F-Zero X has changed my life. For the better. I used to think life went by so slow, and was so dull. There never seemed to be a racing game to capture the adrenalin rush of real racing before. Then there it was, on the Nintendo 64 of all places. See, I grew up with a Playstation, which did not have even a single worthwhile racer, I know I tried them all! This made me very sad, melancholic Playstation player. Then I went to friends house who was playing F-Zero X, and I was literally glued to the controller with red eyes. We played for hours, it was ecstatic! Great game, best racer, F-Zero X!

>And its the second best racer ever made after F-Zero X.

Say what? That one doesn't even hold a candle to Road Rash 1 and 2, let alone be good enough to call itself second to F-Zero X.

It has bigger tracks, smoother gameplay, and amazing framerate, and music that doesn't rape your ears (though both those games do have at least 1 good track). The original doesn't compare at all. Even the windows 95 release of Road Rash (4? 32bit? Reloaded?) was killer, despite the controls locking up and your computer beeping at you if you held down more than 2 keys at once.

It was hideous. Everything is in that awful live-action pre-rendered style (So was 3, which was already ugly, but this just took it too far and all the animation is practically done in still images. Like turning your bike would just be that one frame of the bike being rotated as if someone were moving around a photo in front of your face. And that laughable UI. No rear-view mirrors, no nothing. Just some numbers and bars.

And that cheap MIDI music that plagued the game (Even though most people seem to mistakenly remember the Soundgarden soundtrack playing in the game when it was only in the menus for some inexplicable reason) was far worse than the Rob Hubbard Genesis soundtracks of 1 and 2, which are some of the best western soundtracks on the system. That was a great sound engine.

As nice as the larger lane tracks were, that Road Rash had a really, really unpolished feel to them. It just felt really slapped together. I got it on PC around the time it came out and although I liked it (Mostly for the cutscnes, which are probably the best thing about the game), and never ran into key binding issues since I played with a joypad, it felt more like I was playing a knockoff of Road Rash than the real thing. I don't even think the 32-bit game has anything like the Wildthing 2000. Stuff like that is what I missed.

The UI is missing from the Playstation version only (and doesn't really matter). Its in the original 3do version and the PC version.

The graphics are pretty ugly, and I thought they weren't much when I first played. But that's easily forgiven when the game speeds along at an insane framerate that's easy 3-4 times higher than the sluggish Genesis games (which honestly run choppier than a game like that on the Genesis should).

I love how SNES era Falcon was a shameless Judge Dredd ripoff. I've always wondered how popular 2000AD is in Japan, considering that a lot of the stuff in MGS is also similar to Judge Dredd.
