When I first heard about him, I saw some of the vids, I liked it for the most part, then never really saw anymore, then finally went back and watched a lot more episodes. I dig it. The newer ones are awesome. Where he's just himself

It's most just him saying "shit" and "fuck" over and over again. With maybe a couple of minutes of him talking about the game. Then 1/3 of a over the top ending of him fighting whatever he was playing. I don't really find him funny. I'm not that big of a fan of swearing just to swear and not a fan of toilet humor which is what he does a lot.

While I find the humour lacking, I like the information he gives in his videos. James Rolfe is also a pretty cool guy and someone who'd be awesome to play old video games with.

I like the videos. But I hate it when people who have never played the games he makes fun of take it all too seriously. Then they'll claim the games suck even if they haven't played them or really know much about them. As someone who actually grew up enjoying Deadly Towers and Fester's Quest despite their flaws it's irritating to me.

Many of the games on AVGN do suck and I've played a lot of them. Back to the Future for NES was a whole wasted weekend for me. I never rented that one again. I wish I had the DeLorean so I could go back in time and rent something else. But some of the games are just flawed in some way or another that is easily exploited for laughs.

I don't understand his popularity. I tried watching one of his videos but I lost interest after a few minutes. Then again, I don't understand the popularity of half the things on YouTube.

The only thing I really use it for these days is to find quick gameplay footage before going out to rent / buy something. I don't go through actual reviews because they're just someone else's arbitrary opinions. That doesn't say anything about whether or not I'll enjoy the game myself. If I can just watch a little gameplay footage, I can get an idea of how the game plays out and judge whether or not it may be down my alley.

Funny thing is I didn't like him when I was 16 and I made a point to let everyone know about it whenever it came up since I was far too highbrow for his random swearing.

Now I'm 21 and trying to catch up with all the episodes. I like how the nerd is in his little self-contained bubble impervious to most outside influences like memes or other pop opinions.

And love him or hate him, you really have to appreciate his insanely huge collection and the fact that he played them way back when, unlike a lot of other internet gaming personalities who are only playing catch-up with old titles 20+ years after their release.

It's nice. Outside of the AVGN persona he's even better, just an overall cool guy.

Don't like the Mike guy he hangs out with though. Not everyone is suited to being in front of a camera and he seems to make things awkward.

as said before, too much swearing with no context isn't funny, it is tryhard. But sometimes he has good moments and he does actually make valid points.

I don't mind the guy, I just don't like the context-free swearing.
