It completely ruins the music. Also I hear that the controls are a bit weaker, since you can't use hold anymore.

Oh well. Still have the SNES original. You are playing the translated JP version right? The Western release made dumb changes for no reason.

I have the PS2 version as it was released in europe.

It's more difficult than the original version, too many projectiles and there's no slow-down. It's nearly impossible to not get hit.

This is my favorite game on the SNES. I love the incredible set pieces, attention to detail, and quality story they somehow managed to pack into a run and gun. Too bad they fucked up so bad on the localization, because this is a real gem.

I know exactly what they were thinking:

>too much reading
>too Japanese

Which, should have been part of the selling point. Assault Suits Valken is the PERFECT game to aim at teenagers. Sega America knew well they should aim at the teen audience, and had an ad campaign for it.

Imagine if they had an ad campaign for ASV, that focused that it was a gritty mature mecha storyline? Just a few years later the anime boom hit the USA and teenagers loved serious adult mecha anime. I guess this might be a History is 20/20 thing since it seems so obvious to me. But a suit in 1990 might be scared.

I also HATE it when they change a game that already has an English title to another one. ASV is perfectly fine.

The controls are so good in the SNES version. This combined with the way your mech handles and the sense of weight it carries, damn.

Never managed a no death run, at least not yet. Because of the way your health carries over between levels I always end up losing a life in the auto scrolling tunnel level after getting my health worn down by the city level.

I'm going to have to force myself to play through it one of these days, the difficulty and other changes really do make it a miserable experience. Not even like there is a youtube vid of the full game, just people playing the opening section and then dying on level 1 to the boosted difficulty.

Only thing that's a tad akward is the firing and lock on, but they're doing the best they could with the snes controller.

I was thinking of a dual analog controller. Left is standard movement, but right is firing directions. The L1,2 and R1,2 are dash, and shield.

I played through the Aeon Genesis release, great game. The controls worked surprisingly well, the setting and story were quite decent for an SNES game, and the action was varied and interesting.
