NO game, modern or old, simulates firearms or weapons manipulation well enough. Nobody has invented the hardware you'd need for that. A good deal of shooting is actually in your trigger pull...as in, you pull the trigger with a slight movement in the wrong direction, or too fast, or too "wrong", and the round is gonna miss entirely. You would need something like a wiimote (i.e. a cheap yet decent accelerometer) that has a haptic-feedback enabled trigger on it that can simulate trigger break.
Then there's all of the other things about weapons manipulation that would be retardedly difficult to get right. How do you simulate a stovepipe and how to clear it? How do you simulate squib loads? FTF? All sorts of things that would be hard to simulate, yet are all very real things that someone used to shooting is used to dealing with...

Anyway, you want a "more realistic" shooting experience in games?
write up some DECORATE to
a) make all of doom's weapons shoot dead on accurate
b) use setpitch() and setangle() to simulate recoil&followthrough

I wrote a couple of WADs for personal use that do this with default doom weapons and it's actually pretty fun; still plays like doom, but is a tad more "realistic"...

That'd depend on the skill of the operator, wouldn't it? As in, accuracy would be dependent on the character you're playing, perhaps with some kind of skill level system?

Well, that could be handled with the reload button, mainly.
You get a stovepipe, so either you press the reload button to manually clear it, or part of it's animation is the character racking the charging-handle/picking out the casing.
Squibs would be a bit harder to deal with in the field, you'd probably have to take the weapon apart, depending on what kind of weapon
Failure To Feed would probably be solved by taking out the magazine, pulling back the charging handle, maybe some shaking to get out the missfed rounds, and if there's too many missfeeds/doublefeeds, the magazine would be discarded entirely.

I'm working on a simple multiplayer skin wad, with SKININFO, SNDINFO, sound effects, and sprites. It's in the same structure as every other skin wad I've seen and played, yet whenever I try to run it, I get this error:

It's trying to read SNDINFO as a sprite for some reason. It was doing that earlier with various sound effects, too, until I renamed them. And it was always "frame D" for some reason.

Now then, in Zdoom, you can use the special Line_SetBlocking in either ACS, or (if you for some reason absolutely HAVE to use vanilla doom map format, as opposed to doom-in-hexen) use decorate to define a SwitchableDecoration actor that has TNT1A0 as it's sprite for all states that has Line_SetBlocking on one of it's active-state frames, and then place that said actor directly in front of your switch, so as to trigger the actor rather than the switch. Yeah, ghetto as fuck method, but it is what it is (I am forced to use Eureka, which doesn't support doom-in-hexen or ACS so I have to be this ghetto when mapping for zdoom)

Make sure the SNDINFO lump isn't within the sprite markers, that can mess things up (also, make sure graphics are between those markers if you want them to load properly).

I had a problem working on a decorate weapon back when I was younger, damn near had a rage aneurysm until I spotted I hadn't put in the brackets in the decorate code. Felt like a drooling retard after that.

Linearity is not necessarily a bad thing.

What matters is the quality of the fights.
Look at Hell Revealed 2's Level 29, that's pretty linear but it's great.

The SMG sounded kind of exactly like a real suppressed sub-machinegun, with the clicking of the action being audible over the gasses and such. I liked how it was accurate and controllable.

The pistol was just godawful though, and the rockets/plasma were quite disappointing. Only decent "plasma gun" in a game I can remember was the particle rifle in F.E.A.R. It sounded kind of like an old-timey camera flash, but with a weird whirring sound. It instantly turned bad guys into smoking charred skeletons, and it looked like a really bulky FS200 or something, not the glowing blob-firing space ship in Doom 3.

I kinda agree.

If I could change some things, I'd make the pistol fire as fast as you could click/press the button, and it would make kind of a loud, yet smooth crack, the shotgun would actually be able to score at least a basket-ball sized pattern at 25 meters, instead of having the accuracy of a keyholing AK, it would make a bit more of a boom, but also produce an echo, the SMG I would make fire in bursts of 3, and just slightly faster, it would sound something like the Quake 2 SMG, the chaingun would hold 100 rounds in a magazine instead of just 60, and it would fire 2.5 times as fast (because it fires way too slow to justify six barrels), sound is alright as it is, I guess, but it could use a bit of an echo.

Rocketlauncher would make a loud, yet very dull thud when fired, and then a loud hiss from the rocket, the grenades should be able to be thrown with the help of a button, they were actually very handy, but the problem was that you had to reach for them by scrolling through your inventory, which you sometimes just didn't have the time to do, it should make a loud boom, the explosion bigger, while also throwing shrapnel.
Furthermore, the grenade shouldn't fucking bounce like it does, I've lost count at how many times I've lobbed a grenade at something, only for the cocksucker to bounce at a step of a stair right back at my direction.

Plasma can keep it's sound, but it should fire about twice as fast, to mimic the original plasma gun. BFG is also alright, though I suppose it would be awesome if it bathed the room in green light when fired.

Chainsaw is perfect as it is.

I was too afraid to use it against Thomas Kelly (or, what used to be Thomas Kelly).
Personally, I loved using it against the Tentacle Commando's (one of my favorite enemies), if you sprinted at them as soon as you saw them, with the chainsaw in full rev, and ducked as soon as you made physical contact with him, you could kill him without him scoring a single hit at you.

as far as I know both guns have same effective dps 20 per plasma bolt and 10 plasma beats per second which makes 200 dps. in QL counterpart plasma balls have a pre-step for like 20 feet (acts like a hitscan weapon from close quarters) then they reduced down to their normal speed of 2000 ups. Both guns have solid dps but Q3A one is harder to master.

I'd say we could safely dock a couple of the new monsters. I dont remember any fatso variations though.
We could easily minus the acolyte guys, the humans who spoke lines from blood, died in about 2 bullets.

I'm making a WAD of my own that will have custom assets, though I'm keeping as many out as I can. The only time new monsters should come in (in my personal opinion) is if they fill a niche other monsters just cant, provide a different challenge or add to a theme.

Eg: The lion/baron variants with the shields are a good mixup of the theme as the shield adds to their danger and makes them tougher.

Overall though I like custom assets just because it helps add to themes and areas can be detailed out a lot more. I mean, imagine trying to make something like winters fury using only stock stuff.
Even Sunder uses custom assets in the form of textures (and music).

Me too, I loved going toe to toe with the monsters! I'm kind of disappointed the chainsaw wasn't in the expansion or Lost Mission DLC, I was kind of looking forward to murdering more demons.
There's nothing quite like the thrill of dancing about a Hellknight, dodging his projectiles and swings, just to move in and cut him with the chainsaw, and retreat just as he recovers from his punch/throw, and dodge the next. Gave me some adrenaline, made me feel like a bad motherfucker.

Mancubi were tricky though, since they fired in volleys, and often had cherubs. Even when you score a hit on them with the saw, they'd often wheel around and smack you with their cannon arm. Surprisingly agile for a tubster.

She's still around? I thought she would have faded into obscurity by now.

Yeah, I'm kinda aware of this, but unfortunately I kinda have to accept that this is gonna be an issue. I'm specifically going for that animu look though for the monsters (which in itself is a style that often relies on hair and eye color for character identity), which leaves a little less room for variation on that part.
