In light of the recent successful Childhood Abominations thread, lets discuss the stupid shit we believed about games as kids.

I firmly believed in that there was a way to get the Pokegods and Pikablu by using cheats in Pokemon Red.

I also believed that there was a way you could have a meeting with Giovanni, and join Team Rocket. Some guy at school told me that. Dick.

Itt: confess to your childhood retardation

In Ultima Underworld, there's a little plaque on one of the lower levels saying "Thou canst not defeat the Drakhai". For years and years, I thought the Drakhai was the name for that invisible monster alluded to in the manual, and that if I wandered in the wrong pattern, it would kill me.

Then, much later, I played the wing commanders. I very belatedly got that joke.

There's so many to do with Pokemon. A friend of mine swore to me that if you trained a Level 100 Magikarp (no Daycare or Rare Candies), one of the NPCs in a Pokemon Centre would trade you Mew for it.

Anyway, the cheat told me that if you gave that specific magikarp thats given to you in the game to the daycare center, leave it there to level up to level 50, take it out and level it up to level 51 yourself, it would evolve into Mew.

I never finished it because I was to lazy and impatient. But my good friends temper challenged older brother did when I told him about it. He was not happy.....

Thinking back on it though, that was probably an honest misinterpretation of how Donkey can turn into a rhino and Lanky into a swordfish.

I also heard one about getting Mewtwo in SSB64. You had to start a CPU match against a lvl9 opponent with 99 stocks and take all of theirs without taking damage, dying, or doing any damage to them.
The funny thing is that's actually really easy to do because of a glitch in lvl9 Link's AI.

Oddly enough, it has some truth to it. Due to the way RBY's RNG works, pressing any buttons at any time will change the random number being used by the game at that point, so if you throw the ball then press B before it hits the pokemon (when the game determines whether it'll be caught or not) it will affect the Random Number being used for the capture.

There's no way to tell whether you fucked yourself out of a capture or changed a non-capture into an actual capture though, so doing it is very pointless unless you're on an emulator using savestates.

Here are two Final Fantasy rumors from late '90s:

First one claimed that you could getting Sephiroth's Super Nova summon in FFVII by constantly talking to everyone in Junon on disc 3.

Second one claimed you could turn Ramza into a Dark Knight in FFT by following very specific instructions including stuff like making him a priest for the Zirekile Falls fight and later on killing him using the exact same set of equipment he had on when he joined your party.

Obviously both were lies but given that I was on the "Playstation FFs are the best shit ever!" phase at the time I and some of my friends spend ages on trying to make these happen. IIRC the FFVII one actually was on a English(not my native language) gaming magazine that also had instructions on beating the WEAPONS so it felt like genuine information but looking back it probably was an April Fools prank.

The confusion comes from the name of the item being "(a) 1/35 soldier" in singular, ie. one toy soldier (that's 1 to 35 scale), while the item description refers to "armoured attack soldierS, 12 in the set" in plural, ie. a box with 12 toy soldiers. So people assume that since the name refers to a single soldier and the description to a set of twelve, there must be 11 other ones in the game, and poossibly a reward for callecting them all. Had the text been clearer that it is infact a box of soldiers rather than a single one, there'd have been no confusion.

I was the youngest kid on my street, and we were all into Pokemon. Overall I was well liked and all that, never picked on for being noticably younger but from time to time I'd get screwed over in card trades and things like that. One time I traded a foil Japanese Clefable for a shitty ass Persian. My parents hunted that guy down and made him apologize, we were cool after that. I have an older cousin who was into Pokemon at the time as well, and he knew his way around GameFAQs so I knew the schoolyard lies were bullshit and we figured out the Missingno inventory glitch, which I knew to never catch. I maxed out on Master Balls and Rare Candies. Maxed out my party's level and caught whatever I wanted, shit was cash. However, one little lie I was told sticks out to me because it was my favorite dude out of the "big kids" and also pretty believable.
Level up a Caterpie to 100 (exp only, Rare Candies won't cut it) and it will learn "Climb", a discarded HM which lets you climb up and down trees. The upper canopy can trigger random encounters with Flying type and Bug type Pokémon. A certain tree, however, is a secret entrance to a secret city. Sky City. I don't remember which tree was said to be the one and I never tried it, but I found it plausible.

While digging through my inventory, I noticed there was a "Toss" function. So I did what any sensible child would do and walk to the tile next to the tree and tossed all of my items at it.

This didn't work of course, so I consulted a guide. But, since I didn't want to spoil the game for myself, I looked at one that was very vague. I noticed that it said on a certain day, a guy near the tree will hand you a rock. Of course this meant that I had to wait to get that rock and that'd knock the tree down! It was genius!

To be fair, they are half right. In Gen 1, crits were based on speed (like a lot of old school RPGs), and Raichu was among the fastest Pokemon that could use it. No one knew, or payed attention, to same type damage bonuses, which might surprised those who suggest using this move on Tauros instead (second fastest normal type in Gen 1, normal with the highest attack). Swift might have a lot of PP, but Gen 1's accuracy calculations were based on fractions of 256 instead of predetermined accuracies like in gen 2.

Funny, in Gen 1, Blizzard had a good chance to hit. Every game afterwards, Blizzard only works if the opponent uses it when your Pokemon has low HP. If your Pokemon does survive, it freezes it.

The game itself is fucking broken though.
Me and two friends recently undertook a project where you had to pick one of the 3 starters and could only use that for the entire game (you can use fodder for HM's but you could not use them in battle), you were never allowed to evolve that starter, and you could not teach it any TM's it could only learn moves that it learns naturally. You also could not buy any items and could only use items that you found on the world map. You had to fight every wild Pokemon that appeared and you had to fight every single trainer in the game as well and if you died you had to start from the very beginning.

I at first thought it would be impossible because I've been spoiled by the balance of the later Pokemon games, but alas I had forgotten how broken Blue version one and my Charmander just fucking steamrolled through the game and had absolutely no issue with beating the Elite 4.

If anyone remembers AOL 2.0 from way back, they used to have a "Video Games" tab or something like that. Basically NO ONE thought ANYONE EVER would have any reason to make something up on the internet so people would post random shit there.

Basically a lot of rumors would get started. I looked everywhere on my harddrive for this picture of Golbez in Final Fantasy 6(3) on SNES. They were like "oh you can turn Gogo into Golbez by doing these 4 steps" and since the internet was brand spanking new, it looked legit. Plus the west only knew about FF2 and FF3 on SNES. I wish I could find the picture for you all.

Up until last year the house flooded I still had some text files I printed out from back then with rumors from Final Fantasy to Secret of Mana. Basically there was the standard 'how to get Kefka', 'how to revive General Leo', etc. But there was some unique stuff like "circle Kefka's tower to get the Light Sword" or something. Or "before you ride the mine cart in the esper tower, head to this corner and search for some Blade".

There was another about how to turn Gogo into Daryl. OF COURSE all the rumors about Shadow's extra dreams. How to get Siegfried to join your party. And some more I can't remember.

I tried ALL of these but they never worked. I did have fun with some game shark codes in FF4 with the dummy items. I had no idea there were extra summons on the SNES from normal enemies (like Imp or Cockatrice).

But one of my favorite rumors was Akuma in Resident Evil 2. Pic related.
