Hate the neclord plotline, love the Kahn. His speed deficit made it easier to resurrect people late in turns, so he was a different sort of defensive mage - soaking up the hits, re-upping the frontline, putting out steady unspectacular damage.

Neclord was much better in 1 when he was an unashamed big bad bastard, then that forced Mary Sue vampire chick absolutely ruined the Neclord arc in 2.

Suddenly Neclord was actually a weakling and a the little girl who could turn into a giant white bat and had super magical powers and bought her clothes at hot topic was retconned into being the all powerful vegetarian leader of the vampires.

Whe was without a doubt the worst character in Suikoden.

S1 takes place a few(?) years before S2. You see a number of characters come back(and look better than they did in the first game...looking at you, Apple), and of course, events from the first game are touched on(you even go back to the country to get more allies). Furthermore, you even get to recruit the first protagonist if you have game save data on the same memory card(and ohmigawd, nothing can stand before you at that point). So no...not unrelated in the slightest.

The other entries in the series lose that close of a connection, unfortunately...but they aren't retro, so that's all I'll say on that subject.

I'm starting to like the Nash character more. Since he was part of Chris' chapters in S3...and I had a HUGE bias against Chris my first play through in S3 (hugo is FC but Geddoe is still the coolest)....I liked Nash a bit because he pokes fun at the uptight Chris but nevre really cared for him.

I've played Suikoden 2 at least 7 times to completion, and I always try to use a different party members regularly, but these 5 most often turn up in my rotation, especially Flik & Viktor. Honorable mentions include Clive, Tengaar, Killey, and of course, McDohl. I used Ayda as my hunter, hooking her up with a double beat to increase speed up the hunting process near the end game. Had every character fully hooked up with the best armor and runes by the end.

Sierra is far from bad, in fact, I use her quite often. Set her up with a Darkness rune for magic, Fury or Double Beat + Power ring for physical attacks, and a Mist Robe to make up for her poor defense and she becomes an powerhouse. I do think she should have been a M range character, however.

I always had this weird compulsion with Suikoden games about playing with the most "important" story characters, in the party. or the characters that get the most development/screen time. it actually ended affecting me with a few other RPGs too, but not as much as Suikoden games.
I always have Gengen in my party in Suiko II because I love the little guy. he totally won me over with his whole captain Gengen nonsense at the start of that game. I don't even care that he's mediocre in battle, since the game is so easy anyway.

I kid. It is a bit of a change, I admit, but you're doing yourself a disservice by not beating it. If you're that concerned about being disappointed, stop playing about halfway throughwhen you kill Luca Blight in a MOTHERFUCKING MASSIVE EFFORT. The rest of the game isn't THAT critical.

As for the army battles...1's were okay, but I much preferred 2's. Lots more strategy to it(even if half of those options were pointless).

I feel that we've done a disservice, by the way. Pic related is gawdly in the game. Has anyone ever managed to get him killed? He's so awesome, even Luca Blight doesn't faze him.

I thought constructing your units in 2 and getting different traits from different people was awesome. But 80% of the combatants just whiffed past each other until some turn limit. I preferred how decisive the results were in 1.

Everyone would probably hate him less if the trip to Westminster weren't the shittiest part of the game (immediately before one of the best bits). That same fucking forest we've already seen as a dungeon, with the same music, with long ladders and if you pick the wrong one you have to go back down to get the treasure, then a dull random monster boos too.
