10 for hagane in a local cd/dvd store in my town 3 years ago the guy had ordered a bunch of games on ebay it was in the lot i bought most of the games but the other games werent anything special.

Earthbound I traded my 3ds back when it had just came out + zelda ocarina of time 3ds + ssf4 3ds+ 225$ to get it.

Your turn i wanna hear your stories!

Do you mean actually rare, or "rare" as in expensive? Because I have no goddamn idea what I own that's legitimately rare.

The most expensive thing I own is probably Mega Man 7 with the box and manual, which I've had since it came out.

Well the issue is you started with "rarest" in reality Earthbound isn't that rare. A better starter would be 2 most valuable games. Also /vr/ is a very slow board.

This is the rarest game I have, and it's not even retro, which just shows how limited my collection is. Nonetheless, it would probably be worth way more than EarthBound if it weren't for GameStop reprinting the damned thing.

You are fucking stupid. I got my Earthbound from some guy who walked into the used game store I was working at in 1999 with a case of them. I paid $15 or $20 for it then in 2009 I sold it to some moron but you're an even bigger one. I only got $200 cash and $250 credit in his store.

Not super rare but here we go.

Harvest Moon 64. I borrowed the game from a friend and instantly fell in love with it. Only place I could find it at the time ways Toys R' Us where I bought it new for 40 bucks, and by that I mean my dad was awesome enough to buy it for me. I think that was around 2001 or 2002 but I'm not sure. Anyways, it's still safely in my possession and one of my favorite games ever so it's not going anywhere.

My second rarest might be Record of Lodoss War. The funny thing about that game is that I have never played it yet though I want to. I ordered with it a Dreamcast from Ebay long ago along with all the other Dreamcast stuff you'll get to see when I post it. Anyways, the games, controllers, and wires came, but no system or VMU. Seller swears he sent it and was nice enough to reimburse part of it but I hypothesize it was lost in the mail when some volunteer opened it up and liked what was inside. Anyways, I think Record of Lodoss War is the second rarest game I have but you guys tell me as this is all the retro games I own with the exception of Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped which I just picked up recently.

That's a good rule to have! You are smart. Honestly, video games are about having fun. If a person was smart, they would only collect the games that interest them—games they really like. Countless times I have looked up at my boxed Rocket Knight Adventures game and felt really cool. Whenever I look at my copy of Stadium Events however, there is a certain level of respect I have inside for the game, but a big part of me also feels like I wasted money. I mean, anyone can play it on a ROM and the game isn't exactly great. It's not like it's my favorite game or anything. But alas, to complete my collection, I needed a copy of it, so I bit my tongue and bought it. Some people would say I'm hardcore. Maybe that's true. Whether or not it's a good thing is debatable! Haha

I actually like Micronics' work on the NES (not the Famicom, god some of them are just awful). And strangely enough, I like the NES version of the theme the best. It's raw, limited, but it captures the song it's supposed to be.

Micronics was pretty hit or miss with their music. Supposedly, the Capcom games had Capcom programmers work on the music, even 1942. To be fair, arcade 1942 isn't much better to begin with. A notable "miss" would be Thundercade's music. I couldn't find the arcade version's without gameplay, but the NES version just sounds so... depressed.

They have character. Granted, TOSE games are infinitely better programmed games (even the likes of M.U.S.C.L.E. or Chubby Cherub), but they feel sterile. Micronics games look and feel like the people making them had contempt for the world and just didn't care. In spite of that, they could churn out some impressive ports like Twin Cobra or GnG, and some good games like Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3. Indeed, Twin Cobra is probably the best Micronics game on a technical standpoint. I will admit that they made some atrocious games, like Ikari Warriors or Athena. They're not even enjoyable as Kuso-ge. Ikari Warriors II is a much better job of a game, even if it has a steep learning curve.

The only Micronics games I have are Tiger-Heli and Twin Cobra. Tiger-Heli is a pretty good port of the arcade version, but Twin Cobra was somewhat downgraded for it's NES version. Still, both games are probably as close as they could have been to their arcade versions. If you want a real butchering of a helicopter shooter game, look at Romstar's version of Taito's Twin Eagle.

Complete Jack Bros and Zombie Nation. Zombie nation came out of a box of 300 untested NES carts I bought from a thrift store/yard sale for just under $100. Jack Bros came from a lot on Craigslist. I basically bought a giant garbage bag full of stuff from this guy for $35. Besides Jack Bros I got 2 Genesis consoles, a Power Base Converter, a PsOne with travel screen, and a whole slew of other games and accessories, including about 30 controllers spanning every retro console. Too bad the box was smashed in the garbage sack. Took me days to clean everything too, it was so filthy it looked like the bag had been buried in the back yard :v Still one of my best finds ever, regardless of the condition.

Who developed Twin Eagle for the NES? Was it Micronics, or someone else? Only thing interesting about Twin Eagle is the fact that it's called "Revenge Joe's Brother". Who is Joe? What happened to his brother? Why are we revenging his brother? Is this the original Revengeance?

I like Tiger Heli a lot due to sentimental reasons. I lived in Greece for a long time and I had an American NES there Which I have since brought back and still works that didn't work. So I came to the USA, and was itching to find an NES to relive my nostalgia. So I got a lot for $30 that only included the console and a couple of games. Those games were All-Pro Bball, Star Voyager, Code Name Viper, Rocket Ranger, Alien Syndrome, and Tiger Heli. Might've had more games, I couldn't remember. But Tiger Heli, as well as the good games (Viper and Syndrome), give me good memories.

Well, there's a difference. The only people who buy Stadium Events are people who, like you said, are just willing to go all out for a complete NTSC collection. After all, it's just the standalone version of an otherwise dirt common pack-in title. They're not buying it for the game itself, they're buying it as a collector's piece.

Something like Rocket Knight Adventures, on the other hand, is one of the best platformers ever and is worth having just because of that: to be played. Thankfully, aside from a few select titles like Gunstar Heroes and especially MUSHA, the retro boom hasn't really hit Genesis (Probably because the Game Grumps and other Youtube celebrities hate the Genesis and I swear it seems like whoever's popular on Youtube practically controls the retro game market anymore. Good for Sega fans but sucks for everyone else), so despite the fact that it's a game a lot of people are looking for due to word of mouth, it's still pretty cheap. I used to get really agitated about how huge Nintendo fanboys most of Youtube is, but in retrospect, the ignorance is probably for the better considering how oversaturated the Nintendo market became. Glad I got most of the games I was interested in back in the early 2000s. $25-30 each for games like A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Mega Man X1, and then getting even worse from there. I feel bad for anyone trying to get into old game collecting nowadays.

Clayfighter 63 1/3. It was the first thing I bought on eBay back in 2006, and I think I paid about $20 for it. Loose cart of course, but it doesn't have the barcode sticker on the back like a lot of those I've seen.

This one's special to me because I would rent it just about every weekend when my Dad would take me to Blockbuster. He'd rent a movie, and I'd rent a game--usually Clayfighter. I know it's worth more now, but I'd never let it go.

Do you remember those old Funco Land catalogs? I remember seeing games listed at much cheaper prices compared to what they cost now days! Haha

I haven't noticed that about online celebrity gamers controlling the retro market. Of course, I don't watch many of them, though. Hmm, that's interesting! They really influence the price of these old games now, you say?

I've found the best time to buy games is in the summer. When it is warm and everyone is out doing things, they tend to sell games at cheaper prices. But during the winter months, you'll often have to pay every penny of what a game's current worth is.

What you said about owning a full NES collection is true. That's exactly why I bought my copy of Stadium Events. Rocket Knight Adventures is one of my childhood games and I totally agree that it is one of the best platformers ever. My buddies, who don't know much about game collecting, always drool over my CIB Battletoads game. They think it's so cool that someone owns Battletoads in the box complete with the book. They could care less about my obscure NES games; Battletoads is the game they always ask me about! Haha

Unfortunately.

These are the two biggest examples. Both games completely skyrocketed in value the moment they had respective Game Grumps videos made of them.

I guess it depends on your definition of rare.
International Superstar Soccer 2000 is allegedly rare but I see it all the time and picked up the two copies I have as part of a lot which worked out to $0.50/each.

The two finds I like best are a sealed copy of Mario Story for the N64 and Castlevania Legends for the GB that I picked up for $1 each

As someone mentioned earlier, I'm glad these guys don't do much Sega stuff.

Although if you're looking for a game where language isn't a barrier or you can speak Japanese, a lot of the Megadrive and SFC versions can be aquired for cheaper than their US counterparts. Even though you have to pay international shipping for some places like Rakuten, you can still often get it for cheaper because of the lower costs.

Tell me about it. When I ordered a bunch of Super Famicom stuff from Japan, I got a CiB copy of Seiken Densetsu 2 for $3 and CiB SD3 for $20.

The one Genesis/Mega Drive game that I want the Japanese copy of is unfortunately more expensive than the North American version.

No idea why people consider Earth Bound rare. One of these days, someone is going to crack open an old storage locker, or a warehouse, and find a couple of hundred sealed copies, and the value will get raped. Don't even dare say "it can't happen", either, because it has happened literally thousands of times.

Just like it did with sealed copies of Jet Set Radio: www ebay co uk/itm/190369440085

i love the "earthbound is rare guize, srsly!" stories.
lets take a trip back to 1997, christmas time.
i went to my local best buy to check out the new games that holiday season and what do i see in the games dept?

A FUCKING WALL OF 30 DOLLAR COPIES OF EARTHBOUND! YES, A FUCKING GODDAMN WALL. IT'S NOT RARE YOU FUCKS, GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD!

im pretty sure somewhere out there is a wharehouse of all the unsold copies of the game, just waiting to be found. if i did, like a palette of them, i'd dump them on ebay 100 CIB and ruin the value.

Jet Set Radio price was from actual rarity. Most Dreamcast games that are worth a bit are actually because it was either low print or copies were lost/destroyed due to the DC's death. Earthbound, Mario, Zelda and the like are from blind demand from the "retro" culture. They stay that high because people will pay that to say they own that gem of gaming. Deflation will occur with these games like it did with comics where a newer generation will see no value in owning physical media. You will still have a bunch of 30/40 year olds trying to tell you there item is worth hundreds but the majority will not care and just buy digital/emulate.

$40

I was there when they were putting out the paper slip at ToyRus. I was a kid and this was before the internet for me, so didn't know much about this game. I bought it on a whim thinking it was just another Panzer Dragoon game.
