Games tend to have the same kinds of levels.
(Fire level, water level, forest level, Monster innards, etc.)
What are your favorite kinds of levels ?
Wich ones do you hate ?
Post screens of levels if possible.

I always enjoy a good digital/cyber space level. The visuals are always interesting if nothing else.
All of Rez and a good bit of Pulseman are this, and I love them both.

Least favorite? Probably cloud levels. Levels where you jump around on JUST clouds. It's boring.
If there's floating ruins or mountain tops or whatever here and there it's usually fine, but if it's JUST clouds it's almost invariably mediocre.

And on that note, Sky Sanctuary was just about the most awesome level in Sonic & Knuckles. It was short and straightforward, yet packed in a ton of fun - cloud jumping, light teleporting, awesome cutscenes, robot invaders flying into the screen, retro boss fights, metal sonic.

Everyone has to hate the "weather pushes you back" stage. Or maybe the "multiple door platform maze" (i.e. Quackshot Taj Mahal stage).

The best kind is, of course, the boss rush stage. The bigger and more elaborate bosses the better.

I thought we were classifying stages by aesthetic/location/whatever rather than gimmick.
I definitely have to go with the trial and error choose-a-path-and-if-you-choose-wrong-you-go-back-to-the-beginning maze if we're talking gimmicks.

I've only enjoyed boss rushes when they're made up of totally original bosses, rather than just boring refights. The Gradius series did this.
It's also fine if a bunch of bosses from an earlier game in the series show up again in some throwback stage, usually with some twists or changes, to get killed once more. R-Type Delta and DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou did this.

I love me some out of place factory levels. See: Donkey Kong Country

The music was probably a big part of that, but they're also some of the most fun stages in the game.

The stage in Ninja Gaiden II was the fucking worst.

My favorites are factory/industrial levels and Desert ones.
Those are always the coolest, even in rpgs.
The ones I dislike are the cloud levels like >>1199467 said, those are annoying, and underwater levels.
Man I hate those, they suck, the only good underwater levels I've seen are the ones from Donkey Kong, all others are crap.

Also.. If we'0re talking limits, I dislike forced scroling a lot.

Clock towers. Fuck them gears (except Mario 64 clock, that was innovative).

Also, goddamn fire or poisonous levels where you have to hurry or die. Jurrassic park 2 on snes had several of those.

sewer levels

don't know why

Beach levels, my favorite is Treasure Trove Cove from Banjo Kazoo.

swamp levels where the swampy part slows you down, but you can avoid it for the most part with platforms, hell yeah.

swamp levels where the swamp is poisonous, not so much.

Urban levels: streets, rooftops, bridges and skyscrapers

Least favorite would probably be the lava / fire level. They tend to have a generic look.

You and me both, brother. Cityscapes excite me and get my imagination churning. Always have.

As for least favorite: Anything that's too generic I suppose. A slight spin on common themes things like "forest" is always superior to straight up looping trees in the background with nothing to spruce it up. If it's straight up "ice stage" or "fire stage" they didn't put enough thought into the game.

Medieval levels, like medivo in Jazz 1 & 2

The soundtrack was awesome as well:

Then again, which song & level in jazz wasn't
