Also would like to know. Traveling outside the US isn't exactly feasible just to buy video games.

>Traveling outside the US isn't exactly feasible just to buy video games.
It's very feasible, actually, you buy an airplane ticket and travel outside the US to buy videogames.
I guess you meant "favorable."

>>1274724
No, I meant feasible. The implication is economic limitations.

i think i got a bootleg game, i bought a copy of ghost and ghouls for my sega master system...it turned out to have two games on it...neither of which were ghost and ghouls...

it was like press A to lauch "hang on", press B to launch whatever the other game is.

hang on was actually made for the smaller lower capacity carts.

Turn on the Sega MS without a cart in it, you'll find Safari Hunt and Hang on built-in

Usually a "game" on those is maybe one level of something and the same things will appear over and over under slightly different titles on the menu.

ah. this had actually crossed my mind, but i never really thought to try it. yes it boots those games without any cartridge in. Thanks for solving my mystery. The cart must just be a bit dodgy/loose sometimes.

mystery solved, now why were these games built in?

ah thanks based wikipedia

3010-A

The 3010-A Master System has the original Hang-On and Safari Hunt games built into the console. Without a cartridge in the console, Hang-On could be played by pressing any button on the controller, and Safari Hunt could be played by shooting the Light Phaser at the TV screen.

As in the original 3000 model, it also has the built-in Snail Maze game play (by pressing Up and buttons 1 and 2) when no cartridge is inserted

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variations_of_the_Sega_Master_System

very interesting, i also have a snail game too.

>why were these games built in?
Sega had made a variety of small games on a cheap-to-manufacture ROM card format. They were typically 32KB or so. It wasn't too expensive to stick them in the console and boot them if no game was present. They hoped it would provide a compelling reason to buy their console rather than stick with the Famicom.

Eh, those were always a surprise.

>friend has a Master System
>Alex Kidd built in, had lots of fun
>ask my parents for a Master System
>boot it
>Sonic 1

I also knew a guy who had the Jungle Book built in.

Are those fighting games or RPG's anyway?

'Bishoujo Senshi'. Sounds like some kind of Sailor Moon ripoff. Large variety of girls, though.

Being a rusbro from latvia, I will explain some details about glorious bootleg legacy of post soviet space to whom who will read this and will give some amount of fuck. In post soviet countries we didn't have nes or true famicom, we had shitload of other asian country copies of original japanese famicom, but with 220v ac and different branding. Most popular was taiwanese dendy for russian market, but there were others. Dendy also made a dendy 2 model, which looked like mega drive, but was 8-bit. Cartridges for famicom clones were mostly bootlegs (such as picrelated) for obvious reasons, tons of multicarts, but the whole library of games wasn't that big. It was a solid chance that you or your buddy down the street had the same collection of games, but in different combos of multicarts etc. Many original games of nes or famciom never saw the light of day in their bootleg life (like super mario bros3). After the rise of mega drive, famicom clone were still popular, but were treated with some contepmt. Also, I should mention that somehow mega drives in our world region could play anything, ntsc, pal, jap releases, you name it. I remember playing contra hard corps on my pal tv, on pal mega drive, but that's another story. As for bootleg cartridges for famicom/dendy, they are almost extinct, just like mega drive and other oldies. At least, in Latvia. Like I said, for some reason people here treat old consoles like shit, I remember seeing kids crushing megadrive just for fun, so going to flea market and stumbling upon a stash of oldtimers is getting very uncommon. But it still possible. Besides, cartridges for dendy are made to this day and sometimes leak from china, taiwan and other asian regions.

When I bought games as a kid I always picked the 4-in-1 ones. They all were the same price no matter which cartridge it was so you got 4 games for the price of 1. Pretty cool.

Also for some reason the 4-in-1 always came with at least 1 good game. If you knew the names of them and didn't follow the cartridge art you had some pretty good deals.
