How do you all hold your N64 controllers? I don't believe there's a right or wrong way of doing so, but I've been told I hold it a little strangely.

General discussion on controller holding and maneuvering is welcome too.

A more important question: how do you wrap up the cords on your N64 controller?

This is how I always did it.

I can't believe someone thought having a third of the controller hanging out in space 90% of the time with one of the shoulder buttons inaccessible was a good design. Seriously the worst controller on a non-marginal console.

I don't understand why so many people have a problem with the N64 controller. No halfway decent game requires both the d-pad AND the analog stick, or both the L AND Z buttons. Hold it like >>1216895, pretend the left handle isn't there and it works just fine for 99% of the game. The left handle is superfluous and unnecessary, sure, but that's not worth throwing a bitchfit over.

Seriously how do so many people have trouble with it? It's not rocket science.

This. The controller isn't hard to hold or uncomfortable to use. But there's no denying that the design is awful. I couldn't imagine being a developer and having to make a game with it in mind.

Most SNES-era 3rd party devs supported the N64, especially non-Japanese ones.

>> No.1224560

Anyone who says the N64 controller is bad design is either a troll, a tryhard, or lying. Seriously, the analog stick and what it did for gameplay completely overshadowed all of these fake troll posts. No one was looking at the fucking controller and barely any games had bad enough design to utilize the dpad and analog stick at the same time. I can't even remember one game that REQUIRED dpad usage. But everything you could have needed was there on the controller. It's not nintendo's fault if Duke Nukem had shitty designers that came up with a bad control scheme. If they hadn't included the DPad people would be knocking them for their hubris. I think the controller trolls don't realize that the Dual Shock and the Xbox controller didn't come out until after the N64 controller. PS1 didn't have analog controls for 3D games. Do you realize how retarded that is? Hi, I can't walk diagonally.

I think people looking backwards at controllers think that the pad format that NES, SNES, Genesis, and Early PS1 controllers used were an inevitability, but I think the point of th eN64 controller was to allow the controller to evolve how it needed to evolve. Oh my god I need a book on video game controller history now to satisfy my curiosity about controller development.

Third party support is what lead the Playstation to take over Nintendo's home market, and continues to keep the Playstation brand relevant. Even if Sony was loosing literally billions per console sold, it wouldn't fail because third parties have too much faith into it, and will do their damndest to keep them from going back to Nintendo. Konami is especially resentful of Nintendo.

Anon's talking about all the 3-D games that came out before the Dual Analog (or neGcon for that matter).

Saturn and PS didn't have analog sticks until after the N54 analog controller came out, so there was quite a long period when they both had 3-D games that were controlled using D-pads.

holy fucking shit i thought i was the only person who thought that. The N64 suffers from what i like to call "nintendo syndrome" what you will notice about the N64 is that the mast majority of 3rd party games are shit either that or their price is outrageously expensive for extremely common games. And the 1st and 2nd party games although which are all mediocre at best (when i said this i am taking the zelda games into account so dont come back with the usual "well what about zelda" because lets face it that game isnt that good its just another action game with boring gameplay and lackluster story line the only good thing about that game is the music ) and extremely common cost to much Just look at mario 64 for example that is $25.00 right now and its not even that good.
