Sony should have made Crash Bandicoot their official mascot and made sure the games were still quality.

CB was a very popular game in the 90s, all over the world. It was comparable to Sonic and Mario.

From what I know a big reason Naughty Dog left was because Sony fucked them over so they were pretty much forced to quit unless they wanted to be screwed over some more.

I never cared for Crash too much, I always found the game-play uninspired and very repetitive. I never really found the "collect everything" style of game appealing. Especially now that is EXACTLY how children's games are made today. I did like Spyro year of the dragonfly for some reason or another... and I do recall playing the other ones, but not getting involved with them however.

What do you mean Naughty Dog left? You mean why they ditched Universal? It totally made sense though, the only role Universal had was pretty much funding the first Crash Bandicoot, they were pretty much a middle man after that just making money off it with no effort. Naughty Dog either had to stay under a publishers control or give up Crash, and unfortunately, leaving Crash was the right move.

I hope the rumors are true though that Sony bought him back, I know in a few interviews Andy and Jason said theyd have interest in making a new Crash game and Andy specifically has a whole prequel thought out.

God thinking about that though literally makes me drool, I loved Crash so much.

Today definitely not, but back in the day he was definitely as recognizable. To put it in perspective, Crash 1 sold 3.7 million games the year of its launch, at the time 74 million games were sold in 1996 which gave crash a 5% market share. Cod Black Ops in 2010 sold 12 million in its first year, but 200 million games were sold, a 6% market share. I'm not saying Crash was as big as Call of Duty is now, but a 5% market share for one title is pretty big for it to not be one of the most recognizable characters at the time.

For me Parappa the Rapper suits better the role of Playstation's mascot even if he only had two games where he was the main star (he was also playable at UM Jammer Lammy after finishing the main game). Althought I Parappa the Rapper 2 was mediocre and a huge letdown for a sequel. I wish they would make a third Parappa the Rapper game but making it good. Or at least a new rthythm game in the same universe.

Rhythm games have been done to death though and while they did fantastic in Japan, Parappa and Lammy only did slightly below average in North America (according to the G4 Icons episode "Music Games)

But that might have been because it was a radically new genre of the time and people weren't sure what to make of it. Who knows, maybe a new game in the franchise could sell really well?

It's really hard to predict what the market wants these days, besides COD clones.

Halo and GTA 3 came, and put the bullet in the head of mascot platformers that weren't Mario or Sonic. 4th/5th gen was loaded with them, but only a few of them had staying power. Some even came into existence in the 6th gen, like Ty, but even then the market was largely limited to the old stand-bys.

Mascot Platformers suited the 4th and 5th console gens perfectly because they were very visually appealing games, which was good for the relatively limited hardware. Companies rushed to have their own piece of the pie. It wasn't uncommon to see older gamers playing them, too. It was only in late in the 5th gen when they started to be looked upon as mostly kid's stuff. And like I said, GTA 3 and Halo launched a wave that totally shifted what casual older audiences wanted.

Crash in today's world would probably be what it devolved into being: a game series for kids, ignored by older audiences. Same thing that happened to Spyro in order to keep that franchise afloat. Even if ND did get a stab at it again, Sony would probably just treat it as a token kid's game.

These games are just there to be a bone to toss to kids, at least in the view of companies. They know kids now are largely playing adult's games like GTA 5 and CoD, regardless of content. But obviously, they can't market that fact. So they have some games for smaller kids, even though most of them will just play the old stand-bys like Sonic if they do play those types of games.
