Pressing the alternate direction to come back to the middle from a dodge makes you move faster.

Example. Dodge to the left, and then press right to get back to the middle. You move faster than just letting yourself bounce back.

Well then, you just have to get good.
I'm not saying this to be an ass, but you probably just have to practice. Make good use of the dodging trick mentioned earlier, and get a USB controller if you haven't already. Don't change the fps either, 60 is the original. Punch Out honestly is a difficult game at first; as you play it more you start to realize it' s just a test of reflexes.

Mike Tyson is pretty much a one trick pony. His pattern is very easy to figure out. You just gotta have very good reflexes. Mr. Sandman, on the other hand, can be a nightmare to figure out.

There is a quick knockdown trick for him.

Counter his first 2 hooks via punches to the face, then crouch and tap down, Soda will go down to toss an uppercut he'll delay it(this can be random sometimes, just keep trying), when you see he's delayed, punch him the stomach, you'll get a star, dodge his next uppercut, or punch him right away after your start to cancel it, then immediately use your star, this will knockdown him from full health.

Repeat 3 times and you win.

Do what >>1216595 says. Also he'll use his Dreamland Express uppercuts at 1:30 in round 1, and he'll use it whenever either of you get up from a knockdown in round 2 and 3. Make sure you dodge to the left to get away, going to the right won't work.

He'll pause for a long while. After realizing he's about to do it it's just a matter of dodging them in succession with the right timing. Popinski's three-jabs-in-a-row works the same way; you just get less notice with Sandman.

key in this game is look at the face of the bad guy and breathe while you play. most if not all (and the drunk russian "soda" does it too) telegraph their attacks with facial expressions.

It's no joke. This game requires a reaction speed of less than a quarter of a second by the end.

If you have a TV that's introducing 100ms or more input lag, it's physically impossible for any human being to react fast enough to finish the game.
