Would anyone here be interested in buying the actual hardware of PC-88, 98, FMTOWNS and other such?

I live in Tokyo and there are several shops in Akihabara specializing in this shit, as well as Yahoo Auctions. I could, in theory, buy hardware and/or software and ship it to people elsewhere.

Kinda want to gauge interest before I start seriously looking into this, though.

PC-88 emulation isn't as documented as PC-98 http://illusioncity.net/nec-pc-88-series-emulators-tools-lists/ is the main site I know.
If a game gives you errors, looks weird or simply won't load, try a different mode. Most games use V2 but some older ones require V1.
The d88 format can contain multiple disk images so be careful which one you put in each drive.
Switch between 4 and 8 MHz if you feel a game is running too fast or too slow.
The emulators don't have a function to create blank disk images, use d88 manager for that.
Most games use the numeric keypad, space, enter and escape as input. Z, X and C may also get used.
Some support a mouse.

Sure it does. Working within limitations helps teach technique and adaptability.

Think of it this way. No, I meant the lip animation that doesnt work on the PC-98 version if you are using an emulator. Actually, the main problem with the PC-98 version of Policenauts is that it doesnt have subtitles. Most of the important dialogue is spoken like in the PC-Engine CD and Sega CD version of Snatcher, that probably needs some advanced hacking skills... and I wonder if it would be possible without breaking something else in the way. You can play the game with subtitles if you want, but that mode is text only, there are no voices and no lip animations, also you need to complete the game to get that option.

I've been looking around but I haven't found anything yet since I don't know Japanese.

One thing you can do though, is tracking three mono channels of 4-op FM synthesis in one tracker (e.g. DefleMask) and three channels of YM2149F SSG in another (e.g. Vortex Tracker II). Combine everything in another program and you've faked the YM2203 chip.

YM2608 is the same, but add three more channels of FM (all six channels in stereo) and one channel of mono ADPCM samples. This chip also used six channels of percussion sounds, which you can download from http://snesmusic.org/hoot/drum_samples.zip.. Now you can fake the YM2608 chip all night long!

But still... I would love to have a real OPN/OPNA tracker...

You'd write themusic out in MML in pretty much any text editor, compile it with FMP7 and play it back using the player posted earlier or with the player available on the FMP website (FMPMD2000), I don't know if there are any hardware players for the PC-9801.

I don't know how to write in MML but the concept between platforms is mostly the same: Type it out, compile for system, play back resultant file.

2 computer lines made by NEC in the early 80's (81 and 82, something like that). The PC-88 family is based on a Z-80 clone made by NEC, while the PC-98 is based on a custom 80186 model that is pin-compatible with the 8088. The PC-98 family isn't really an IBM compatible even if it is able to run some of it's softwares, because it has some hardware that no other PC clones have, like a custom video chip that isn't VGA, EGA nor CGA, stuff like this.

It's called dithering, bro. It's the most basic tech trick in the book for older games. Just take any image and put it into .gif form in mspaint and voila! Instant dithering.

On a 15KHz monitor I meant, like the ones the Amiga and MSX uses.(you'll ask me what I'm doing on this thread. Well, the discussion heavily focus on how to make a good use dithering, so even if I'm using another platform than the PC-98 and PC-88 lines of computers, I'm only slightly off topic)
I post photos instead of screencaps to see how it render when you look at the original computer's monitor.

It looks great. The problem is you're introducing the problems associated with using a camera to photograph a screen, which reduces the fidelity and means it doesn't look like what it'd look like in person. Hate to say, but it looks a little worse. Remember that dithering also has an effect on perceived texture, so be very sparing with it on smooth surfaces likes skin, and use the simpler patterns if you do. Your girl looks a little like an orange, dimpled all over.
For example, look at this picture. The bushes, ground, clouds and crumpled fabric of the suits are all heavily dithered, but the skin is smooth blocks of colour, with occasional small transitions of half one colour, half the other in a simple pattern on the, ahem, larger expanses of skin. You have transitions that go in three stages and take up a large space, try to be more subtle. Your darkest colour is also a tad orange, it clashes slightly.

The other problem is that the hair is smooth compared to the skin, though obviously that's because you haven't worked on it yet, but it does need to be "busier" than the skin, though that's more in terms of actual representation of texture rather than dithering, so you need to leave a little headroom to work with.

But it's a good start, just needs a little more subtlety.

Best version of Ys

>> No.1311058

Some of you more enterprising neckbeards should slap together a rudimentary PC-88/PC-98 recommendation .jpg.

A lot of these games look great, but it's rough trying to slog through them and find out which ones have English translations, much less which ones are decent to begin with.

There are a few fan translations for PC88 and PC98 on Romhacking
http://www.romhacking.net/?page=translations&genre=&platform=3&status=&languageid=12&perpage=20&title=&author=&transsearch=Go
The more difficult part is discerning which games have little to no Japanese text.
Then you have to consider games that were initially made on those platforms, ported to another platform and translated there. Some of those ports are pretty close, others stray far from the source.

For the PC88 you may as well consider starting up a whole database because the whole library has practically no documentation in English and shit like modes, clock speeds and possible emulator issues.

I'm pretty sure that its just the PC-88 version of the game running on 98 hardware. You'd probably like it though, its more playable than the Sega CD version, imo. It doesn't rely on what is basically save state scumming the way that version does, because the difficulty isn't so insanely scaled. It also has similar combat to the early Ys games, you just walk into the enemies to hit them.

There were games made on the 98 and then ported to the 88 just like you had games from the X1 and FM7 because the 88 was typically a platform you didn't want to miss but it's true most games from the 80s started on the 88.
Daisenryaku for instance was originally a PC98 game and followed by Daisenryaku 88, FM and X1.

All 4 versions (FM-7, PC88, X1, PC98) I have fit on a single floppy image. I can't get sound in the PC98 version for some reason.

The FM-77AV is an interesting machine nonetheless. 4096 colors is quite a feat for a 8 bit machine even when they did great with just 8.

>> No.1314318

>>1314280

Isn't it a bit too much for an 8-bit machine?
I mean, with 4096 colors, you need 12-bit in chunky mode to define the color of 1 pixel, thus requiring more than 1 memory operation to define a single pixel. At a 640*200 resolution, making one picture would be slow as fuck with so much colors on an 8-bit machine.

If it's 640x400 and has more than 8 colors it's rather likely it's PC98. Larger images used panning.
The 8 bit computers technically had lines doubles which can usually be noticed upon magnification.
Windows eroge use 640x480 or 800x600. They only recently upgraded to higher resolutions.
FM Towns also used 640x480 but doesn't have many eroge specifically made for it.
X68000 used odd resolutions like 512x512.

OH GOSH somebody please help me.

I've been trying to emulate this obscure game, Pink Shock Pirates 2, I think, for an extremely long time, failing every time just because I can't fucking find the ROMs.

So a miracle happens and I find it, finally. I try Anex, can't fucking read the FDD files. I try converting them to FDI, VFIC says it can't convert them so I decide to use NEKO instead and convert the files to D88, which it can read.

And then this error happens and I realize I can't fucking read Japanese.

Help.

>> No.1321397

Can't read Japanese, but it looks like a problem with the BIOS ROM. Look up what you need to do to load one for NEKO and maybe try a couple different ones to see what happens while you wait for someone who can read moon.

Upon closer inspection it seems to depend on the clock speed. Kanji mode apparently requires more than 8 MHz. Too fast isn't good for the game either since you no longer see whether you moved or not.

The same guy who did the Tifa-Tan games. It isn't very good and I'd reccoment playing this instead:

A game heavily based on Wonder Momo with fantastic, retro gameplay and lots of cheesecake. If you are into girls running around the streets naked, some cute, mostly non-violent Ryona, beat-em-ups and lots of unlockables as the game goes on, this is for you.

Read this if you are stuck AKA read it when you reach a room full of pillars:
