Well, eBay isn't shit per-se, but it's definitely overpriced (you can get lucky, but still)

Craigslist is hit or miss: there are occasionally good deals there, but they're often sold within minutes of being posted since the reseller scum lurks while refreshing every 5 minutes

i.e. not somewhere I can test to see if the console actually works when plugged in.

Have any of you gotten burned like this? The guy is selling like 20 of the same consoles and a shit ton of games, so I imagine he's a reseller. He says his merch works (but of course he fucking would)

Any advice?? He's got the best deals I can get without perusing ebay for weeks..

$400 for the US Master System version of Sonic the Hedgehog.

In case you don't know, the US release of the game is literally just a European copy with a UPC sticker slapped on the back of the box.

Even if this still had the sticker, I think $400 might be excessive for a copy that's in otherwise piss-poor condition.

Helps to join a retro game group on facebook. There are a good number of deals to be found on one with a member count of 500 or more. Also would be smart to friend a couple of game collectors as they usually have doubles that they'd most likely sell to you on the cheap.

This is how I meet everyone on FB. I've gotten burned a few times. I bought an SNES with 9 games and an NES with a couple of controllers for $50 from this couple who always lowball everyone else on anything they want. Someone sells vidya for $10, they ask for it for $2. Someone sells a car for $1500, they say "I'll give ya $300 cash today" and always proclaim that because they're X amount of time from X town, that they want it for cheaper. Anyway, I asked if they'd go down to $40 and they stayed firm on $50. I met them and the SNES looked like shit. No hinges, dirty and grungy.

Tested the games and at first they didn't work. The SNES powered on but I had a black screen. I thought 'ohhhh hell no' and was going to message them and call them on their bullshit when I tried the games on another SNES. They all worked. The NES works, but not that well. Probably just needs a new pin connector.

Sounds pretty good to me. Other than a Double Dragon V cartridge only I found at a thrift store last week it's been a long, long time since I've gotten any S/NES for a dollar each.

There's a pretty based import shop that sells sports/sim/rpg S/Fami games 3/$5 though. I've bought quite a few of those.

Ebay isn't bad, you just need a good deal of luck. I have picked up decent NES games for two or three pounds, all it requires is a good deal of sniping and deal hunting. Also look for spelling errors and games that have been mislabeled. Another thing to do is buy disc games without the box, then buy a plain dvd box and print a cover for it if you are not interested in the authenticity of the box.

Living in a small town truly is suffering. Local classifieds are dead as fuck, and overpriced to hell when something does turn up ($80 for an N64 isn't normal, but with rural fuckheads it is). I might get lucky at ONE garage sale, ONCE a summer. Most of the time people are just selling kitsch garbage here. The pawn shops very rarely turn anything up either. I tend to either do the eBay thing or drive into the cities.

As a PC game collector, I absolutely love resellers. Or did. No one actually buys or sells PC games anymore.

I remember walking out of one place with the Worms collection (2, World Party, Armageddon, and a demo of Blast), Duke 3D Atomic Edition, and Die by the Sword complete with the box and limited edition necklace pen for $10. But at the same time this guy was selling refurbished NES's for $100, and a 2600 was nearly $400.

not really today i picked up a 1chip snes for a few bucks. it needs to be cleaned internally and cords but i can get all those things and still sell it for a profit. and remember a lot of gems are brought in by people turning them in for store credit.

my copy of yellow was pretty beat up and the label was torn so i was glad to get a new one for £3 when the ebay price is usually around £30.
Also that same day a guy sold me an NES with 2 controllers and a copy of battletoads double dragon for £20.

I have never, not even once, seen any thing retro besides genesis sports games in thrift stores (and theres 8 around me that I hit bi-weekly), the flea markets are always dominated by one or two people who only have a handfull of overpriced and dirty games, and nothing ever pops up on craigslist that isnt 6th/7th gen. and even then its just overpriced PS2's and Wii's.

There is a chain of retro stores though, gamexchange, which isn't much of a chain, as they're all run differently. The one closest to me (30 minutes, as opposed to 1 1/2 hours) is run completely different from all the others, most of the staff has been there 2+ years, and the prices are lower than in the other stores (which goes great with their buy 3 $7.99 and under, and get the cheapest for free.). But they are the ONLY place around to buy things at a reasonable price. actually in most cases they're the only pace around to by retro vidya at all.

I'm not in buttfuck nowhere either, I live an hour north of Dallas.

Best places to find vidya are going to be east/west coast, and the center of large cities. But prices will also be higher there, and with 200% more reseller.

Top-teir N64 games have basically held their value (SM64, OoT, MM, SSB), while others are reasonably priced. Same goes for NES too.

FC and SFC are especially cheap. I just got Rockman IV, V and the first Parodius game for ¥1000 each.

One thing that will really help your deal would be having the full set of official things that came with the system. In your case, I'd make sure that all audio/video cables you use to hook it up are from Nintendo.

That almost looks like the plug for the Genesis composite cable. I heard it's some kind of standardized connector, so my guess is finding one with a coaxial plug shouldn't be too hard to find.

Same thing happens with the PSUs on my 2600, NES, and Genesis. Seeing the pretty reasonable prices right now for a working Twin Famicom on Ebay, despite $60 shipping charges being a new thing for imported items, I don't know if this is too good to be true.

I don't know what that is, but it sounds better. I'd be happy just to get a working Famicom with a disk system for under $200 considering the oddly reasonable pricing of Japanese and FDS games that aren't the original Zelda or Mario Bros. 2.

Ice Climber, for example, is only $12, which, funnily enough, is about what several "retro" shops would price it at on NES with a cartridge that gets slightly bent every time I put it in.

Woah, I was just on ebay comparing the price of Akumajou Densetsu to where I usually buy my games and came across this.

Anyone know what this is (judging by the poorly translated title I can guess it's a Famicom test bridge for the SFC for diagnostics and shit)? I was thinking of picking this up, but if any of you want it more, by all means go ahead.

Because I want to play some imports on the go and I also am curious if some bootlegs I have will boot on an unmodified Japanese console.

I felt like I got a pretty good deal but now that it's after the fact I am wondering why there's an NTSC-U game included with an NTSC-J console.

I guess I'll find out in a few days - unless anyone knows of some difference in the top of SCPH-100s vs SCPH-101s

I guess if it comes and it's not as described I can probably get a full refund and just use the money to buy one of those PS-X-Change discs.
