Chrono Cross is a really tough soundtrack to beat. The only problem with it is the battle music, which is almost uniformly bad, and a couple of the Nikki/Marbule-related tracks.

/vr/ Final Fantasy games also all have great soundtracks (though IV's is a bit weak, IMHO), but that really goes without saying.

SaGa Frontier 2 is my favorite soundtrack of all time.

I get depressed in threads like this because nobody is ever willing to listen to anything in it just because it wasnt a part of their childhood. If they would only just listen to a few and realise how incredible it is. Even just influencing ONE person would be fabulou. Imo easily on par with Legend of Mana's OST.

i think one of the things that made songs so impact-full was what had happened in the game around them.

you had just been sent to a strange time and are wandering around a snowy waste-land and find a strange teleporter in a cave when this music starts playing. i think it captures that sense of wonder perfectly.

same reason why that song from ff6 is so meaningful.

but being real here every song from chrono trigger and pre-11 final fantasies are amazing in their own right.

Well that depends, i loves me the shit outta SaGa Frontier II, but i know how the system works. It's got some sweet ass music and hands down the best backdrops of any game i've seen outside of Muramasa: The demon blade.

The story can be kind of hard to follow the first time around, but i think part of the fun is piecing it together and realizing whats a catalyst for other events.

You got Wil Knights, this guy who digs for magic artifacts called quells, he gets embroiled on this quest to find out about his parents murders. This guy is the behind the scenes guy in history, he and his party's actions affect the very course of the world and the war's of succession.

At the fore' you have Gustave XIII, the oldest prince of the kingdom of finney who was banished for failing a rite of succession in the royal line (which proves your magic prowress)
He has a bad childhood, but his story is a coming of age one and his eventual claim to power through his strength and cunning alone (well that and he is technically the one who has the claim to it.

Im boiling it down to it's bare bones here, but it's very interesting the way the two stories affect each other while at the same time not actually directly clashing together once. Sorry for the essay guys, i just love this game.

Is it true Michael Jackson did the soundtrack for Sonic the Hedgehog 3?

>> No.1227883

>>1227868
I don't think that's ever been completely confirmed. If he had any involvement, it was removed from the game for two possible reasons, either of which, or both of which, might be true: Sega wanted to distance themselves from the child molestation scandals that Jackson was involved in, and Jackson was dissatisfied with the sound quality of the Genesis and wouldn't commit to a project that didn't get the exact sound he wanted.

Personally, I don't think he did. It would have been plagiarism to use Jackson's work without crediting him, and Jackson had a big enough of an ego to sue if that had been the case. The one person who has fueled the rumors claims to have all this evidence but says he can't or won't release it. Most of the music in Sonic 3 has been pretty conclusively shown to be heavily inspired by a variety of pop songs, and I really don't think Jackson would have been satisfied to copy a bunch of tunes and call it a day.

>> No.1227894

>>1227883
I heard that Bradley Buxer had worked on some of Jackson's work and similarities come from there. That also explains why his other work, such as this;

I really doubt this rumor considering Jackson already had a video game about him on the Genesis way before Sonic 3 came out. I don't know if he had any involvement with the Moonwalker game but I am sure he still checked it out just because it involved his music.

So much great music on this thread

I'll add Alundra in there, great zelda style PS1 action RPG in case you havnt played it.
It had some very atmospheric music in places and a story that was darker than I was expecting as far as I remember.

Holy shit, why doesn't the actual arcade game sound this good? Even without the PCM samples, the FM synthesis is entirely different, and way better than what they put in the final game.

Yeah, I checked it out. Shocked I never knew about this until now. That OST is just incredible and irritates me at the same time knowing that the whole game could sound like that and I'll never be able to play it with that music. Literally makes Double Dragon sound as good as one of Sega's machines of the time. I always thought the arcade version of DD sounded awful but this really, really puts the in-game music to shame.

http://vgmdb.net/album/5002
Looking at the credits, it was even arranged by Kazunaka Yamane himself. Makes me wonder what the story behind the OST is. The FM on the OST sounds like a YM2151, which is exactly what the game sports, so why is the in-game arrangement so lousy compared to this? Quite a pickle.

The Tetrisphere OST was great, even though Voss was trying to copy Aphex Twin's sound at the behest of Nintendo.

I hate it when Youtuber put the wrong titles in tracks. "Dead or Alive" was the early 90s J-Pop rendition of the Double Dragon theme featured in the DD2 album. The title theme is simply the Double Dragon Opening Theme.
