Haven't seen much discussion about FFIX lately, unless I've missed it. Started playing through it again, so why not have a thread?

This is one of the only FF games where I like all the characters. I've always really liked Steiner and his goofy antics. Freya is cool too, but I think it's unfortunate that she kind of falls out of the story after Cleyra. Really, I don't think there's anyone in the game who I don't like.

So, who are your favorite characters?

>> No.1199652

Agreed. I've never been too interested in the plot/characters of the Final Fantasy series, but IX really hit the nail on the head. VI were cool because they were fun, XII was decent because the game accepted that they were all cardboard, but VII I really couldn't handle - way too serious.
IX, I dunno, there's just something about it. I guess Garnet's probably my favourite (hell no I didn't name her Dagger, that scene was retarded)
>dat backstory, how she didn't remember anything from her past life except for that one song
>dem summons
>dat romance being the centerpiece for the plot, rather than a forced afterthought

And of course I adored the gameplay/soundtrack/visuals, but that's standard.

>> No.1199658

Also I thought Quina was forced lolsorandumb comic relief, but it kicked so much ass in battle that I was alright with it.
>Power Glove (does 9999 damage if at one health)
>autorevive ability
>autorevive spell
can't remember if there was an autorevive accessory but if there was I probably used it too.

I loved Steiner too. My favorite character for sure.

Was weird seeing how Amano drew him compared to how he looks in the game.

>> No.1199669

Freya and Quina and Vivi are my favorites.
I have a Freya keychain but it's kind of horrid.

Good game but every time I try to replay it the infuriating missables shit gives me OCD attacks and I end up quitting halfway through disc 1

I know how that goes. I just got to Treno and I'm kicking myself, because I forgot to get the Stellazzio in Burmecia. Now I can't get the Blood Sword for Steiner.

I don't really mind all the dialogue, but you're right about the battles. If there was one thing I could change about the game, it would be to speed things up in that regard.

This boss is actually the reason why that one timed quest is ridiculously generous, since that's the earliest you can fight him.

Me too, this is one of the few times where I don't leave the name on default.

Yes but it's challenging if you fight him the first time you can, especially if you steal all of its items. It's a great risk/skill/reward moment.

I don't understand that concenssus about the speed of the fights. I think it's fine, especially if you set the speed at max.

Mind you the first time I played the game I played it in the horrible PAL 50hz version, without putting fights at max speed, and I didn't even mind it. However my standars have changed since then, there is no way I'd ever play a 50hz game again even if the conversion is fine.

if it could have pulled off a decent dics 3 it could have been the best game in the series. there is so much to love about this game. the whole "theatrical tragedy" theme is very well done. so many feels are in this game. vivi alone has enough feels around him for an entire game, then you add the garnet, freya, and aiko feels.

>> No.1200369

This was the first Final Fantasy I ever owned and was at a decent enough age to understand it mostly but of course being about 12 years old there were a couple of things and themes I didn't pick up on but dam the music was catchy and a joy to listen to, the story and gameplay was also easy to understand which was a welcome change from ff8

I agree with the Disk 3 problem. The story felt so tight with little to no bumps to speak of. Then it seem to just stop to do random collecting for some reason. What's worse is that it seem like they just seem to drop half of the characters stories. They could have done something about Freya during that time and it would have been amazing. But even with that problem I still love IX.
>>1200330
Even at max it's slow as hell. It feel like it was design like you were meant to have haste near the start. Since when you equip auto haste the bar moves like a normal ATB bar.
>>1200325
Forgot can you get Thievery by then? I remember that was my key at beating him.
>>1200308
>>1199652
Same. Or maybe what they could do is let you name her Dagger until her gets to a certain scene (not going to spoil anything). Then it switches back.

What I think I really love about IX is that they really tried to put plot into the battle system. How Dagger has summons at the start, How she basically becomes useless because she's traumatized, trance at some battles. The only thing I don't like is the Trances. I get what they were trying to do but the way they did it made them almost useless. You either get it active on a normal random encounter or it activates when you are trying to do something else like stealing (I would say I hate the stealing % but it's not like it's the biggest thing in the world to miss that flute ;_;).

Kuja is so goddamn fabulous. I think he's a rather underrated villain. I like how his cool arrogance starts to crumble as he learns about himself, and that he does end up having some redemption by the end.

>> No.1202327

I think what I liked about him was that he never tried to be really deep. He was just straightforward about everything and acted very debonair for awhile.

If you love Kuja, then you'll love Sephiroth even better, seeing as the former is a clone of him and his back story as an artificially engineered super soldier dogged by the abnormal circumstances of birth and his estranged successor from the other side of the tracks.

are you fucking joking. This board is inundated with hundreds of FF threads at a time. As much as i like the series in general (especially 9) post in there and stop clogging up the board.

>> No.1202665

I liked Freya in my team but she was too shallow as a character; in the end it felt like her only purpose was to force the story along to the raping of Burmecia and Cleyra so they could establish that the villains were REALLY BAD M'KAY. She probably suffers the worst out of anyone in the game, and it doesn't amount to anything. The Fratley thing was completely pointless and downright mean, she never gets any sort of retribution for the near genocide of her entire fucking race (and Beatrix is ultimately let off the hook), and she gets sidelined for a good portion of the game only to be reintroduced in a comical pissing match with Amarant as if the first disc never even happened. Devastating emotional trauma, what's that?

The prevailing theme of IX was death, and Freya's whole schtick was that being forgotten is worse than death - I guess the writers were being clever by having the game forget about her?

>> No.1202708

I think this guy has one of the best motivations of any villain out there in video games. He's trying to bring his world back to life and he needs yours to do it. Can you blame him?

Maybe there was some third option that I don;t remember in the game, but I always hate cop outs like that.
