All systems need airflow to some degree so they don't overheat. They just don't need exhaust fans. If you trapped it in a box with no airflow it would overheat. Ambient airflow is enough to keep their temperatures relatively regulated. Open front/sides and gaps on tops are generally sufficient for hotter air to move away. Though it's often beneficial to have bottom gaps for cooling as well. Simply giving it something on the order of an inch gap on the top and bottom to open air will generally be more than enough.
