what are /vr/'s favorite ones? I've really been digging Super Mario Unlimted, it's like SMB1 and SMB3 had a baby. level design is pretty damn sweet and the graphics are better than 95% of official NES games.

You probably should have broadened your scope. Rom hack threads can be kind of sparse, even without being limited to Mario.

Anyway, Extra Mario Bros. is one of my favorite hacks of all time. It's not for the faint of heart, though, since it's as dangerous as The Lost Levels and trickier to navigate than Metroid.

Also I'd like to point out that with Southbird's disassembly and NoDice making an elaborate Super Mario Bros. 3 hack is easier than ever.

Chaos Control for SMB3 is my fav.

it's nothing fancy, it's "just" new levels. However those levels (well most of them at least) are great because they retain the level design feel of SBM3 while being more challenging, but again nothing too hard, just challenging enough. It's really high quality level design and I think it even has a lot of replay value just for that.

For SMB1 ported to the PC Engine. Really interesting romhack. Not done, and likely won't be for years.

SMW has so fucking many hacks because of Lunar Magic. Too bad most of the ones that have a good reputation are "just okay" though I was never a big fan of SMW's floaty physics so I might be a bit biased against SMW hacks.

I kind of wish SMB3 had more good hacks. It had some good editors too, some of which I used myself a bit but never made anything substantial. They weren't user friendly to Lunar Magic's degree though.
