I'm attempting to play RTC-3057 with Zandronum, but i keep getting an error "can't add non-weapon pistol to weapon slots". It will not give me a pistol to start with.

Supposedly the pistol syntax is off according to http://forums.newdoom.com/showthread.php?t=34513

Ive opened one of the lumps and syntax looks fine. still searching.

I'm not much of a doom player (in fact I've never finished any of those games), recently I've been playing through Doom 2 and I ended in that very level, I think it's the 16th. Killed everything that was moving, but couldn't find the exit. I wandered for at least 45 minutes around.

Phocas Island! Amazing map, extremely highly recommended.

My personal project will be kind of an extreme in this theme. Exploration will be the sole goal of the game, where the player is shipwrecked on a long since deserted island/city of an ancient culture. Think pompeiji with clockpunk and no ash.

The way I got it to spiral was by including the +SHOOTABLE (and +UNSHOOTABLE and a couple of damage factor 0's to make it still invulnerable; even with their names those two tags don't conflict) and giving it health, and then having it damage itself every tic and putting a (maxhealth# - health) expression in the angle parameter along with the starting angle so that it changes the angle every tic and I didn't have to manually enter the changes in angle for a bunch of spawned actors for a whole lot of tics.

Turn off Vsync. Neither Zdoom or Z& have a limit of 60, they can either cap at 35fps (internal, designed frame rate) or unlock the framerate from the internal clock (unlimited).

So if you're being limited to 60fps that only leaves Vsync or an external framelimiter as the cause.

I'd second Unloved.
Plays spooky n' shit with the atmosphere but still retains core doom gameplay.

Cold as hell is another one, I didn't like it but I can appreciate the effort that went into it. It's closer to being like survival horror in a way, you also have to try and avoid monsters if you can. Plus it's god audio logs and all that cool stuff.

Ghouls forest I have never played but I hear it's spooky as well.

There are probably other wads that others can recommend. There was this one wad called like...."chogorsh" or "cheogorsh" or some shit like that. I cant remember, it was weird. Played it to the end years ago but it had a bit of an off vibe to it, well made at least (but you would get lost at times). I think it was made by an eastern european guy.

So I was playing the "Cold as Hell" campaign

Swinging doors, sliding doors, entire chairs and tables made from 3d floors

When I saw that there were sink faucets made from 3d floors I lost it. I ain't even know what's real anymore. That is just some seriously impressive shit.

I know from Phocas Island that source ports can do sloped floors now, my question is why Doom maps still don't look as architecturally sophisticated as some of the newest maps from the BUILD engine community

Is it because Doom editors don't have a 3d realtime preview mode?

What I don't get is why now that there's slopes most Doom mappers still map with flat surfaces everywhere. I am all for making a much better icon of sin but I really, really hate that design:

1. Using the original icon of sin head design, without any modification, makes it look like you pasted it onto a skellington. My first reaction was DERP DERP CUT N PASTE JOB which is not what you want.

2. Fucking rotations, good god. If you can't do it with rotations then call it a "placeholder" and beg someone to make a proper sprite with rotations. This goes back to point 1: that head only looks good from the front, and on a huge wall. Billboarded like it is, it looks like shit. We want to see the depth of its face, we want to see its profile. Model that shit in 3D and then sprite it out.

3: This builds off of the previous two points: you can't sprite for doom by making 2D images. I'm sorry, you can't. I don't care what people are doing and if they occasionally look good. It's pointless. Doom's sprites were made with pictures of fucking clay sculptures. Doom is actually rendered claymation. So at the very least, to sprite in the Doom style it's gotta be 3D modeled and rendered into a sprite. Your sprite looks good, but it doesn't look like Doom. It looks like a SNES shootemup boss.

It is HUGE. When you move slightly to the left and right of an imp, and it billboard-follows you, it doesn't look too bad because you barely notice it. But when you move to the left and right of that sprite, you see it very clearly rotate to face you and not in an attractive way.

If you don't want full rotations, give it partial rotations. Don't render its behind but give it front-left and front-right, and then just copy those rotations for the behind, behind-left, behind-right ones, just so it has the full range.

I was actually talking about this in the IRC channel last night. It seems like the boss's hitbox is its entire body (thanks for confirming that) but it's never obvious if you're hurting it.

That's a fundamental rule of video games, that every action you perform should telegraph itself back to the player. Like... Normally when you hurt an enemy in Doom (or ANY video game for that matter), the enemy growls, it shows little blood sprites, it flinches, etc.

This boss just kinda stands there and tanks it. The player has no way of telling if her attacks are having any effect. That really is the most glaring problem this boss has.

The most actively developed of the three. New devbuilds pretty much daily. Uses a heavily modified version of Doom's original renderer, allowing for such things as slopes and flat 3d floors.
It's zdoom with an OpenGL renderer allowing for some fancy effects with lighting and 3d slopes. Keeps up fairly well with ZDoom, but might sometimes be just a day or two behind. Also has a command to select ZDoom's renderer, so there's not much reason to have both.
MP-centric port featuring C/S architecture. Based on a 4-year-old version of GZDoom with some feature backports here and there. Largely incompatible with recent ZDoom mods, but makes up for it by being the only highly moddable port that can reliably handle more than two players in online play.

ok guise so I downloaded GZdoom, I downladed that IWAD thingy and ZDL, added shit as in screen, when I press launch everything works like it's supposed to, except I don't get to choose which WAD I want to play (when I run just GZdoom I can choose wads, but then brutal doom is not working). What do if I want to chose wads and brutal doom at the same time? Or do I have to choose it manually in the ZDL everytime I want to play? Also, if I add Russian Overkill, will it be compatible with brutal doom? I'm completely new to this so be patient pls

TNT. Plutonia is fucking annoying too often in vanilla.

Un-aim-atable chaingunners, invisible arch viles (only ever on chaingunners), running through damaging zones is too often required. REVENANT TRAPS INSIDE RENENANT TRAPS HAHAHA REVENANTS, every key is a trap, teleporters almost always lead directly into a monsters face, after a while every single level cold-starts with monsters shooting at you.

There are a few gems level-wise here and there, but it annoys me too often.

TNT doesn't do anything particularly special, however, but neither does plutonia.

You play as JC Doomton, who is sent to a demon-infested Liberty Island to free Gunther and secure UNATCO HQ. You play through all DX levels, except it'd be more Satanic and have more demons.
You can find secret aug canisters to give you superpowers, like Sanic Speed, Demon Strength, Bullet Time, Ballistic Protection and Superman Vision, there would be upgrade cans too, but those are secrets.
You need Bioenergy for aug powers, BE cells can be found scattered over the map.
Killing is (obviously) the only way to get skill points, you can use that to upgrade your Weapon Skills (and Swimming)
Grenades like LAMs, Gas Grenades would be a thing.
There'd be alot more cyber-enhanced enemies, so they are vulnerable against EMP nades.
Melee weapons could be useful, you can use the prod for a silent takedown.
All weapons no longer need to reload and can be carried all at once, they have been changed to meet Doom standards, and a few new ones have been added.

I only have to figure out a way how the Deus Ex plot would incorporate demons though.

Alright I haven't played DOOM since the mid90s, and I want to give it ago along with the bajillion mods recommended. I have a particular question, though. I have the classics on steam and I really hate the DOSBox emulator that Ultimate runs on since it's causing uncomfortable lag. I downloaded zdoom and I'd like to know how to make Steam run it via Ultimate DOOM so I can book hours and upload screenshots to the community.

I recomend you to download ZDL and replace dosbox.exe with the ZDL executable. It's a pain in the ass to load WADs while executing ZDoom via steam.

You have to unzip all the ZDL files into the base folder, and then rename zdl.exe to dosbox.exe. Don't worry about backup anything, since I don't really think you'll be back to using DOSBox.

ZDL is easy to configure, so I think you won't have any problem. That's how I run Doom anyways.

I think you impulse-made that comment and then realized how much bad press it'll be if people think you're gonna be defensive about anyone achieving popularity even on his level, and so deleted it and now are denying it.

Ugh why are the Spear of Destiny mission packs by Formgen so terrible?

Everything looks awful. The wall textures are too colorful and garish, and the sprites are like clumsy MS Paint jobs.

Pic related: Here's Adrian Carmack's original Angel of Death. A well-drawn, well-animated red demon who wouldn't look out of place in Doom or Heretic.

Notice how speckly and textured its arm looks?

Which is fine, but then, notice how NOT textured its hands and feet look? It's like they gave up halfway through. Which pretty much sums up the whole experience.

Wolfenstein Spear of Destiny: Great game. But holy fuck, stay away from Formgen's expansion packs.

Samsara has enough capacity to dethrone BD as much as France had enough firepower to defeat Germany single-handely. Not even Total Chaos could do it now (of course it would explode and get a lot of attention at first, but would fade away and everyone would be talking about BD again in a few months). If you really think that I am afraid of someone dethroning me, you must have been smoking too much weed.

I have literally no stake in this drama because I dont follow doom forums (save this one) but if you're not what these people say you are then you're not. Though if you are just be more polite, remember where you came from man - the modding community.

Not everybody will like you because not everybody likes the same stuff and some personalities in the community are people who have been there for so long or made big things so they think they can be wankers to everybody. Some people seem to say you are like this and it gives the air of "guy made something big, then acted like a jerk towards fans" which is not good at all.

Anyway, I think your getting permabanned (instead of liftable banned) from the zdoom forums was lame and I like your maps. So there's that.
