And by overlooked, I don't mean games that eventually got their due like Little Samson or Metal Storm, I mean games nobody talks about, they never come up in conversation with the top games in the system either like the classic Nintendo games.

For me, it's Adventure Island II and III, way more fun than the first game, nicely drawn graphics, ride-able dinosaurs, lots of worlds and levels. In general, a lot of Hudson's later NES releases are overlooked.

>> No.1184090

I feel like Metal Storm and games like Adventure Island have the same amount of spotlight shined on them. They're all dated, (should have been) classics but there were enough similiar clones to stuff like AI which lead to it gaining minimal popularity (at least in the states)

>> No.1184104

Kickmaster rules. It's basically Castlevania but it replaces Simon Belmont with Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Maybe the original Adventure Island, but it's more for it's infamous difficulty farther into the game. Even in Japan there seems to be no nostalgia for anything other than the very first game. I assume it's because everybody assumed, both in Japan and the US, that the later games were as hard as the first one.

Yeah Kickmaster is a good choice, it probably didn't help that it never got a Famicom release.

>> No.1184126

well first off, I don't know how you can think that Little Samson or Metal Storm aren't overlooked but AI 2 and 3 are but w/e

and I love AI but I could just never get into 2 or 3 as much (love 4 btw). the dinosaurs didn't add much fun to the gameplay IMO.

I almost never see anyone talking about the Kunio Kun sports games, specifically Nekketsu! Street Basket: Ganbare Dunk Heroes

This shit is probably the most "cuhrayzee" sports simulator I've ever played, and it's an NES game. Whereas NBA Jam is "Basketball with shoving" this game is "River City Ransom meets Basketball with 3 fucking rims stacked on each side and ridiculous American caricatures to play against"

Character descriptions from wikipedia:

>Every game is two-on-two with baskets being able to be broken by shots and slam dunks. Opponents include the U.S. Navy, New York, (a team of hip hop-obsessed boys), Florida (a team of researchers at the Space Center), Texas (a team of countryside boys), Hawaii (stereotypical surfer team), San Francisco (a team of very powerful bodybuilders), and Las Vegas (a team of magicians).

Famicom Mystery Club, it was a pretty good mystery game with much better sounds and visuals than Jake Hunter. Though I've only played the second one, since it was the only one out of the three translated.

Hell yeah motherfucker.
Worth note, the guy who translated the game is a legitimate professional translator . I know he's worked for Viz, pretty sure he worked on the script for Dragonball or some crap.

Really sad that the two projects for Famicom Detective Club 1 both failed

That's actually really cool, and yeah it really sucks that the first games translation efforts fell through. It also sucks that the third game was on Satellaveiw.

>> No.1184854

>>1184850
To be completely honest, everything that I know about the third game leads me to believe it would be playable without the Satellaview data. The Satellaview stuff was just voice data that played over the text, sure it'd be cool to have the voice acting but lets be fair it's not really gonna help non native speakers.
No idea if it's been dumped even, I should probably look into that

Zen The Intergalatic Ninja. Had never heard about it until a few months ago.

it's an action game with a lot of stages being a different gameplay type. Some stages are kinda like Street Fighter 2010, another is like a cart chase in isometric view, etc

Gameplay is tight, graphics and musics FANTASTIC both on an artistic and technical point of view, difficulty is hard but you can play on easy and give yourself more lives if you'd like to.

Imo Mission Impossible is very looked upon.

Based on the TV show and made by Konami, it's a lot like Metal Gear, except better than the NES Metal Gear. You can choose to fight or to go stealth for a good part of the game. Gameplay and music are great. It's REALLY REALLY hard though, and sometimse a bit unfair, for example you'd find out how to get out of the snow level by yourself only after you're so tired of turning in round that you'd start punching every single wall... also the floor traps in the later levels are very unfair imo. But past those points it's a very solid game.
There are also moments of diversity for the sake of it and for fun which was rare at the time (think kinda like Vice Project Doom), for example the 2nd stage is a boat chase from topdown view.

If Famicom counts, Moai Kun (again, by Konami) should be given more credit. It's a puzzle-platformer in the vein of Fire'n'ice or Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle. You have to save all your friends in the screen while pushing rocks, and avoiding/killing enemies; Be careful not to block yourself by pushing the wrong block or you'll have to press the suicide button so gently taken from Lolo Adventure!

The concept of this game was totally ripped off by the company which made Toki Tori and became famous with it. That's okay though because it's a great concept.

Super Off Roads isn't an unknown game, but it's overlooked. It's the most fun racing game on the console but it's overlooked only because it's a sports game, and 'gamers' dismiss sports game just because it's "sports" and because with how sports games have mostly become in these recent generations, they've forgotten that they could be fun.

The NES version is also superior to other console versions because it's the only one in which you can play 3-4 players.

Everybody knows Batman on NES by Sunsoft, as well as Batman Return Of The Joker, and also Batman Returns on SNES.

But there is also Batman Returns on NES which is a whole different game and which is completely overshadowed by the other ones, even though it's definitly better than say, Return Of The Joker.

It's a challenging beat'em up with enough variety, a dark atmosphere, just what you need for story and very faithful to the source material (contrary to Batman by Sunsoft). The only shame is that, just like Batman Returns on SNES, I wish there was a 2players co-op mode.

That is some Megaman ~3-4 tier music right there.
Silver Surfer had great music too, but people seem content with just labeling it as the "hardest nes game ever" without even paying the slightest bit of attention to it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGNSHNf-nlU
Worst part is that people compare it to things like Battletoads without apparently ever even having played either of the games.

Bucky O'hare on the NES was underrated too, but since the Screwattack shit came up today I'm guessing it'll get at least a little bit of upswing.
