What's a good usb/pci capture device for older games?

It seems like the market is flooded with cheap, poorly supported devices. What's even more confusing is that there are some that will not work with signals under 480i.

Also, how would you go about splitting the signal, so that one goes to your computer and the other to your TV? I'd like to still play my games on my CRT if possible.

Bump

I'd forgotten how slow this board has become lately.

I'm interested in this myself.

if you have a dvd recorder then you can just use than then rip the dvd later... not perfect but kinda cool. do it with a vcr for ultimate nostalgia

My friend and I use a grassvalley ADVC110 because his school was getting rid of a bunch of them and he snagged one. Has passthrough for RCA and S-video, but it's firewire.

Just use regular Y-cables for RCA splitting. 1 female -> 2 males, three of those if there's stereo auduo.

That's what I've been doing, but the video quality is always awful unless you use the highest quality setting, which will only store 30 minutes of video.

Doesn't that darken the picture, though? I know it does with a composite signal, at least. There has to be some kind of box that can split video signals without much signal loss.

not OP but holy fuck. I'd totally forgotten about that. I added a VCR to my set up just now to see what kind of quality I could get out of it, and it's useable. It's darkened slightly, but that might be because I'm re-using a tape.
How do I get footage from my VCR to my computer?

I haven't noticed any differences in brightness or quality worth mentioning.

With a capture card

Use better cables, or an amplified repeater like they use at Best Buy for all of their TVs running the same program. Analog signal degradation can result in a dimmer picture.

I use a DVD recorder for all my older systems. Like some one said use Y cables. I have all my systems going through automatic AV slectors that go into my DVDrecorder. So all I have to do when wanting to cap game footage is power up the DVDr and hit record.

I like this method over using a cap card because I have all my footage archived on DVDs. I have a note book dedicated to logging the contents of each DVD. I label each disc with a 4 digit code and have a track list. I have a DVD box that stores up to 320 discs in paper sleeves and keep them nice and organized. I've gone back and used that footage many times so it's nice having it on hand, organized and easily accessible if I need it.

I do use an HD Capture card for stuff like Xbox, Wii, 360 and ps3. The files it spits out are huge so after I'm done with the project I delete the raw video files. So if I ever need to revisit things I'll have to re record stuff. Minor hassle but eh.

What DVD recorder is it? And do you have a link to any of your videos by chance?

Unfortunately, the one I have upscales any signals that goes through it, making older games look really ugly, on the CRT at least. On video, it looks like you'd expect... Assuming you have it set to the highest quality recording, which eats up an entire DVD in only 30 minutes. Other settings make it last longer (up to 6 hours), but they all look like shit.
