Here's my obligatory post every time I see one of these threads...

I have a Hexen server that's been around for a while. It comes up from 10pm-10am (pacific time) every day. If anyone would like to play than please feel free.

I used to have regulars from a nightly thread on /v/ about a year ago, but that time has passed. I would love to see some activity again the game is great fun.

I liked the music and ambience of it too. Hexen had lots of nice touches, not to mention the almighty ACS going on. Like how Korax maliciously taunts you at the opening of each new hub, just even from the player's perspective there were lots of cool little ideas evident in the game. I was so frustrated that the map layout and some of the pacing always prevented me from liking Hexen.

I just thought of searching for these, nice to see somebody uploaded them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9LAYRHjI9k

Also they should've kept the Heresiarch as Korax. Turning Korax into a many-limbed dragon-insect pixel beast really messed around the sense of continuity in the whole Serpent Riders concept for me. Gameplay-wise I ultimately liked Heretic more, but Hexen had greater potential imo.

THE BIG DEBATE!

Now I will say this right now:
I still have my old Compaq 486 33mhz (with Hexen still barely working) and the song in that first link seems to have an extra track that I can't hear for the life of me when I try to play it.
It's a (probably) severely worn-out Sound Blaster 1 card, and I'm afraid to open up the comp to see if there's anything I should change.
So...
Play Hexen on PC with "half" the music, or play Hexen 64 on console with "all" music?

Are you saying that your current PC is the old one? I couldn't imagine playing Hexen without all the music, so N64 I guess. I also find the n64 soundtrack to completely blow the PC's out of the water for all but a few tracks.

Well not really, the PC that I replay Hexen (as well as a whole bunch of other games) on is an old Compaq Presario (I think the name is, it's got Windows 3.11 and Norton Commander for DOS), but I only use it for old games nowadays.

The thing is, PC Hexen for me (on that computer) lacks that "eeeeEEEE EEEEEOOooooEEEE-EEEE" higher-pitched humming part that kinda-sorta sounds like a dragging violin. So my nostalgia value for Hexen doesn't quite match up with what other people have, since I never really heard the whole thing (apparently).

He is the best class by so far that it makes the game less fun. His flechettes... were just a bad idea.
Cleric > Fighter > Mage in usefullness/easiness
Fighter > Cleric > Mage in terms of fun.

As amazing as the Arc of Death is, her Frost Shards and Crystal Wand are just painful to use.

>> No.1285130

>>1285113
I'd say the classes are fairly well balanced among each other. The cleric has, without a doubt, the worst starting weapon and his 2nd and 3rd weapons are weaker than the fighter/mage's. On the flip side he's got the strongest final weapon. His flechettes are very good, much better than the others'.

The fighter is always strong and is the least reliant on mana, all while having the lowest mana costs. The only time I truly had a hard time with him was against wendigos without the hammer.

The mage requires the most effort to get the most of what he can do. The wand is weak, yes, but good and efficient as fuck. Frost Shards are ass unless you're in melee, and if you are it hits as hard as Timon's Axe. Arc is easily the strongest 3rd weapon and Bloodscourge can potentially do as much damage as Wraithverge.

Frost Shards requires so much effort compared to the Mage's other weapons it just isn't worth it. For a high mana cost, needing to be in melee, projectiles that can be reflected, piss-poor damage at ranged, and a very slow rate of fire, they're simply outmatched. In deathmatch however, Frost Shards is killer.

I love Firestorm as well but it has its drawbacks: it chews through green mana like no tomorrow, has a maximum range, and is pretty random in its damage. It can take anywhere from 1-4 shots to kill a single centaur; that and the little aoe flames that spawn from a direct hit, while strong, rarely ever get used.

That's my reasoning for those, at least.

I really like the stun effect that the Frost shards have, you can more or less pain chance every enemy in close quarters.

Firestorm is also pretty good for crowds of low tier enemies because you can just stun lock them and switch to the Serpent Staff to finish them off.

With that said though, they're way more effective in multiplayer.

I don't understand it either. Supposedly it's based on a wall you can find with three tile patterns, but which one it uses is random. But in the SDA speedrun he pushes the first three tiles left-to-right, so who knows. Maybe the map script exists somewhere?

Also one heinous bug in Hexen is in Gibbet where a script checks for a certain number of enemies remaining before letting you advance. The problem is if you kill multiple enemies at once you can end up never triggering it, and thus get stuck.

It's just bugfixes and silly things I forgot. If you want me to discuss, well, it was more hassle than it should have been to make that mod because Thetis is a mediocre coder. He fucking put all his DECORATE definitions in complete random order, and there's an incredible shitheap of deprecated code in there; I was confused more than once trying to figure out something that no longer actually did anything. He comments almost none of his code, also. Luckily, it's DECORATE and ACS, so it's hard to make that unreadable.
There's a video in that thread too, although I managed to completely botch the processing somehow, so there's stutters. Definitely just going to use FRAPS next time.
I also ended up finishing some stuff that seemingly wasn't fully implemented in HeXercise; interestingly, Lloyd sets the REFLECTION flag when you use the shield/gauntlet/Wand secondary, but not INVULNERABLE/NODAMAGE, so you still get hurt even when the projectile reflects off you. Also, the Axe & Hammer pieces weren't put in there completely properly.
One thing that set my Autism Alarm (tm) completely blaring was that Thetis, instead of using his own heal script that he wrote to heal the damage you steal with the Serpent Staff, just gives the player Crystal Vials. I mean, seriously, what the fuck? You have a heal script that does exactly what you need for this, yet you resort to this garbage. All I had to do was make another script (so that the damage value can be carried over to the heal value) and reference his heal script.

The reason Frost Shards are really good in DM but shit in single player is because the health difference between the player(s) and the enemies. That and the spread makes for easy hits, unlike the Arc of Death. The player health is so low that even Frost Shards become deadly.

I don't understand why Hexen II is called Hexen II. I mean you have the Serpent Riders and the first story is called Heretic. The second is Hexen. Now by the time of Heretic II, the Serpent Riders are gone, and now we're focusing on the hero of Heretic embarking on a new adventure so that makes sense. But in Hexen II, you're not on Cronos, nor do any of the heroes from Hexen have a role in the story.

So why did they call it Hexen II? Why not some other name with an H that sounds neat, like Heresy or something?

Actually Heretic 2 takes place before Hexen. The events of that game take place right after the Heretic expansion, Shadow of the Serpent Riders, where Corvus was cursed by D'Sparil to wander the broken worlds that the Serpent Riders had taken over prior to Heretic. At the end of that he enters a portal which leads him back to Silverspring in Parthoris (Corvus' home and ep.1 in Heretic), starting the story of Heretic 2.

After playing the HeXen mod called WoC+HeXercise i found 3 flaws
1)The potion variety, why would you need different sizes of the quartz flasks and crystal vials? its kinda pointless, same applies for the flechettes, with any class you can use the Repulsion+green flechette,it could be cool for each class to have 2 different flechettes
2)Alchemy is pointless
3)This mod makes HeXen to be easy unless you play it in UV[Fire Ettins can make ruin your moment though, these fuckers are tough specially if they spawn in a narrow area like in Guardian of Ice trap]

But outside of these 3 flaws, the mod is amazing but its a shame there are few people that are interested in mapping for HeXen

>getting the fire key from Guardian of Ice

You also find a complete set in the secret level of hub 4. However you're not forced to pick any of them up, so you can miss them if you're so inclined. This is unlike Heretic II where most weapon/spells are placed in a way that you have to get them.

>> No.1366927

Yes, the Ethereal Crossbow aka the shotgun of the game, it's going to be your most used weapon until you get the Hellstaff,

Heresiarch's Seminary had the most "Now which button have I missed this time?" moments for me.
Also, Slaughtaurs.

I thought that Necropolis was totally cool, just a shame it was so small

i dont want to sound like DSP but,how the hell i was supposed to know that walking to the underground river in the Shadow Wood opened a gate to get to a tower that has the switch to open darkmere?
At least i didnt checked the internet for a guide, and the game after Shadow Wood became great, shame that it lacks a bigger monster variety

>> No.1372087

>>1372070
The enemy variety is there but the problem is they underutilized some enemies, namely the wendigo and reivers. Also Hexen's bosses don't make for good mini versions of themselves unlike most fps' of the time.

How? Don't they put it like, right in the middle of a hallway?

>> No.1372179

>>1372087
to be honest, there are sections where you get enough monsters and its alright, the problem i have is that it doesnt have a slightly bigger variety, like having Bishops riding Chaos Serpents as sub-boss tier enemies
i sound a bit etilist but it would be cool for HeXen.wads to make new enemies along with new maps and/or mix some new enemies in the Vanilla[Elemental Ettins/Afrits on the 7 portals,Shadow Wood has some low tier enemies from Heretic,Heresiarch's Seminary has Bishops riding Chaos serpents and some Bishops have different attacks,Maulotaurs in Castle of Grief,3Spooky4u Necropolis[the skeletons from Heretic+the wraiths+revenants without missiles, instead they punch harder than Doom]

The room with the axe key? It opens after entering a specific area. Or if you mean the room the axe key unlocks, yeah there's a stupid bug with it if you kill the enemies too quickly.

according to doom wikia, you have to leave 3 Serpents on the lower area to trigger the gate

I kinda agree, it needed more mini boss monsters, or at least something resilient like the Barons in DOOM for example.

That said, they would have brought back a variation of Maulotaurs.

I like to think that D'Sparil has an affinity for water, whereas the Serpent Riders in general have an affinity for lightning (D'Sparil's main attack, Korax calls down lightning when he actives traps, Eidolon shoots homing lightning balls and made the Tempest's Staff for the Demoness).

D'Sparil for water, Eidolon for fire, and Korax for I have no idea, since his attacks consist of mimicking his minions'.
