Feel free to discuss everything about Heretic and Hexen.

Things to try: Hexercise, Chuxen, Wrath of Cronos, Curse of D'sparil, Omega Heretic, ABBEY, Abandoned Chapel, Dark Portal, Necros, Viscerus, Dark Portal.

Hexercise co-op is pretty fun, but the mod only works on G/ZDoom, and that port's netcode is...fickle at best. Sometimes, it can be smoother than Zandronum - the most popular multiplayer port for Doom engine games - with 10 ping. Other times, it's nigh unplayable from all the stutter. If anyone gets dropped from a game, the game has to be restarted, because there's no in-game joining. If the game goes out of sync, chances are it has to be restarted. The only real benefits are mod compatibility - Zandronum's based on a 4-year-old version of GZDoom, and as such doesn't support many recent mods - and being able to save the game and continue at a later date.

I'm currently putting together a map where you're a prisoner in a castle and you're freed when creatures break out and are now scattered around.

The idea is to escape, but there will be some puzzles and item finding which will serve as optional objectives.

I only started yesterday so there is still a lot of work to do, given that I want it to be fairly large with at least 1 hour of gameplay.

Hexen is the first game I ever played (born in '94). It's my #2 favourite game of all time after Summoner (PS2) and it's my absolute favourite in terms of visual/artistic design. While I prefer H1 over H2, the sequel had incredible multiplayer that I still play all the time with my brother.

Tell me though /vr/, I have never gotten custom WADs/levels working on any doom engine game, how do I go about doing that? I prefer vanilla/dos versions over zdoom/vavoom/all that jazz, but I'm willing to try anything.

Each to his own I guess. It has this sort of charm that I just can't get enough of. I've played through it... 3 times? Which isn't that much really but one of those times was a 22 hour sitting. I also wrote an essay about it in grade 12.
I really liked the main city (Lenelle), I thought it had a lot of life in it. I have a completionist impulse to talk to every NPC in a game, and never have I found it more rewarding in Summoner. You can talk to any drunken soldier, rat catcher, palace servant, merchant - whatever, and they'll each tell you a (really fucking well written) bit about themselves and the city. Compare that to Final Fantasy IV, where I talk to people and all they say is "I am a Dwarf". Summoner through its text, and Hexen through its visuals, manage to completely immerse me in another world like no other games ever have.

Good, I'm glad I'm not that only one who thought this. Every time this is brought up so almost never I always hear people say there's multiple Chaos Spheres, and that each Rider had one. No where in the games does it imply there's more than one.

Having numerous Chaos Spheres also cheapens the whole thing, in my opinion. The thought of Eidolon dropping everything and wanting to retrieve it is much more appealing.

zdoom/gzdoom and Zandronum. Just about anything that runs Doom will run Heretic and Hexen. For Hexen 2, there's probably a number of Quake source ports it'll run on.

Heretic is essentially Fantasy Doom and the Hexen games put more focus on puzzle solving and switch hunting.

The order of games goes
>Heretic > Hexen > Hexen 2
Heretic 2, while a direct sequel, is not part of the Serpent Rider Trilogy. If you liked Jedi Outcast than you'll like that one.

Strife complements heretic and hexen very nicely. None of those are by any stretch halfway between an FPS and an RPG, but they all add a dose of RPGesque character without seriously denting the underlying foundation.

Hexen provides a sense of adventure where Doom and Heretic cannot. The hub design forces you to revisit levels, examining every inch of the world to discover something. This can really breathe life into the game as far as I'm concerned and allows you to thoroughly appreciate the excellent level design, atmosphere, and so on.

I wish there was a wad that let you play Doom but with Heretic's weapons. Should be an interesting challenge.

I got a little taste of it with Hordes of Chaos and its selection of Doom monsters. Seriously, the enemies without guns and other hi-tech shit fit into Heretic so well.

Samsara might be what you're looking for. It's designed to be multiplayer and it's not perfect because I don't think all the weapons were carried over. But you can certainly use Hexen or Heretic's weapons to fight Doom enemies.

Fog should work in software mode, though it won't appear there if you have used a torch. It also works in OpenGL even with a torch used.
