I liked limited randomness in hunting minigames. While fish runs into random direction at random time with chance to instantly break the thread, animals run into random direction too but once you scared it it runs accordingly to AI: mostly where it faced untill some range or wall was reached. Some determination is always better.

I quite sure ryusui knows Japanese, but he really unserstands the difference between translation and localisation and he pulled it off very well. Okay, he lines a few things up with BOF3 that might stick out a bit and I much prefer "Katt" over "Lin", but he did a great job with it. Katt actually seems a bit thick this time around; Sten is a much more eloquent womaniser; Melodia's (Tunland) princess whinges like the bitch she is and item names actually come through in full.

I was quite impressed with it when I played the retranslation. It's a lot more than the mostly generic JRPG that the first one was. I even shed some tears at some parts.

Pretty good game and easily my favorite of the series since I've replayed it. The grinding and encounter rate is insane though, it could do with a rebalancing.

I populated all houses with happy merchants and a banker on my first playthrough. Then i understood everyone except fish trader, some other ingredient trader and maybe castable weapon trader are useless. the good: dragon system is ok, karn's fusions are nice, locations are nice, fishing is a nice touch.

the bad: generic story, generic characters, little to no directions of where to go, ryu's dragons are mere palette swaps and overpowered, karn's fusions are overpowered, bleu is overpowered, nina is too good.

so basically it is an unmemorable game where your party is ridiculously overpowered but will spend hours trying to figure out where the fuck you are supposed to go. its playable but dont expect much.

the good: good story, probably the best character in the series: ershin, ryu/fou-lu duality is a nice improvement over the past ones, faerie town is better, master system is improved, ershin, pacing is tight, learning enemy skills is improved, ershin.

the bad: dragon system is nerfed, fishing is nerfed, hunting is annoying, no overworld whatsoever is a real bummer

between a nice cast, a likeable antagonist, improved gameplay over bof3 and good storytelling, this is easily the best entry in the series (some will say it is bof3, but is probably pretty close anyway).

Ok so I think I know why I had such a bad experience playing this game after reading through this thread. I had no idea what "Shamans" were or how to use them. I had no idea how to play these hunting and fishing mini games, I just kept running in circles trying to catch the animals and they would run away. I didn't know what my home base was for except for holding my other party members, but from what people are saying you could have a cook or item crafter in your house? I vaguely remember this but didn't want to waste my items combining them together.

But still with all of that the main reasons I didn't like the game were the high random encounter rate and the lack of overworld fast travel as well as needing to find a shrine to swap my party members.

Maybe I'll give it another go in a couple years

to be fair you did have (limited) overworld transportation:

rand's overworld action was curling into a ball, allowing for faster travel without random battles. on the flip side, if you crash into something you stop and have like 99% chance of triggering a battle.

jean would turn into a giant frog for more or less the same speed but much reduced encounter rate and the ability to hop over certain cliffs and fences.

the whale is fast but still triggers random battles and is only found midgame. locations where you have access to it are limited.

the great bird is only accessible after 2/3 of the game and becomes unavaiable shortly before the last chapter but it is the fastest way to travel and doesn't trigger random battles.

ah let's see. slow pacing: game just felt too slow, stuff seemed to drag on and on. forgettable music: most of it is ok but a few of them were just terrible. i.e. the cave music and the battle music. dialogue was cringe-worthy from what i remember. some plot elements were retarded like the transition from child to adult which, according to my notes, happened out of nowhere with no explanation whatsoever. screen faded out and faded in and just like that several years passed. also how half the game is spent looking for a boat.

but what ultimately made me dislike the game were the terrible main characters.

rei is annoying. "doesn't that beat all". what kind of catchphrase is that? grinded my gears everytime he said it.

nina is a whinny bitch and just annoying in general. sucks how useless she is in battle too.

garr had that holier-than-thou attitude but was bearable.

ryu started as a irritating crybaby but got better as the game advanced.

peco was cool actually. i liked the way you could rack up master skills easily with him and shape him to patch any hole you might have in your party.

now momo. i don't remember hating a main character more than i hated momo. she started promising but soon let me down with her terrible accuracy. she felt like a bad ryu with a few more spells. didn't help that the game forded me to use her from time to time. didn't help that she did dumb shit all the time when she was supposed to be a genius. case in point: shooting the black ship with her bazooka and, when that obviously failed, ramming it from behind. fuck you momo.

Ryu reverts to a wild state and returns to the mine he was found in. Picking up the best Nina is like picking best of worst character in respective game. But question is question and i'll go with Nina2. At least she was quite usable party member and her deadly silence for 3/4 of the game played better for her just to stay in my party than her terrible speeches and actions. Seems like Capcom didn't find another way to make her likeble to this moment and later in BoF3 they tryharded by making her paroding a generic princess and failed miserably again. She goes full marry sue only to harm her relatives and party's morale. She is shy and insecure piece of shit who won't fight her weaknesses for a minute even when the party is in critical danger. Nina2 is dressed like a powerful woman but doesn't act accordingly. But even here in female beauty contest she loses to Katt with removed personality.

The 3rd game was the best for me, but the bad thing about the game is the story.
The world was pretty cool, the characters were fine, but the end of the game was too fast, the final boss isn't ever met before the end of the game.
Also the leveling in the game was pretty bad if i remember.
Also the master system was stupid, nobody know without looking on Internet what each master will teach you, and what they will change to you when you level up.


I just want to talk about Dragon Quarter, it was a bad game for me, but the idea of not using the "dragon form" was a good idea for me.
It would be good if it was only a difficulty option you can choose.

Too bad they won't release another good game for this serie.
They just have to take everything that was cool on the former games and bring them together in one good game with cool design!
Dragon form & world map from BoF3, story from BoF4, Characters design & shaman from BoF2. Just add a dynamic battle system like old Final fantasy (< 10) games or star ocean, and it would be perfect.

What? I dont understand what you're talking about. It's very simple RPG level mechanics. You all share from the enemies exp pool, every time you level up, you receive a preset amount of stats for that level which is subject to change depending on who you're apprenticed under. The skill monopolize can be given to train just one character alone, stealing all the enemies exp for themselves. What are you even TALKING about?

in bof2 there is lack of full AP restore items. You can find a way to cook them only with a guide or on guinness record occasions. Ryu is fucked. Devs hid his 512/100% AP dragons like crazy. Developers liked this IT ISN'T THAT TIME YET concept so much it has become default for BoF3. But BoF3 didn't strike me as much as Tiga scene maybe scene with horsefuckers and Ryu which portended casual humor at first sight and then they stabbed him in the back like it's fucking nothing. Tiga is such a fag; in the very end he would do it with two ladies: with Katt for the sole purpose of procreation where he still forced her to be with him all the time; and with Claire. I believe Katt's free will wouldn't allow her to deal with him for a long time; she just stayed because her kind and appreciating nature. He thought Katt as child-bearer would be safe this way yet later he would just switch Katt's and Claire's places. Chances are that (like most games with guaranteed-to-lose battles) the game has no alternative scenario data. So even if you win the game will act like you lost.

You'd have to add code to the ROM to do it properly, which makes it a significantly more complicated job, one most hackers skilled in SNES programming probably don't care enough about to do.

I really liked Breath of Fire 2, but it felt really unfinished sometimes. The shoddy translation helped with that, but even without it there seemed like there was a lot of stuff that was left undone. I spent many hours when the game first came out trying to figure out how to have some kind of conclusion to the shadow thief Patty plotline after she gets bounced off into the forest in front of the final dungeon entrance.

I also really liked the art for the fake dating game that this artist did. I remember there being a lot of stuff but the last time I checked years ago it hadn't changed much.

This was actually the game that taught me english. Played and finished it a year before I had english in school and by the end I understood most of what happened ingame. This was back when the game was released, mind you, so no gamefaqs or online walkthroughs. So y'all played bof2 on snes when it came out, right? I didn't. NOT RETRO I played it for the first time on emulator in 2013. I wasn't into JRPGs at all before i tried Trigger in 2012. First i thought Trigger is the best of its kind; but first impressions wouldn't make me a diehard fanatic when i am mature. I perfectly see downsides of CT. CT's gameplay is straight forward. It's 99.9% typical JPRG gameplay So where are the downsides, faget?. As i wasn't into JRPGs before, a mix is required. It's boring to do the same shit over and over again. Active time didn't help me - game too easy. IMO BoF2 splits its gameplay into minigames and JRPGan. Hunting and fishing with such mechanics in 1993? GOAT. BoF2 is HARD. You gonna die a lot, bitch. Switching formations while battling? So you can have
1 - Ryu
2 - Katt
3 - Sten
4 - anybody
put them 'scramble', make sten use 'rip'; deal tons of damage without fear (almost) of enemy hitting you (except if it got CtrAttk); and switch, at example, to 'defence', when you want Sten to cast spells. Let alone switching to defence formations when low hp, using 'defend' and making other party member heal you. Such tactics so deep holly molly @ 1993. Ryu and Katt with CtrAttk in top 2 spots are primary targets so they clear mobs like np. Literally a cool game; probably it is translation fault it isn't received as it should. That fanfictioner did a good job to increse interest to this game though i don't like the way he made re-translation.I didn't play it LOL

Eh, I actually tried everything I could to make that possible the last time I messed with the game, but just having him in the overworld party formation is enough to crash the game every time there's a cutscene. Also, he can't be put in a party that's not KidRyu/YoungRei or the game will also crash.
The best you can do is use the walk-through-walls code to bypass the scenes where he leaves and keep your initial Ryu-Rei-Teepo party.

Each "real" portion of the overworld is separated by a dungeon you have to enter, and then leave from the other side.
In the first portion, you need to enter that mountain where Ryu is kidnapped by Balio & Sunder and exit to the side Wyndia is.

The cook is the most broken of the three carpenters. You can make unlimited stat boosting items, gold bars to sell, valuable consumables...

As to residents, I usually go with:
House 1: Hekeller (not particularly amazing but everyone else is useless)
2: Fishing spot guy
3: Hunting spot guy or Baretta
4: Barose
5: Hanz
6: Daiye

It's pretty dated. I mean, for the time it was released, it was great due to the better graphics and music the SNES offered. But take all that away and you'll find it's just your average archaic JRPG, having more in common with something on the NES than with later 16-bit titles like Chrono Trigger.

BoF2 on the other hand, while not being anything spectacular, is a very fun game in its own right and the best you could ask for when it comes to vanilla JRPGs on the SNES - generic while containing a lovable and endearing feel that'll pull you along.

I like BoF a lot, but I feel it's "too much quest, not enough story," if that makes any sense. I like the characters, I like the world, but it's just really hard to stay interested in playing it. Too much of the game is just traveling to places where the Dark Dragons are dicking people over and fixing it, and then maybe somebody from that place decides to join you and help you do the same thing in the next place. DQ is an awesome game, and really well-designed. It requires thinking and strategy to do well (much more than any other BoF).

It's not THAT much of a BoF, though. I mean, it's good, but a lot of the hate I feel stems from the fact it was an entirely separate game that ended up being shoehorned into the series, so it doesn't have the same feel to it, but it's great in its own right.

Try to enjoy it for what it is, without worrying about it being a BoF or not. If you like a bit of challenge, it should be perfect. And remember, having to give up and go back to the beginning of the game is NOT necessarily a bad thing in DQ! The game is designed for that to happen, and you'll reach the spot you reset at much faster the next time.
