital footprint, and found out that apparently a forum user I barely used to know online killed himself. The forum was from an online game (not surprisingly). The guild I used to belong to used to mess with him... a lot (like erasing his online characters after guessing his password, telling everyone he hacked, etc.). Didn't take any part of it, but it made feel really awful when I found that out in the forum archives. I don't think you are jaded.

I steadily started losing interest in the internet as the real world crept up online. I don't feel at home here as I did years ago. I just see it as the second iteration of the television in its current state.

What happens to someone like me when they loses their home? I lived there my entire life, I don't know anything else.

Season's Greetings.

God damn I played this way, way too much when I was in fifth grade.

Sometimes our teacher, if we were doing well, would let us stay in during recess and play games on the computer (pre-approved, of course), like Oregon/Yukon Trail and Snowball Fight.

I was always on the Elder Scrolls forums when I was a teenager (I still go, but not NEARLY as often. I've got something around 20,000 posts or so on there). Anybody remember the Elder Scrolls Tan forum background? I miss that old look. I hadn't been on there long enough to remember the old orange look.

I was in junior high school until 2004, I remember very clearly in our keyboarding class my friend Adam and I would get done early and play the flash bowling game on Candystand.com.

At the time, they just came out with the creamy hard-candy lifesavers, Creamsavers. The bowling balls there were the raspberry, strawberry, orange, and chocolate. He would always choose the chocolate ball.

The game would let you choose a 3-character nickname, and he always chose POO.

Therefor we called the game Poo Bowling, due to chocolate bowling ball and of course POO being his name.

Fucking awesome times.

I think it stems from this cultural delusion that anyone can be an internet celebrity. That also stems from the idea that anyone can be a millionaire. Clearly they cannot. I don't think John Steinbeck is a fantastic author or anything, but he has this quote: “[Americans] see themselves....as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.” and I think that rings true today. Americans see themselves as temporarily undiscovered celebrities.

2006 was the year that started it all with Time Magazine publishing a ton of articles about Facebook and Youtube. They even made Time's person of the year "you" IIRC. What a load of crock.

I live in a rural town so the idea of facebook makes me so frustrated because I have avoided falling into the trap of smelling someone's farts before they do. Apparently, from his DeviantArt description.

>So, when I was about 7 years old, I was exposed to a video game called Super Mario Bros. 3. I played it almost religiously and found myself collecting a lot of Mario toys. There was a time that I would go through the TV Guides and magazines around the house and started drawing raccoon ears, tails, and leaves all over the photos of the people inside. Boy, deeprooted interests and influences come from the weirdest places, huh?

>Super Mario 3 is probably my favorite game ever, since it pretty much sparked my influence in art. [...] Plus I thought the raccoon thing was pretty cool. As a result, I've specialized in this form of art where you draw an animal with human-like qualities, or "Anthropomorphism", if you will. It's a pretty traditional style of Anthro, unlike this "modern" form that's been floating around, which seem to look a lot more human than animal.

I totally feel ya. I read all of it and you reminded me of certain things that I thought where long forgotten.

I skipped one and half generations of gaming consoles because my family was having problems with money at that time.

I spent most of my middle school/high school days playing with an old playstation console with a disc that had tons of NES roms saved in it.

>I remember those lazy afternoons playing Kirby's Adventure.
>Trying to figure out what the fuck to do in all those fun japanese games.
>Playing all those crazy mods of famous games (Super Mario Bros 2 - Christmas edition, SMB with Zelda characters, SMB - everysinglelevelhasunderwatermechanics edition, etc).
>Playing co-op games like Contra, Chip 'n Dale and TMNT with friends and having a blast.

I remember playing that very same disc all day long after we moved out of my hometown, I had no friends and nothing better to do.

Over time, my family became more stable and we could afford a new console along with some games, and since then everything changed.

Damn... that disc was so precious to me, but I had totally forgotten about it until now.

I am feeling anon.
I am feeling good things.

Thanks for sharing your story as well, anon. I feel you.

>I remember playing that very same disc all day long after we moved out of my hometown, I had no friends and nothing better to do.

This hit me so hard. I suppose I was born to be a social outcast because even back in my homecountry I didn't really do anything else than play countless hours on my PC. My parents were ok with it as they thought it would get me into technology from a young age.

Fuck, I'm starting to ramble on, sorry. Anyway I treasured that PC and those games like you treasured your CD and PS.

That's just pedantic, the whole thing against people using "literally" too often is. People can and have used "literally" for exaggeration for ages now. I remember I had a geocities site called "Majin Vegeta's DBZ RPG" one of probably thousands of sites with that exact same name and concept. I made this picture just now as a kind of mock-up but it's the level of quality we're talking about.

At one point we had like a dozen or so members half of whom were inactive or "grounded from the computer" at any given time and it was like a full time job running the place keeping track of power levels, where the dragonballs were, coming up with super original storylines like "Frieza is back from the dead again" and "battling" in AIM.

I remember that me and a friend I knew in real life started it because we were already members of an existing rpg but all the good characters were taken and we wanted to be Vegeta and Gohan like Henry VIII breaking with Rome. Of course I went mad with power as 12 year olds are prone to do.

I think I tried to resurrect it as recently as 2005 but by then I had discovered beer and girls so I just couldn't get as excited by it.

And the moment when he came back to life

>> No.1318995

Newgrounds is still very much alive and well. Frank's Adventure now has 4 installments (maybe 5; can't remember.

Speaking of which, I'm trying to find a flash. It's about teleporting monsters or aliens...can't remember it's name. It's about a guy in his kitchen listening to a radio report about those creatures causing trouble for police and military...something about an invasion. Anyway, it concludes with a jump-scare ending where one of the creatures busts through the guy's window and chomps him while he's minding his own business. Anyone remember this flash? I'm trying to find it but there's so much shit on Newgrounds now that it's hard to locate.

Ah, old yahoo stuff... I'm part of the reason they couldn't have nice things. I had a PSX ISO site up on geocities, mirrored across 30 accounts. I used yahoo briefcase to store all of the games. The only problem with yahoo briefcase is they only allowed 30mb to be stored per account. These awesome german dudes came up with a program (BCUP) that would automatically create yahoo accounts, upload your files to briefcase, then create a small file containing encrypted account data for said accounts. You'd download the tiny file then use their other program (BCDOWN) to download whatever was in the briefcases. By the end of it I had well over several hundred thousand yahoo accounts and got IP banned several times.

There was another briefcase download program called yahoosauger, but it didn't get too much attention.

Level sets were pretty godlike, shame they didn't have the original episode titles or credits, or they would have been a must-buy for me. When the Levels were announced I actually considered selling my Dragon Boxes because I was blown away.

Even though the timing of the release was REALLY bad (like a month after DBox 7 came out?), I don't think it was lack of sales that made them cancel it, I think it was because their film restoration process was too much for them to afford.

Now we have the Orange Bricks in 1080p coming out. Lucky us.

I can't even remember my first computer. I have vague memories of being like one and my brothers had like 3 apple 2s set up in a row while playing Olympics games and some roguelike. First time I connected to the Internet was 1996 or 1997. I used to browse AOL kids and they had an awesome ftp style section filled with games and demos for shit like Duke nukem and rise of the triad. Other than that I used to just go to pokemon.com and once sent out an email to "everyone" asking them to send me emails.

Oh and when I was 11 I used to go into lesion chat rooms and exchange lesion pictures through email with other "lesbians" although I'm pretty sure they were just honey teen dudes too. Tried to do it again a couple of years later and they said I should be ashamed of myself for acting so slutty. Those were probably actual lesbians.

Oh and I used to do a anime re in a chat room and got banned when I called some dude named king Bob a faggot for shutting up the rp. In retrospect that man probably laughed his sides to heaven.

I don't recall. They work to this day, but only barely. Still, anyone who's not a retard can make websites for the Saturn and DC. Just use HTML 1.0, and use static GIFs, probably 89a.

I need to get a netlink, I guess.
