is the ouya worth it for emulating classic games?

>> No.1260104

For that price you could get better things like a Wii, a gcw zero or a JXD android device.

I guess it is easier to have multiple controllers on it than the last 2, but in that case the wii beats all of them.

lolz. the one system that makes a retron look good.

shit anon. it's pretty much a crappy box-PC with a crappy handphone-lite OS. you might as well plug your smartphone into a monitor and a gamepad.

Wii isn't the greatest when it comes to emulator. PS3, 360 and even an original xbox are better. PS3 supports quite a few USB controllers, including adapters.

Well, no, because the Ouya is complete and utter rubbish, I don't understand how it pulled in as much money as it did.

>> No.1260825

No. It only uses HDMI ports, which means you can't use a CRT.

High hopes and low pricetag combined with the promise of high def emulation and free games... in short, a lot of stuff people wanted to see. Great idea, poor execution.

>I don't understand how it pulled in as much money as it did.

They made a poll asking what games people would like to see on it. The poll was open-ended, so it ended up being basically Skyrim, CoD, Battlefield, etc.

Did they come out and say "Whoa, no guys, this thing's only as powerful as a smartphone, there's no way in hell we could run those games"? Nope. They didn't say anything. After awhile, people started getting the idea that an Ouya could actually run those games, then getting ideas that Ouya versions of those games were actually being developed.

It was basically a lie of omission.

Absolutely not worth it. It's just an Android box with a high price tag and massively over priced controllers. Plug your phone into your TV and your wireless dongle into your phone and do exactly the same thing, for free.

Yes and no.

If you have a PC you are better of using that. JXD is better if you want something portable.

Wii is okay but I find it overrated because I don't find its controllers to be the miracle some feel they are. They are okay.

Ouya is a decent cheap way to shove something onto a TV if you do not already have a Wii or the PC is too far for a DVI to HDMI cable. Android emulates well, and Ouya can use DS3 controllers out of the box as well as most things bluetooth connected.

So if you don't have a smart phone, or a something else to hook to a TV, or the computer is too far away, Ouya is a fairly decent lazy way to play some NES.

>Android emulates well

Not if you value good AV sync and consistent performance without frame drops.

>> No.1265078

>>1265069
It really just depends on the hardware. Some of those JXDs are quad core behemoths but it's nice that the emulators scale well to be playable on 1ghz 2010 phones too.

>> No.1265098

>>1260290
>PS3, 360 and even an original xbox are better
No 240p modes on those systems. Might as well just emulate on your PC if you don't care about that.

My phone was 150 and can run lots of games up to PSX

Also, it's portable and can make calls.

>> No.1265126

There are many aspects of retro emulation I dont really care for. Fps drops, out of sync audio, screen tearing and a few others but scaling to another aspect ratio? Even if the pixels get "wobbly" i still dont mind it.

>> No.1265164

>>1265078
No, it's not just the hardware. In general, Android has terrible latency issues and random, occasional hiccups in performance. Even my Galaxy S4, using the Google Play Edition ROM to minimize bloat, has obvious audio latency, and will occasionally drop frames or stutter. And that's a flagship phone. I don't wanna imagine how the Ouya of all things fares.

>> No.1265172

>>1265021
Yeah it's pretty close price, but the ouya is better value overall. Metal case, cooling fan, no hassle out of the box. brushed metal housings for Pi are $50 alone.

>> No.1265191

>>1265172
Oh yes I would agree. I was glad to already be familiar with bash commands for what I wanted it to do, which in Ouya would be out of the box from an app store.

>>1265069
Depends on hardware. Per dollar they are great and many of the android handhelds basically just took the idea of the PSP emulation and made it a lot better. Sure my desktop does better, but I imagine they can give the typical laptop a good run for the money.

>> No.1265239

>>1265191
Only Android handheld that rivals the typical laptop for emulation is the Shield. Even top-end phones like the Galaxy S4 falls short. Sure, you can bring price considerations into the conversation, but the fact remains that Android devices are still mostly inferior in strict regards to emulation performance, at least if you care about having good sync and minimizing performance drops.

Speaking as someone who is into audio production, android is terrible for anything audio related beyond listening to mp3s.

I have a nexus7 and ipad 2, and tho the nexus isprobably better hardware wise, the ipad destroys it for audio.
