This is the final ending screen of Super Mario Land 2. Look at Wario on this screen. Just look at him. Look how much more prominent he is than Mario. And look at that smile.

Mario got his castle back and all, but Wario doesn't give a shit. Because Wario knows. The next game is going to be his game. And the game after that. And after that. In fact this is the last real new game Mario will ever have on any Game Boy system. Because of Wario.

You can see it on Wario's expression that he knows this. Oh yes he does. Fuck yeah Wario.

I can't believe Wario is actually a creation of Nintendo. He looks like a parody that someone like MAD Magazine would make, satirizing Nintendo's overpowering presence in the market and bullying numerous companies around.

That and the fact he appears so prominently within the franchise with his own game series (or rather two, since Wario Ware is definitely a separate series to his platform games), which is especially strange for a company that has a bad habit of rehashing the same stuff over and over or keeping things somewhat conventional.

Everything about Wario is bizarre. The fact he's not just a straight "badass evil clone" character such as Shadow the Hedgehog who Sega unsuccessfully tried to force a franchise with, the fact Nintendo decided to make the sequel to Mario Land 2 all about him despite being the antagonist and only truly appearing at the very end of the game (imagine if Nintendo made "Bowser World" or something after making SMB3), his continued popularity to this day... It really was a stroke of complete genius that somehow all came together.

I do think that the Land 2 commercial had something to do with his sudden popularity though. Even I remember seeing it, despite rarely seeing any other video game ads on TV.

Maybe when they started adding him to the Mario Kart games and later "party" games they thought him being a giant would have been a bit strange, so they shrunk him down to a size more proportionate to the other plumbers. That and they maybe thought he worked better as a protagonist when he was a bit smaller.

>>1281105
I've been playing back the old Wario games again recently and the first Wario Land holds up surprisingly well. I kind of miss the hat gimmick since it was replaced with the different Wario "forms" in later games and the physics feel so different compared to regular Mario games and the later Wario ones. They're more Mega Man-like I suppose, since Wario doesn't have a lot of momentum and he stops on a dime.

I'm playing Wario Land 2 now and it's also a very nicely designed game, but coming straight out of the first Wario Land the physics take a bit of getting used to since he now has more momentum and feels heavier than before. Also the memory matching game for getting treasure is pretty annoying and I definitely prefer the key-finding process from the first game.

But yeah more Wario ads, these things are great:

I miss the creativity of ML2 - flying broomstick enemies, skulls with knives in them, fucking Legoland, its creativity knows no bounds, it's quite amazing given the hardware it was on. It's to the Mario series what Link's Awakening is to the Zelda series.
