Promethius (the DoDonPachi player, Western high-score holder) uses a keyboard. He uses a linear row of direction buttons, not the inverted T shape. This config is arguably better than even arcade sticks.

There's one valid excuse, and that's if you're using an arcade stick (with Sanwa/Seimitsu parts). It might be slightly worse than a keyboard, but if you want to play in an arcade you have no choice. And you don't want your stick skills to decay while you're not in an arcade.

>> No.1183675

>>1183670
True.

I prefer to play with a keyboard myself for several reasons, but I recognize the value of an arcade stick. I'd also add flight stick to the list of exceptions.

I have mostly platformers in mind when I come by these threads.

Having one finger on each button feels so much better than doing everything with your thumbs.

Pads only start to become really handy when the game uses several trigger buttons, analog sticks and main face buttons. I didn't buy one until I got really into Devil May Cry 4.

I actually have that exact one. And I can't help but wonder if your post is ironic...
To everyone looking for a pad, for the love of god, don't buy this one. It's like the entire D-pad is 5 millimeters above the 'registering' point, you need to press the D-pad itself down, before you can even start pressing 'up' 'down' 'left' 'right', and to make matters worse, now it occassionaly just keeps 'holding' a direction a fraction of a second longer than I do, making accuracy games (say schmups like parodius) unplayable. Now I only use it as a backup, using the analog stick, to play with friends.
Again, looking for a pad, do not buy this one.

lol. imagine playing street fighter 2.

I used to play Sango Fighter and SSF2T for msdos.

When playing 2player, one guy would be on wasd and the other on the direction keys. If i held a certain button, then he wouldn't be able to input certain keys on his side (due to keyboard input limits). So for instance, i would hold my roundhouse key and he wouldn't be able to block and i would get free hits on him. god, this led to so many fistfights between me and my brother

but games like Star Control 1 and 2 got it right. not that it's a bigt achievement considering each player only uses 5 keys.

as for emulators. never tried 2 players. by the time emulators came out, my brother and friends grew out of gaming. Gaming forever alone.......

I sometimes use a Wii classic controller for NES/SNES. When I don't, my SNES layout is the bsnes one, except in Super Metroid where I use this weird setup.
- Arrows for movement
- F for Select
- G for Start
- D for A (Jump)
- Space for B (Run)
- W for X (Shoot)
- S for Y (deselect)
- Q and E for L and R trigger

I also use this weirdness for PSX
- WASD or arrows for D-pad
- IJKL for buttons
- QEUO for L1 L2 R2 R1
- Apostrophe for Select, Return for Start

Here's a generic layout I use for most N64 games on an Xbox 360 controller:

N64 = 360

Start = Start
Control Stick = Left Stick
D-pad = D-pad
A = A
B = X
C-U = Y
C-D = B
C-L = LT
C-R = RT
L = Back
R = RB
Z = LB
