Good place to start with Doom? I've got the pack from the stickies. After several hours of messing around I'd say Hexen was the most fun (I didn't even know there was a fantasy-themed doom-like, that's an awesome concept ). But maybe I should start with Doom\Doom2\Brutal Doom\some good mod that is better than the original campaign (design-wise, i.e. levels, encounters)?

Try not to save / load during levels, although it's permissible.

Both original games are very, very strong on their own. And pretty fucking difficult too, later on.

I'd get a sourceport with at least mouseain, though. Much more comfortable to use in this day and age, although crouch and jump can break stock maps, like being able to vault across barriers or over pits and skip levels.

I'd just start with doom 1 myself. If you get bored, try hopping around to other wads. Hexen is okay, b for many the levels get tedious. Not sure what maps are available for it, but there is another campaign that adds more RPG elements and such.

Try samsara, and brutal doom, and brutl tumd, and fker, and cyberrunner and fuckit try them all. The good thing about doom mods is they're small and easily downloaded.

Speaking of samsara, term, if you're awake: how feasable is an option to let you choose a character on every level start. That transfers your comparable weapons and ammo from whoever you chose on the previous level. Only problem I can for see is Corvus doesn't have a slot 7, (as of .28, haven't upgraded yet). Anyway. Just a thought.

BD changes quite a lot of things about Doom, adding reloading, takedowns, iron sights, headshots, silly things like "FUCK YOURSELF". Also the balance is really different from vanilla due to changed monster behaviour and jacked-up weapon damage. Not really good for a first-timer.

+ Several improved gore sprites and death sprites that never made their way into the game
+ New Revenant Launchers (scratch-made)
+ New Mancubus Cannon (Mostly handpainted, with additional credits to ID Software, Midway, and Scuba Steve)
+ New Shotgun (Made using resources by Doom Nukem, NMN, Snarboo and a bit of handpainting and editing)
+ New Rifle (Credits going to Eriance and ID Software)
+ New MP40 Replacement (Centered Hacx Uzi I did a while back, complete with ironsights. Credits to Banjo Software)
+ Doomguy Boots (edited from resources by Marty Kirra, I believe)
+ Recovered the screenblood from an earlier version (brings up a couple error warnings on start, but i'm honestly not much of a coder)

Burl Tumd (or "burltoomd" as you call it) is not a Brutal Doom edit.

The Lo Wang and Shrek skins are not a part of Burl Tumd (or BD) just as mouselook is not a part of Brutal Doom.

Furthermore the person you are telling to stop making Brutal Doom edits is someone who made a sizeable portion of the enemy and weapon sprite resources used in Brutal Doom (and up until very recently was not credited) and actually made a couple more such resources as part of his recent edit. I think he's qualified/entitled to make Brutal Doom edits and I hope he continues to do so, if only for the additional resources he makes as part of them.

Reelism is essentially randomized survival. You play on a bigass map, and there's three things randomized for every "round" via slot machine (hence part of the name): The enemy spawns, the weapon spawns, and the "gimmick". Every five (?) rounds, you get a big boss battle. It's pretty great fun with a large array of crap it can throw at you to keep you guessing.

Seriously, I've tried this in other games...making enemies have a skin that "blends in" with common textures. It doesn't work except for at fairly long distances...as in, you'd start to notice the effect if you were, say, observing a monster that's standing the entire length of e1m1 away from you.

In some games, this concept makes sense, but in doom, engagements tend to happen in claustrophobic hallways and caves. You would almost never have an opportunity to use such an effect.

Found that, thanks. Wow, this level is intense. Ammo is a big concern, but it's bearable. But there's really little health there, I had like 17 health during the entire area where you get the red key. The very last ambush was also cool, I had just enough ammo for two BFG blasts and they did the trick perfectly.
Levels like this feel a lot better than maps where you're littered with cell packs, rockets and megaspheres while facing hordes of revenants/barons/archviles/cyberdemons. Are there any wads that are entirely like this?

Samsara has enough capacity to dethrone BD as much as France had enough firepower to defeat Germany single-handely. Regardless of the current popularity of either mod, the simple fact is that BD can only really go downhill from here. You announced it yourself that this is the last update for a long time, and it's getting stale for more people all the time. Samsara, on the other hand, has a shitload of updates inbound, including a clientside gore option that will effectively obsolete Brutal Doom and a whole new character. It just got coverage from the gaming media that you so loved to brag about. The creator not only isn't a massive sperglord that managed to get himself banned from two major Doom forums (and then went on to blame everyone but himself), but he's also actually a very helpful person willing to accommodate as many feature requests as possible (so long as it's not Caleb or Strifeguy, but even then he's willing to help people make custom classes), to the point of including a feature that literally one person asked for. The last level of the first mission pack has swastikas and iron crosses on every wall. Every, fucking, wall. Like there's no sense of design or subtlety in this game.

Alright, guys. I gots a theory. If you kill more than one guy with fatality punches REALLY quickly, you end up with one or more "fatality tokens", which is an inventory item that you get when you successfully land a RIPNTEAR on someone. Thing is, you're supposed to spend those tokens immediately on the guy you just killed. Killing more than one guy near-simultaneously screws that whole system up, letting you keep a token from one extra guy to be used on a completely different enemy. I've tinkered with the player properties to prevent that from happening, but it still allows you to punch quickly at the start of ripping a guy. My guess is that the problem could lie within some ACS thing that Mark wrote. ACS is way beyond me.

Of course, this bug is also present in the regular v19. For the time being, all can say is to try to stop punching as soon as the fatality animation starts.

I played the first episode of DTWID, and wasn't too impressed.

I came up with a dirty workaround that should sort out the fatality mismatch shenanigans. The problem with sneaking in mid-fatality punches is unfortunately still there, but the act of finishing a fatality should now clear ALL erroneous fatality tokens that you might be carrying, hopefully stopping those mismatches from happening again.

Okay, guys. I wanna ask about that big wall texture we all know & love. Which Doom .wad (from id or the fans) had the hardest/most fun/most well designed Icon of Sin variation? The whole arena the "boss" is in should be put to consideration, since the wall texture can only spit out demons.
I personally really enjoy TNT: Evilution's arena & the way it's set up, but felt that you could do so much more with it for some extra "fuck you" put into the mix. Maybe put some enemies behind the middle textures, or something.

I'll be honest, I think Doom is pretty overrated. Mind you, this is true of everything with a dedicated fandom.

For its time, Doom is a fucking masterpiece. It was instrumental in establishing the FPS action genre and to this day remains a highly influential game. Even today, its gameplay still stacks up fairly well if you're just comparing straight action sequences. It also has the benefit of old school shooter design (Quake 3 serves as a good more modern example of this), in that it wasn't designed to reduce the impact of skill curve in how well one can play with it.

But it has its problems, aside from its technological limitations (the lack of 3d environments, the inability to freelook, etc. which are all fixed with modern source ports, but I'm just talking about the base game), the enemy AI is just fucking abysmal, and the monsters often have hilarious limitations that can make them into absolute laughable challenges (pinkie demons are a perfect example here, since it's trivial to completely shut them down if you have the space to move back and forth). Weapon balance is pretty miserable, even taking into consideration that they're supposed to be succeeding one another (there's a reason the super shotgun seems to be the multiplayer item of choice) and they're often sluggish, unresponsive and generally unsatisfying to use. Further, map quality is all over the fucking place; aside from Knee Deep in the Dead, many of the campaigns feature some fucking terrible and downright boring maps, Doom 2 is the most guilty of this where the first half of the game is damn near nothing but boring maps.

All of this shit is fixable with Mods and user made map packs, but that doesn't mean the basic game is immune to criticism but at the same point in time, that is itself a strength of the game. The Doom community is still very active, constantly putting out new material for an engine that's easy to work with and very stable.

I totally agree with you, but I also frequent these threads everyday, because Doom has something that always makes me go back to it. Of course, maps are horrible sometimes, and the AI is hilarious, but overall It's a pretty good game, (also, disagree about the weapons) and I've had more fun with it than a lot of other games I've played.

I just downloaded the official latest version and my friend just went through the map in Doom builder a few times. There's a door that's supposed to open so you can flip a switch that allows you to walk to the exit leading to Map 32. But they didn't program the door to open so it's impossible. And jumping around in the map breaks the map and can get you stuck.

Well, the thing is, Unloved is a giant hub, like Hexen's levels are.
If your maps are one giant hub, then sure, do transitions like that.
If they're actual levels that you progress to one after the other, then keep them as levels with result screens.

That's the weird part, I can use it a few times not just once. It usually breaks around the 4th or 5th go.

Actually I just solved the mystery.

I *was* using single use lines and there was a single use line on every side of the teleport. So it would always break after 4 tries. The 5th was just my bad memory.
