I know the GnG series has a pretty good fanbase in here but what are some good games that are in a similar style? You know the kind that lock you into your jumps they have the tricky platforming and tight action that punishes your mistakes. I personally love these style of games and would like to find more and share some with my fellow /vr/ troopers.

Ill start this off and dump a few more for you guys to try out.

Black Tiger is a 1987 arcade game also from Capcom built on the same hardware as GnG although its a lot more forgiving. You get more armor and can buy armor and weapon upgrades from shops with Zenny of course. This is a really awesome arcade game and it's a damn shame it never got a home port onto the genesis or something. There are lots of ways to play it now virtual console, capcom arcade classics 2 for ps2, and I'm sure there are more ways to play too that arent MAME. Try this one out guys its a lot of fun.

Warder No Mori/Wardner/Pyros is a 1987 arcade game by Toaplan and released by taito. The play controls Dover cartman on a quest to rescue his girlfriend from the Wardner. This game is a little more platform oriented and god damn is it tricky. The action is still tight though as you can get taken out in 1 hit in this game although there is a cape that acts like the armor from gng. This game got a port to the sega genesis, its really damn tricky each part of the level presents a new challenge and its extremely satisfying to clear each challenge. Its pretty fair because the checkpoints are often too like if you get past a hard part chances are if you die you will spawn past that part already again. If you love a good challenge you have to try this game. I don't know if there are any arcade ports on any console though so i think you have to emulate it or get the genesis port.

it is pretty great. the dude who made it also made an excellent game called hydorah which, well, it is to gradius what mildita castilla is to gng. tough, lot of content, good presentation, etc.

They aren't beginner-friendly. Once you get the floaty jump mechanics down it gets a lot easier.
