What's your thoughts on this UNTAPPED source of gaming?

I really really want to talk to you /vr/ about this shit.

There are so many games on PC-98 and other Japanese pc's that have been rarely archived.

Some games not even obtainable unless you go to taiwanese/chinese emulation sites.

I've delved into it and it's a sad state.

http://www.pc98.org/main.html

The only american site dedicated to it. You can find some other stuff on it elsewhere as well.

I am bringing this up because of an old project I started Sadly I lost the files due to a system restore one day.

Here is that chinese site called
http://www.emu999.net/

It has an insane amount of pc98 stuff.

Are two old interesting Gundam strategy games.

There are also a ton of eroges.

I don't know what I might want to look for but my old project was trying to collect a massive mecha library of games for /m/ and as I stated Iost it and I'm not doing it again.

What's the point in playing these if they're in Japanese? How many of you guys know Japanese well enough to get through the typical wall of kanji in these things? What's the point in playing an RPG if you don't understand what the hell's going on?

"The main English source for anything to do with Japanese computers is the Tokugawa forums, which I visited for information. Another reason for lack of downloads, as one insider reluctantly told me, is that about a decade ago, prior to Tokugawa's formation, there had been a collaboration between East and West to dump and share Japan's retro computer games. I have a small list... but most of the games I know require japanese knowledge to some extent. Also some of them have enhanced ports in other plattforms, so sometimes is just better to play the enhanced port (even if they have censored stuff).

>Doukyuusei 1 and 2 (there are multiple versions for this games, some of them are not retro)
>Kakkyusei (similar to Doukyuusei)
>Yu-No (just play the translated version with all the extra content)
>Dragon Knight series (the first three games have remakes in PC Engine CD, then the fourth game was remade for almost every plattform and it even had a PC 3D remake in 2007).
>Genei Toshi (this one also has many versions, I cant remember which were the best versions, but IIRC they were the X68000 and MSX2 versions).
>Dead of the Brain I & II (the first game had multiple releases on many computers, but the second game was only released on PC-98, there is also a PC Engine remake with voice acting that includes both games).
>Policenauts (the PC-98 version is kinda awkward since it doesnt have subtitles unless you finnished the game once)
>Isaku (this game was ported later to PC and spawned multiple sequels)
>Gunblaze (turn based RPG in a steampunk setting, there is a remake for Sega Saturn).

Will post more later.

DOSbox includes parts of the interface in the shell like mounting new drives.

Speed can be something to worry about. I usually use 20 MHz but occasionally it needs to be ramped up to 80 or cut down to 4.

That game is part of the Ghost Hunter Series games. You can say it's kinda like the japanese Call of Cthulhu (pen and paper RPG). Three games were released on that series: Laplace no Ma (the SNES version has a translation patch), Paracelsus no Maken (PC-98 only) and the third game Kuroki Shi no Kamen that was only released on 3DO.

So basically you agree and go further by explaining to the original person that there's more than one viable configuration making him even more wrong.
Unless a PC-98x isn't a PC-98x.

Basically it's as wrong as saying DOS games have shitty scrolling because some early dos games did have shitty scrolling. Yet it's entirely missing the point that there were plenty that did. Given that the PC-98 series were more or less just NEC x86 machines with somewhat different architecture design for motherboards that's pretty a fairly proper analogy since they also supported DOS. Mind you he didn't even mention a specific version like the original PC-9801 though he said 'the system' as if PC-98 was one system instead of a line like IBM 5XXX etc...

Mind you it's a similar situation with DOS developers not having inbuilt scrolling with the hardware and the whole bit about Carmack developing Keen to scroll smoothly (it's not actually all that smooth). I discovered that the DiskExplorer software isn't too crazy about long file names or something because it didn't work until I moved the files from my external hard drive, in a long named directory to a simple directory on my c: - just a note there to help my bros.

The HD0 image that I edited didn't have an extension so NP2 didn't see it. I just renamed it to have a THD extension. I loaded it and reset and it booted and now it's just at a black screen (not the japanese text screen, which I guess is a "load an image" screen or something). There's no prompt so I assume my disk image either didn't load or doesn't have an OS on it...

So where do I get an image of a PC98 hard drive with DOS or whatever on it for me to start with?

Once I have a 512 megabyte bootable hard drive image I should be able to stuff it (or them) full of games and write some batch files to serve as a front end.

It would make getting into these games much easier for noobs (download 512 meg worth at a time, load hard drive in emulator and reset) so can anyone just make one for me or point me in the direction of one that already exists somewhere?

This intentionally cryptic shit is why your scene is dying. I don't know what magical fucking search phrase other than "pc98 dos install tutorial" or "dos/v install tutorial" is going to get me this supposed tutorial you're too cool to link me directly to on the first page but in searching these forums it's pretty clear nobody has been doing much with pc98 for many years. There are links to pre-formatted HD images which, despite being only 40 meg, I might have been able to copy the dos files out of using Disk Manager if they weren't so old that all eight of the links (including megaupload) are dead.

I'm beginning to think that all any English speakers know how to do at this point is load self booting disk images long enough to jerk off which maybe is a fitting end for the pc98 scene.

>> No.1262336

>>1262235
What do you even want with DOS/V? Those are IBM compatibles with Japanese language support.

You are trying to skip too many steps. Take the fucking tutorial on how to create a 40 MB bootable HDD. Follow each step carefully through so that you can learn how the thing works.

Don't try to come across as the super expert wanting to help beginners when you're just a beginner yourself.
I hadn't bothered with creating a bootable image until now but I managed to do it by following the instructions. Then I used that knowledge to repeat it for a 512 MB image.
I'm not going to upload it because that would be a huge waste of resources.

WHAT FUCKING TUTORIAL? If I could find anything that just translates the formatting menus of the DOS 6.2 disks I already have that would be enough.

I am an expert with DOS. The emulators are pretty straight forward with creating and mounting virtual disks. The file manager makes it easy to manipulate the files and move them back and forth between the virtual disks and the directory structures look the same as DOS ones.

It is just frustrating that the format menu is different and in Japanese. it's maddening that, by this point it would have been easier to just feed screen shots into Google's image translator than to pry a simple link out of you people who are supposedly trying to grow your scene.

The emulator only loads up disk images and it didn't take long to discover that many of the games in the archives are not in disk image format. Essentially what I'm trying to do is turn more of them into games that will run easily in the emulator. The game CRW that was recommended to me ITT is the reason for this as neither archives have the first one (there are two) in disk image format and the links I found online only had the install disks.

Of course, with no more help than the scenesters gave me I'll probably just do it and play CRW long enough to get tired of it and drop the whole project - although a far better thing to do would be to distribute tons of easy-porn packages all over the place and draw tons of dumbasses into their scene.

Alright! Again, sorry about not checking your links last night but now I've successfully got a bootable hard drive image. What I was overlooking is some option right before formatting that you have to use the second choice. I still have no idea what it does, it isn't to flag the drive as bootable because that's on another menu I already figured out. Pic related.

Also, you have to reboot after formatting for the virtual bios to detect the new formatted, partitioned hard drive.

Interestingly, when there are no floppies inserted the hard drive becomes A:. which surprised me especially since it was C: when there was just one floppy inserted.

I may still end up having to manually copy things like himem.sys if such things are necessary for games to run and I don't know if it needs environmental switches set in config.sys but I'll cross those bridges when I come to them.

Idiots like you coming along and labeling it like this is why the scene is dying. People only put effort into the community when it feels niche, when some chad like yourself comes along and tries to "bring it to the masses" interest immediately dies around you. Also if your going to spend any time on the internet it's worth learning google, "pc98 dos install .hdi" is an extremely simple search to put together that requires just a moment of reflection on what you are actually looking for. That's what I hate about chads the most, they never think and they never put any actual effort into anything online. Even the two searches you provided yourself bring up tutorials if you would have just clicked through the first through results.

Also nobody in this "scene" is going to be goaded with that last line, only works on other normies.

Okay believe it or not I'm still working on straightening up this archive up for western audiences. I've decided to just start going through and looking for the games that aren't in a disk image format of some kind of another and turning them into that then if I get that finished I may go back through and rename everything to English.

Right now, I'm getting a lot of errors back from WinRAR probably because the filenames aren't always 100% windows compliant. That kind of sucks because it might break the game to have it modified but at the same time I don't want to put all these rars into a virtual drive and use the PC-98 rar app to extract them because most of them ARE in disk image format and that would be hugely inefficient but it may have to be done to keep all the filenames correct.

These archives have lots of games in them that aren't mentioned on any english language boards so there's probably some gems unknown in the west.

The Mega-CD version is the one that's radically different from the rest. It was developed by SEGA Falcom, which was a joint venture between Sega and Falcom that developed a game called Sister Sonic, a heavily altered port of Popful Mail with Sonic characters. Fan pressure caused them to change it back to Popful Mail characters, however the difficulty and general gameplay style from Sister Sonic were retained in the Mega-CD version of Popful Mail.

There is, it's called Gaijinworks. Started by Victor Ireland the same guy who spearheaded Working Designs back in the day.

Sure, the idea of localizing Japanese games and releasing them in special-edition releases is nice, but you can't get by with shoddy translation work and horrible voice acting forever.

What? MKR came out in the US in 1998, the Saturn was on death's door by then.

>Ys V isn't exactly gonna be on the shelf in SNES cartridge format at Walmart this Christmas.

Why would it be? Walmart doesn't sell SNES cartridges anymore. Even if Working Designs was still around it wouldn't be. After all, Working Designs wasn't the best at selling alot of copies of games anyway. Most of their releases were rather anemic for lack of a better word.

I've used Paint Tool SAI and Manga Studio 5- Manga Studio 5 is slightly better. Just removing anti-aliasing helps a lot. Manga Studio has a handy feature with the airbrush that lets you spray little aliased dots. This lets you imitate the dithered look, but it will take some practice.

Unfortunately there's no easy way to emulate the look, but you can get pretty close. I've attached an example of what it looks like to this post. I probably could have done better given more time and practice, but it at least shows how things go.

Sure, there were western games with sex and lewdity(lewdness?) in it, but I can't think of any with explicit rape, or rather, where you play as a rapist. Anyone know of any? Not that I have a need or anything to put myself in a rapists shoes; I am just genuinely curious if anyone had the audacity to release such a game, especially during the 80's and 90's. 640x200 with black lines or line doubling is characteristic for the PC-88. The PC-98 had a similar mode but it wasn't used as much beyond PC-88 ports.
As a rule of thumb, PC-88 games from around 1990 have the best pixel art.

I think trying to use a such pic as model with so many detail isn't optimal for PC98 artstyle.

Thank you! I'm already finding loads of kick ass art.

>>1274912
I don't think the image is the problem. I think it has to do with experience and knowledge. If you keep making and analyzing PC-88 or 98 stuff you will eventually get better.

I'm not an expert, but I think you should fix the jagged lines and finish the outlines before adding colour. And when you do add colour remember to optimize your palette and use gradients to transition between colours.

To get the same result as PC-9801 arts, you need to work in tha same condition as the PC-9801 artists, that means: with a limited palette, with similar tools (softwares like Deluxe paint, stuff like that), at the same resolution. When I was only making gfx on PC, I sucked at pixel art, but now that I use an Amiga for this kind of stuff, it's easier to make good retro-looking graphics.

Version of what? DOSBox or Deluxe Paint? Latest DOSBox I guess. I'm using Deluxe Paint II Enhanced, don't know anything about the other versions.

By the way, you could check out GrafX2 if you haven't already. A lot of pixel artists use that program. It's sort of a free Deluxe Paint for modern computers. But I personally think it's a bit tricky to get used to and I'm not sure it beats Deluxe Paint when it comes to sweet ass gradients.

Tug of War by Zainsoft
This game has potential, I just need to work out how to properly play it.
It's a tug of war game with a fantasy storyline and some management parts.

I still think we can do some good stuff with Photoshop. See, If we just use some 3 colors dithers made by Deluxe paint II, and use it as pattern in Photoshop...
