Have never played Parasite Eve in my life but I'm interested into playing the first one since it looks to have such a wonderful atmosphere and a great '90s anime sci-fi feeling. How well has it aged? Should I try the second one as well or I shouldn't bother? The second one doesn't looks so appealing to me, it looks more like a Resident Evil wanabee.

I still really enjoy the original, so it's worth a play. I've never gotten around to the second, but i hear it's almost universally better.

Because a game uses pre-rendered 2D backgrounds with 3D models doesn't make it a "resident evil clone". First because that graphics system was created by AITD. Secondly,, because that and a few puzzles are the only similar gameplay mechanics PE2 shares with RE, both of these being VERY common in jrpgs of the PSX era.

Anyway - PE2 is a fantastic game. It's action game with jrpg elements, compared to PE1 which is a action-jrpg (the difference being that 2 is more action oriented). The general consensus is that 1 has the better atmosphere and story, but 2 has the better gameplay.

The first game is a blast. Great atmosphere and music, neat monsters, and very customizable weaponry. Have fun running out of space for your junk though.

>> No.1191769

The first one is a great game. The graphics are a bit dated by todays standards but the story holds up well. The battle system is unique and the ability to customize your weapons is fairly awesome. Its worth playing for a few hours just to try out the battle system. Has some of the most fun boss fights of that era of playstation games. Plus the second playgroups easily doubles the challenges of the game with the crystler building

>> No.1191903

1 and 2 are masterpieces, avoid 3rd birthday.

>> No.1191916

1 has shit story but fuck awesome plot, it's like a buddy cop film with aliens in this bunch of exotic locations through new york. Final boss fight is frustratingly difficult.

2 has worse story, only 2 boring locations: a desert and a lab, IMO a more fun battle system, more fanservice, hellish bosses and tougher puzzles.

3 is a great, creative game with an interesting body swap gimmick.
Some people will tell you to read the novel or some comic book, but none of it matters at all to understanding the in-game storyline.
All in all it's a great series, every game is worth it.

Donvt worry. Digital goods do not change with time. Even though 15 have passed since it's release, PE1 is exactly, precisely, absolutely how it was back in 1998.

I have no idea what the fuck you're talking about, especially about 3rd Birthday. You know it has even less to do with the novel than 1, right? Itvs not called PE, because they OUTRIGHT DROPPED THE FRANCHISE ALTOGETHER with 3.

And it was shit. 3 is shit. 1 has best story, 2 has best gameplay, 3 is a pile of nonsensical crap in both regards.

I do this too. My tradition is to play MGS all the way through over night the first night we get snow, and to play PE sporadically through December. I especially have fond memories of PE.

>be in middle school
>sit next to cute blonde in English
>we talk, get to know each other, she's into gaems
>borrow stuff from each other and hang out after school
>she's into anime, tells me about PE
>it's fun as hell, end up getting my own copy
>cute blonde turns out to be my first BJ
>also first chick I ever see in person wearing thong and her ass was perfect

Good times, that game is one of my favorites on a system packed with classics.

> The feels. Man, the FEELS.

This game makes me warm and fuzzy inside with memories of playing this for hours on snowy winter nights. Forget sugar plums, I had visions of freaky mutants dancing in my head!

That said, it's not a bad game. It can be a little grindy by modern standards and the controls are a little clunky in comparison to modern games, but the battle system still is itneresting and unique. The EX game map can be convoluted and frustrating, but makes a great drinking game. No, really

PE2 has nothing in common with RE whatsoever. At all. Unless 3D mdels on pre-rendered bg = Resident Evil in your mind.

PE: great atmosphere, great sets, great music, unique gameplay.
PE2: good gameplay, great progression system, stellar ass on Aya.
3rdB: Shit controls, shit gimmick, FF13-grade-nonsense story.

Relax, I did say "A ''little'' grindy" not that it's grindfest 1997.

Most of the grinding is needed for the EX game, especially the Chrysler Building.Moving forward too fast can get you slaughtered on EX mode, which can lead to some grinding.

If you want to survive the Chrysler Building, you are going to need all the levels you can get and the best weapons you can put together. And yes, you want to beat that madhouse to be able to see the EX ending.

The random encounters also sometimes felt grindy due to frequency and annoyance factor. I think the birds were the worst due to frequent spawning and dropping junk for your effort. I'd rather fight those bouncing ball things any day.

That said it's not as grindy as some of the pure RPGs I have played, however, you can't just breeze through and see it all. If you want it all, prepare to work for it.

As to the link? It amused me. Read it if you want.

>Parasite Eve 2 is great and has more in common with Dino Crisis 2 than Resident Evil.

Yes exactly. To me PE2, DC2 and most notably Vampire Hunter D are the starting points to the Onimusha series (and I love them all oh so much, currently replaying the onimusha series which we sadly can't talk about on this board). There has however always been video game genre illiterates who've called those "survival horror", starting by "pro" review sites and magazines which doesn't help.

It's got some issues, like some heavy backtracking and some really tough puzzles to figure out which ruin the pacing for an action oriented game. It's like, at that time developers didn't exactly know how much survival horror influence they should bring in compared.

However it's worth playing if you're a fan of action games with tank controls and pre rendered backgrounds like PE2, DC2 and Onimusha, or even a survival horror fan, or even if you're interested to check out the roots of Onimusha and Devil May Cry. It has a gothic atmosphere kinda like DMC.

If you're a fan of the Vampire Hunter D anime/manga then you shouldn't miss it.

Not the Anon you responded to originally, but I thought aesthetically it was somewhat similar to RE games. Also, the plot progression reminded me of RE2.

That said, yeah, the gameplay was very different, although I wasn't too keen on the combat. I liked the range system for weapons in the original a lot.

I also loved the progression system, like you said. Obviously antiquated nowadays, but it was so cool to have choices.

It's aged pretty well I think, the survival horror aspect's there, but it's an RPG, kind of a turn based style and it's definitely more complex than Resident Evil since you can customize and upgrade your weapons if you spend your points and items right. I couldn't be bothered doing the latter, still beat the game just fine. On the other hand, when I tried playing PE2, I just got bored after a while.
