Everyone has a good Blockbuster game story

>Waiting for that new game to come out
>Getting to the store early while they still have copies
>Older cartridge games with a 100% save file in slot 1
>Going into that file and not knowing WHAT the fuck was happening

I remember doing that a lot with Zelda games. In Majora's Mask, I somehow figured out to get on top of the clocktower at midnight of the third night.
I couldn't figure out what to do from there so I went through the menu trying all the different masks.
Eventually saw a song called "Song of Soaring", but being a stupid kid I thought it meant sore-ing, like it would make enemies sore. Obviously, to no avail, I went back and started the second file.

Being stupid and young was hard.

First time I went to Blockbuster was when word got out they were clearing out their Virtual Boys. Some people reportedly were able to buy the VB with a hard storage case, and couple of games for $30. While I did find VB systems, I found no such deal at any of the BBs here.

I would stop by periodically thereafter to see what was in the clearance bins. Only item of note I found was some Game Factory cartridges.

Yeah you dodged a bullet I rented Krusty's Super Fun house as a kid. I'd rent anything Simpsons related. That fucking game.

However my blockbuster story is this:
>See Adam's Family: Pugley's Scavenger Hunt in Nintendo Power.
>Be a kid not knowing they were going to hype it up even if it's trash.
>Get my parents to rent it for me.
>Play it most of the night realize I don't like the game at about oh bout 7-8pm.
>Still stay up late playing it anyway.
>Game freezes on me.
>Try it again in the morning freezes on me I was not upset that happened.
>We returned it freezes on the guy at the store get a replacement rental pick a different game.

I wanna say the game I chose to replace it with was Contra 3 but for the life of me I can't remember. I also bought the SNES version of Wolfenstien 3D from a Blockbuster once. I don't remember selling the game but I'll be damned if I still have the cart.

Our two Family Videos would always have their copies stolen, and somehow the video store would keep replacing them. This was before the rerelease too, so I have no idea how or why they were sitting on so many.

I actually rented games EVERY weekend from about 1988 to around 1997, so I have a lot of memories about 'em. The one that sticks in my mind the most is when I rented Final Fantasy 2 for the first time from a Hastings, and I had Rydia's return blown for me due to all the save slots having her on them when I started the game.

Was always nice to rerent RPGs after a 2-3 week gap, and finding that whoever rented it in the meantime didn't touch your saved game.

Maybe they had a policy where for every day the tape wasn't back with them, they added on the cost as if it had been rented that day + extra.

My rental place was in a small town during the ps1 era, he only had ~10 games at one time. £2.50 for 2 nights was normal, I think, but if you missed the day to bring it back it cost £3 for each extra night or something crazy.

You had to pay a large deposit the first time you rented a game from him which he said he'd deduct from the cost if you wanted to buy an ex-hire game.

I was very glad to visit home and see that asshole went out of business a few years ago.

Holy shit. I used to rent DBGTFB for weeks on end too. I had a Super Saiyan Little Goku built up to level 111 until some faggot stole my memory card. Did you ever build up a character?

I have a cable access show about vidya I'm working on and I'm making a standing challenge. Anyone willing to battle my build up mode SSJ4 Goku can get a hold of me and battle their build up character. The build up mode is completely broken and I've spent months leveling up my character and exploiting the system so I have a few super over powered attacks. It's doubtful anyone will accept the challenge but I think it's hilarious that the actual challenge is who's autistic enough to level a guy up strong enough to take mine on.

Here's the challenge promo I'll be putting at the end of each episode. If you're near Dayton Oh and want to have a bad ass battle feel free to train a cahracter.

It's kind of a waste of money but it's kind of not, depending on how you look at it.

Games are about the experience. How much of the experience do you really capture from the average game when playing it longer than the 3-5 day rental period, assuming you're spending most of your free time playing it? Hell, some games are beaten with 100% completion in less time than that.

I realize the purpose isn't to blitz through everything, but rather to enjoy the experience. Even still, there's diminishing returns after a pretty short time period in most games.

Having it only for a short time also gives it artificial value in making it feel scarce. It turns the act of playing and having a game into an event that you can't just pick up and experience at any given time. It's like seeing a movie at a theater, but a much better deal. Granted, this is less than ideal for something you KNOW beyond all doubt you're going to love and play for a while. But with most games, we really don't know until we play them.

I completely believe renting is worth it and I don't think that's nostalgia speaking at all.

I think all physical game rental places will be gone one day. Redbox doesn't count because it works differently. Even that will probably run into problems as more things become digital. I'd imagine movies might go the same way, but they're mainstream enough that it could take a while longer.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm sure we'll see Steam-style digital rental popping up in the future. I hope so anyway.

>>1249054
Yeah, I know what you mean man. It's truly a special experience and actually makes you remember why games are fun. I've realized just having games all the time makes me set them down and never get back to them soon enough (years pass) because "I'll get to it eventually". By then the price has dropped so much that its lost 90% of its value just sitting around and it isn't so fresh anymore.

I remember when I got a SNES for Christmas my dad took me to rent games. Our grocery store had a video rental area. I got two games one of which was Aliens VS Predator. I loved it as a kid, still enjoy it. I forget what the other game was.

Anyone else find they ended up appreciating games that they rented way more than games they actually owned? Whenever I rented a game, I'd milk it totally dry of gameplay, then as soon as I'd take it back I'd miss it so much, meanwhile I'd take all the games sitting on my shelf for granted.

>> No.1252756

There was that other guy in this thread who brought up the same psychology behind playing rented games. I think we appreciated them more because we knew we could never afford them, and only had so much time to beat the living hell out of it. God knows everything took a backseat when I came home with a rented game every time.

Japanese version isn't worth anything. It's the original US release that USED to be worth something. It's value plummeted once the rerelease came out in 2002 or so, since it's the exact same game with a different label.

Blockbuster showed me that Mario games could be bad.

>Be about 6
>See a game called "Mario is Missing"
>Ask dad if I can rent it
>Take it home and pop it in
>Game is nothing like the other Mario games
>Stuck walking around cities with no idea where to go
>Come to realize that this game is basically like a school lesson

Those 5 days felt like an eternity. However, Blockbuster did introduce me to Super Mario RPG. I also believe I got to use the Pokemon Snap Station once.

Does anyone else find it miserably depressing that we now know every single detail about every game that comes out sometimes even before its out. Its really hard to go to Gamestop and find a game I havent heard about and know is going to be good or bad or even just browsing steam. Theres not surprise but theres also no disappointment, its a weird trade off.

The reason Rental places died was because of the internet in general and the lightning fast travel of knowledge and information, not just because of netflix.

I have no kids and am basically a NEET. After I got laid off I've spent the past few years in a deep dark depression with vidya being the only thing keeping me going. Dark times brother. It's only very recent I've been mentally stable enough to leave my house and start interacting with with people. I've managed to get a pretty cool girlfriend and start doing normal person things. Who knows maybe some day I'll contribute to the world in some way.

When Deus Ex Human Revolution came out I beat it in two days on a red box rental. At my lowest point I watched all 7 seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in a week and a half. That's a lot of not moving. I'm glad I'm not such a pathetic wreck anymore. The days where you just sleep for 20 hours because you can't muster the will to shower or eat are pretty lame and pathetic.

Man I used to love Jumbo Video, I'd eat the free popcorn until my mouth was dryer than your grandmother's gooch while looking at vhs cases and video games for consoles that I was not allowed to have. I miss browsing in movie rental places and having to decide on one thing to watch instead of having every movie available online 24/7. Kinda. I still remember the distinct squeal of my VHS player rewinding, and the higher pitched high-speed rewind button which would fuck up your tapes hella fast. You fuckers better have rewound your movies and games before you returned them.

Hell, it's perfect for modern games. Totally glad I only rented Bioshock Infinite since I beat it in like 2 days.

Not Blockbuster, but I had a place nearby called Movie Mania which had a few more stores in the area. It eventually got bought out by a slightly larger chain called Movie Gallery. Anyway, two tales that spring to mind:

>Be like 7
>Rent Rampage for N64, play with older bro
>Drunk mom smashes the game for being evil
>Guess dad had to pay for it

>Be like 15
>Dad drops me and friend off while he's at a pharmacy for a bit
>Wonder what the porn section looks like
>"I bet only like handicapped people still rent porn"
>Dude in a fucking wheelchair rolls out
>Friend and I hide

I remember the first game my brother and I ever rented was We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story for Sega Genesis.

I started renting stuff last year, Blockbuster then Gamefly. I do tend to rush through the game and miss a few things but ive either rented the same twice or more, or stopped halfway to return then buy/keep forever so i can spend more time with it.

I mean with PS+'s free games and various other titles that take like 3 days to beat with unworthy post-game content, i actually saved money through renting. if i do lose anything, i just have less games to trade-in at gamestop, but whatever.
