Once again, the weekend hunt for retro vidya has ended, and with that, leftovers have appeared on Craigslist with the resellers hot on our tail.

Pic related, I responded to this ad, but the seller says he started getting emails within 5 minutes of posting.

Let's see some CL finds and rages, /vr/

Sometimes, I like to call the worthless sons-of-whores and arrange to meet them, under the pretense of selling a lot of 50 games.

45 minutes later, I call to tell them I'm not selling shit, and that it's time for them to find a real job. I use my auxiliary burner phone, so the chance of repercussion is exactly zero. Sometimes, I even laugh at them until they hang up.

I encourage everyone, EVERYONE on this board to tell ripoff artists and pig-fucking resellers exactly where they can shove their overpriced wares.

There is one reseller in Edmonton, Canada named Jim Wade. Dude is absolutely insane. He treats people like they're fucking garbage and then when they don't want to buy from him anymore he swears at them, challenges them to fights, and tries to intimidate them. Dude is from Australia or New Zealand or something, but he's fucking nuts. One time I asked him why he was selling MGS collection for $65 and he said he purposely overprices things because he doesn't want to sell them, but he sells games to earn money for his daughter's future. I have an unhealthy obsession with flagging posts, mostly phone unlockers and pirates who insist on posting a dozen times a day. Used to be I could get it to where it took one click to take down posts; I'm in a medium market, so I guess the flags threshold wasn't too high. These days I'm not as successful.
Plus CL changed things somewhat such that I can't automate the process any more. Before I could grab the HTML, run a few searches and filters to generate flagging URLs, then do a wget on the result. Things changed enough that I'm too dumb to figure out a way to do it again. So I'm back to clicking on them individually. Whenever I visit a coffee shop, work, home, etc, I'll waste 10-20 minutes just flagging posts.

>> No.1225535

Here's what you do to ruin a reseller who's attitude you don't like. Anytime you see an ad where someone is buying games, send him a picture of some of your games. Take about ten off your shelves and throw them in a box like they're junk. The best is 9 average games and one real gem you know is worth $50+. Take a shitty cell phone picture and send it to him asking for an offer. He'll send an offer of like $20 for everything. If he insists on asking what YOU want, use eBay completed auctions or priceguide to come up with the lowest fair value there is, maybe even 10-20% under and see if he tells you that's way too high. If he ever seems even slightly suspicious just stop emailing, his greed will drive him crazy.

Ideally, you'll get him excited about ripping you off then you arrange to meet him somewhere and just don't show. Send him to the worst neighborhood in town and tell him to wait in the car, or even send him to a random address. Then, email him asking where he was. Pretend there was some miscommunication and see how many times you can get him to do it. If everybody starts doing this, and doing it multiple times with slight variations in MO we might be able to take a bite out of them.

My two cousins and I (all retro gamers of course) have the Craigslist Collection Challenge. This is where you post your entire collection for sale on CL and the person with the highest offer wins. Last time I won, with a $50 offer for my SNES collection of 100+ games, console, accessories, etc.

So, I arranged to meet the guy at Taco Bell. Go with my cousins and arrive early. Identify the asshole by texting him. Enjoy our food while watching him squirm.

There's this place called Raven's in the city I live, (Winnipeg) that sells retro games at insane prices.

Like... Sometimes theres great deals like Super Mario Kart or Sonic 2 for 5$...

But then they charge 75$ for Super Mario RPG and 40$ for Link to the past, both cart only.

And since I live in Canadian Siberia, ebay is almost entirely pointless, due to the extreme cost of shipping. Add to this a very weak resale community, and I am left at the mercy of their craziness.

Depends, how much do you want for it, and how much effort are you willing to put into selling it? A game shop is there to sell games, so you have to be fucking crazy if you expect them to pay the $60-90 the other anon noted the game usually sells for.

You can try selling it yourself on CL or eBay for say a conservative $60, that's 30 more than that shop will buy it for. Is the extra money worth the time spent listing and driving out to meet a buyer or to the post office? Though if the game is a hot seller, you could minimize things to just your entire sale post being just "N64 Conker's Bad Fur Day for sale."

But why aren't you playing it? Aren't you yourself also now reseller scum? You paid $3 for the game and now expect top dollar for it.

I thought about making a YouTube channel where I call people who want crazy amounts for their retro vidya and ask them how they came to that price, ect. I wouldn't yell or anything and try not to make fun of them, just get in their head a bit.

Saw a post a while back that was good if they actually did it. He would post a list of games on Craigslist and throw in a random gem like Bubble Bobble 2. When someone who was an obvious reseller replied he would get their address. When another reseller would reply he would give them the address of the first one. Would love to hear the conversation when they found out they'd been duped.

eh, your call, it's a pretty damn good deal, so it might be worth it to make the trip for that SFC anyways. Also the warranty sticker is on the bottom of the PS2, if you were to stand it up vertically. If you see a bunch of "VOID" going through the sticker, the PS2's been opened and a modchip has been installed.

>> No.1229714

I don't see the sticker anywhere on the case, appears to be some sticker residue just below the AV out and power input.

Is there any real difference between a soft-modded and hard-modded PS2? I was considering trading this for a modded PS1 because to my knowledge soft-modded systems can't play PS1 games that are burnt to disc

>> No.1229719

>>1229714
soft mods (like FreeMCBoot) require a memory card or HDD. Modchips do not. Soft mod allows you to load up games off the HDD.

>> No.1229728

>>1229719

So neither can run PS1 games, and neither has a particular advantage over the other? Why would someone choose to mod instead of soft-mod, is it just because of the fact that modchips came first?

>> No.1229729

>>1229714

Soft mods don't fuck with the hardware. I have Free McBoot on my PS2. Without the memory card, it's just a normal PS2.

Now if it can play burnt PS1 games, that much I do not know. I usually just emulate those since my PC can take it.

>> No.1229732

>>1229728
pretty sure soft mods let you load off PSX games off the internal HDD, though I have yet to try it. As for modchips, yeah, they've been around the longest, and some people just prefer them to their simplicity.

One I gave up on were chinese scam sites that would 90% of the time flood the cell phone listings. They'd point to websites with names like "brightdeal" or "shiningsale" They were easy to spot in the listings, but no easy search term since the website would keep changing.

This reminds me of when I would fuck with price lists on wikis for some online games to fuck people over. Make them hand over good shit for 10% of the currency of the realm and mark things up a fuckton. They go to check the price, and they see they're getting 'a good deal'.

>> No.1232104

>> No.1232110

>>1232104
Because an official guide would require an authoritative body who can dictate what is basically a second-hand market. Even an unofficial guide would be impossible as it's based purely on supply and demand.

>> No.1232121

>>1232110

It happened with comic books, and it can happen with video games. The efficacy of the price guide would hinge solely on the credibility of the publisher.

In such a model, no dictatorship would be necessary. Buyers could make informed decisions, and sellers would have a frame of reference for their pricing, one more effective than, "Well, this is what a handful of wealthy jerk-offs on eBay are willing to pay, so this is the price everyone pays!"

>> No.1232124

>>1232121
Why would I sell something for some price in a book if I could sell it for more to some wealthy jerk-off?

>> No.1232139

>>1232124

Sure. But not everyone thinks like that. And not everyone is willing to pay for overpriced merchandise. And, when somebody accuses you of overpricing, they would have an official source to back their claim.

>> No.1232151

>>1232139

Adding to that, even with an officially-recognized reference, there's nothing that stops you from price gouging. However, with said reference, the likelihood of anybody buying your wares drops significantly.
