When I was in high school back in the early part of the 00s I remember going to retro game stores and buying several NES titles for as low as $5-$10 because they were "old games nobody wanted". I built a pretty incredible collection as a result...

What exactly happened?

This is probably a silly question, but what if a seller offers to meet somewhere to do the transaction?

i.e. not somewhere I can test to see if the console actually works when plugged in.

Have any of you gotten burned like this? The guy is selling like 20 of the same consoles and a shit ton of games, so I imagine he's a reseller. He says his merch works (but of course he fucking would)

Any advice?? He's got the best deals I can get without perusing ebay for weeks..

$400 for the US Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog.

In case you don't know, the US release of the game is literally just a European copy with a UPC sticker slapped on the back of the box.

This is how I meet everyone on FB. I've gotten burned a few times. I bought an SNES with 9 games and an NES with a couple of controllers for $50 from this couple who always lowball everyone else on anything they want. Someone sells vidya for $10, they ask for it for $2. Someone sells a car for $1500, they say "I'll give ya $300 cash today" and always proclaim that because they're X amount of time from X town, that they want it for cheaper. Anyway, I asked if they'd go down to $40 and they stayed firm on $50. I met them and the SNES looked like shit. No hinges, dirty and grungy.

Tested the games and at first they didn't work. The SNES powered on but I had a black screen. I thought 'ohhhh hell no' and was going to message them and call them on their bullshit when I tried the games on another SNES. They all worked. The NES works, but not that well. Probably just needs a new pin connector.

Ebay isn't bad, you just need a good deal of luck. I have picked up decent NES games for two or three pounds, all it requires is a good deal of sniping and deal hunting. Also look for spelling errors and games that have been mislabeled. Another thing to do is buy disc games without the box, then buy a plain dvd box and print a cover for it if you are not interested in the authenticity of the box.

I looked it up and there was a girl version of the game made, but nothing about this looks legitimate. Did Japanese PS1 games use not blue/black CD bottoms? Otherwise I'm totally sure this is fake.

>he stands ontop of a box and stares at you the whole time
>implying someone is going to steal his overpriced dirty shit

to this day I have never seen anyone actually buy something from him. Unfortunately he's the only one who sells games there on a regular basis. The other guy shows up sporadically, and I think is trying to focus on other things, but for some reason ends up with more and more games to sell.

he had a GBA SP with a copy of pokemon yellow in it,
someone picked it up and asked him how much, he said £20 for both.
The guy decided not to buy and walked away.
I waited til he'd gone and asked if he'd sell pokemon yellow on its own (Cart was in perfect condition). He said sure, but he'd have to charge me £3 instead of £2 since it's a pokemon game.

my copy of yellow was pretty beat up and the label was torn so i was glad to get a new one for £3 when the ebay price is usually around £30.
Also that same day a guy sold me an NES with 2 controllers and a copy of battletoads double dragon for £20.
The game would have cost me £35 on it's own on ebay at the very least.

Texfag here. I dunno where you get the idea that we're loaded with retro, cause it ain't true.
I have never, not even once, seen any thing retro besides genesis sports games in thrift stores (and theres 8 around me that I hit bi-weekly), the flea markets are always dominated by one or two people who only have a handfull of overpriced and dirty games, and nothing ever pops up on craigslist that isnt 6th/7th gen. and even then its just overpriced PS2's and Wii's.

There is a chain of retro stores though, gamexchange, which isn't much of a chain, as they're all run differently. The one closest to me (30 minutes, as opposed to 1 1/2 hours) is run completely different from all the others, most of the staff has been there 2+ years, and the prices are lower than in the other stores (which goes great with their buy 3 $7.99 and under, and get the cheapest for free.). But they are the ONLY place around to buy things at a reasonable price. actually in most cases they're the only pace around to by retro vidya at all.

I'm not in buttfuck nowhere either, I live an hour north of Dallas.

Best places to find vidya are going to be east/west coast, and the center of large cities. But prices will also be higher there, and with 200% more reseller.

how is something that's a little over 30 years old vintage? Stuff that's vintage is much older than that. You can keep your prices high, sure, and you'll have uneducated people buying them still. That does not keep you from being a rip-off artist. I get reasonable prices for my games all the time without consulting the internet, let alone a shitty seller like you. I'd go to video game price chart and get a rough estimate. VGPC takes an average of what a game is being sold for from eBay, Half, Amazon and other sites and gives an estimate of what they're being sold for. >>1279415 is me. I bought Super Metroid (paid $85), DD3 (paid $15), TMNT3 (paid $20) from a retro shop and TMNT 2 (paid $12) from a reseller. I don't mind the average price of what it's going for online, but when someone wants $25 for SMB/DH, I gotta laugh and walk out. If I were selling my collection, I'd keep it in a ball bark range of what it's going for. Something like Gun Nac, the least I'd take is $70. It really depends on the cosmetic condition of the SNES, because even with the second model, oxidizing plastic (the "yellowing" effect) remained a problem not due to sunlight exposure or being in a residence with smoking, but inherent exposure to the air.

One thing that will really help your deal would be having the full set of official things that came with the system. In your case, I'd make sure that all audio/video cables you use to hook it up are from Nintendo.

The multi-AV has Nintendo's logomark, as does the RF auto-switch, which is identical to the one used on the NES (the grey box with coax input and output with an RCA male jack that plugs into the console). The AC adapter should also have some kind of Nintendo logomark and an indicator that it's designed for the SNES you're using.
