Can we get a .gbs thread up in this place? Gameboy Color is obviously also welcome.

Turns out to have quite a lot of options. About 8 backdrops, 40 preset color schemes, and you can make a custom color scheme too, it has quite a few colors, and each color has 7 'intensities' (the bar on the left).

Better music than in the original due to the instrumentation.

Capcom couldn't into 16-bit when it came to the arrangement (not the composition) of the music, unlike Konami.

These are pretty neat. Why does it look so good on my CRT? Is it because of the way CRTs handle up-scaling?

>> No.1220715

>>1220650
No, why would it? Look at the fuck-huge borders on the pics above, it's clearly 576i. I don't think any cartridge can force a SNES to change video mode, AFAIK the PAL console can only output 60 Hz with modification.

But apparently the SGB plays games at the correct speed (well 2.4% faster like all SGBs due to using the SNES clock source) on a PAL SNES, but somehow outputs at 50 fps - this must involve either some jerky-ass framerate conversion (or just skipping every few frames) or weird timing trickery like how PAL Famiclones play NTSC games at PAL speeds.

Whatever way it does it, it's still 576i50.

>> No.1220719

I meant "PAL Famiclones play NTSC at NTSC speeds but outputting PAL video"

>> No.1220725

>force a SNES to change video mode
Wait, you think the PAL SNES is designed entirely around outputting 50hz? You can play an NTSC game in 60hz on a PAL machine just fine, I'm playing F-Zero right now.

>> No.1220732

>>1220725
You have to modify the console with switches in order for it to output 60 Hz - did you read the full sentence?

Sure you can stick an NTSC game in a PAL console with an adaptor (or modding the cartridge slot/disabling region lockout where needed), but unless you add a 50/60 Hz switch it's going to play the games at 50 Hz.

If you've got massive borders, it's outputting 50 Hz... or it's Star Fox

>> No.1220741

>>1220732
Nope, my console is playing F-Zero right now at 60hz on a simple adapter with no modifications.

>> No.1220792

>>1220741
I'm sorry but I think you're wrong. There is no way a PAL SNES will output 60 Hz without physical modification to the PPU, either with switches or a PIC.

Either you bought an already modified SNES or you're talking shite.

Maybe you should take a look at yourself before speaking such untruths.

>> No.1220824

>>1220807
Your baseless claims are not going to change the well-known fact that a PAL SNES (just like the MD and many other consoles) needs hardware modifications to output 480i/60 Hz video, and not just a cart adaptor.

Now please stop shitposting.

>> No.1220826

The PAL and NTSC consoles are near identical, it's mostly up to the cart. Stop it.

>> No.1220845

>The PAL and NTSC consoles are near identical
Yes they are, except for the connection to the pins on the PPU ICs that control whether it outputs a 525/60 or 625/60 video signal - no fucking cart can change this. A cart adaptor on it's own will just play NTSC games at 50 Hz.

Why does lower hz give higher res?

>> No.1220884

>>1220856
The horizontal frequency is more or less the same (16.625 vs. 16.75 kHz), so because of the lower vertical frequency it has more time to scan the screen, so more time for more scanlines.

But with old consoles like this they're still generating the same amount of lines as they would be when outputting 480i, and it's just taking up less vertical screen space - hence the borders and shitty squashed picture.

PAL is great for real TV and film transfers compared to NTSC (Never Twice the Same Color - NES users will know about this), but complete shit for old consoles as they were all designed with NTSC in mind.

It might be my inexperience with the console, but I was pretty amazed at how they made it look and so much like the snes version. Especially the barrel blast level in the first world, so smooth, and large area's, without as much as a hiccup, nice colors and scenery, good music...
