Anyone as a kid used to get really scared of something random in a retro game?

As pictured, the Spring Yard Zone boss used to scare the shit out of me for some reason and I would always reset the Megadrive and just start from the start again. It was terrifying when he destroyed the blocks when he came down because I knew that I would run out of blocks and die.

Also I think it was the third level in DOOM, the blue keycard door where behind it was a really claustrophobic maze with the first encounter with Pinky on the lower difficulty levels.

Shit made me panic so hard

On Road Rash, the cutscenes involving police dogs scared the shit out of me. I had the demo and played the fuck out of the one track that it had, my parents got me the full game for Christmas and after I got caught by the police for the first time I didn't want to play it for ages.

In Doom II I used to be terrified of the third level because of "fuzzy stuff in the water", aka Spectres.

The ghosts in Sandopolis scared me.

I was also freaked out pretty bad by Metropolis having a third zone. Shit came outta left field. Then the boss trashed me.

My friend had Doom II on his computer when I was like 8 or 9. For some reason I'd find that first level really fucking scary. Just the music itself used to freak me out. I remember I was at his house once and he put Doom II and then left the room as soon as he loaded it up. After like ten seconds I followed after him. lel.

It's weird because my aunt had the original Doom on her computer and I'd play it without being scared of it... but she didn't have sound so maybe it was the sound that made me scared.

By the time I was 10 I didn't give a shit though and had beaten both games on my own PC and no fucks were given.

In Blood the screams of the hooded guys used to make me bad when I was 11. I thought it sounded terrible and actually felt like it was killing my innocence and turning me into a psychopath. Kek.

Same thing with those suffering guys in Quake II. The

etc.

Metropolis Zone is a deviously designed stage. It was a total 90 degree upshot in difficulty after so many "easy but somewhat challenging" stages, and wrecked havoc with Super Sonic if you thought you'd just breeze through it like every other level.

Hm, this one is a bit tricky for me. The only things I can think of are drowning in Sonic and some of the random places and feels in Myst and Riven. I remember getting really freaked out by a comic book about Hell as a kid though, was probably a bit too mature for me at the age I was at.

Recently though, I was reading about different bootleg carts and found Somari. I looked up a video of Spring Yard Zone on Youtube and it made me feel like I was in a bad trip. It's just strange to think that some guys in Taiwan or wherever sat down in the 90's and built such a shitty game, and kids actually played through it and didn't even think twice because they knew nothing different.

I distinctly can still remember a very short nightmare I had when I was probably 5-7, where images of doing things with my family in weird places I'd never seen mixed with a flat underwater Sonic 2 level with a spike wall advancing from the left; all the while the drowing music was playing with the countdown overlaid on top of everything. That and three other dreams are the only ones that I can clearly pick out.

Pretty much any sort of glitch that shows garbage graphics, messes up the sound or otherwise makes the games glitchy and unexpected still freaks me out. When I tried the Glitch City trick on Pokemon Yellow I turned that shit off in a second.

also in non-/vr/ I pulled the cartridge out during a battle on Pokemon Sapphire. That fucking noise still haunts me when games glitch out

first time I was ever scared of a game was when I was around 8, so back in 1993.
the original gameboy was my first console (well, handheld, but still) and I got a few games with it.
wizards & warriors gave me a hard time, but I eventually got good at it. I was playing, this one morning, sitting at the kitchen table with my younger brother watching. it was the first time I got this far, and we were all excited to see what was coming next.
I got to this boss, several stages into the game. and as soon as I walked to the right and the big skull boss scrolls in, me and my brother both let out a loud scream and I immediately turned the thing off.
I think it was months before I played that game again..

I was like 10 playing Home Alone for the Game Boy.
I just gathered everything I needed to go into the basement.
I told my older cousin and he said "oh yeah, I remember that. I went down there and got killed by a skinhead".
I didn't know what a skinhead was, but my head filled with visions of a horrible, boneless, eyeless face flapping in the air before swooping down to devour Macaulay Culkin.

I didn't go into that basement until like months later. Then mom told me what a skinhead was.

I was just scared of dying or losing in games in general, so I would always play "safe" games like Sim City and Mario Paint. When I would play Lode Runner, I'd pretty much only use the stage editor to build my own stages. This probably reflects my crippling fear of rejection that I've had my entire life.

Still am. I can fight them now, but their presence makes me real fucking nervous. Something about their appearance and their idle noise, the strange laughter, it's incredibly unnerving. I commend Adrian Carmack and Sandy Petersen for making a really good monster.

Also, the Cyberdemon was always very imposing, with it's loud roar, and heavy stomping. I was always kind of afraid it'd stomp me or grab me as a kid, even if I knew it couldn't.

I guess it just looks so realistic compared to all the cartoony enemies in the game. There was a compilation of Joust and Defender on the original Game Boy and if you lost your final life in Joust by getting pulled into the lava the game over screen would be the hand sticking out from it. Tried looking for a rom of it on Emuparadise but they only have the Game Boy Color version which doesn't have it so here is a drawing from my memory.
