Yeah, without the manual it's pretty impossible to figure out what exactly you're supposed to do

Especially when there's about 500 different ways to start the game, and then there's the fact that certain species hate other species and will attack you if you've hired one of their enemies on your crew, etc, which you need to know, and overall depth of the whole thing is Marianas-trench-tier.

Big complicated game.

>the manual's even got an excellent short story set in the Starflight universe, written by Robert Silverberg, which itself contains a big hint about something you can do

Fuck so good though

Mah nig! Loved playing this game, it was the only game my dad and I ever played together...I would write notes from the aliens we met, and even charted the wormholes on the star map that came with the game. Good. Fucking. Times!

Samurai Kid for Gameboy Color. Top tier game that never made it outside Japan. Even among retro gaming communities it is rarely mentioned.
http://www.gamingsanctuary.com/SamuraiKid.html
Found about it thanks to HG101's article for Hamerrin' Harry series where Daiku no Gensan - Kachikachi no Tonkachi ga Kachi (also a great game) has similar gameplay.
http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/hammerin/hammerin2.htm
And considering the cult following of Hamerrin' Harry in western market it's such a shame that this Hammerin' Harry game never made it outside Japan.

Pixy Garden is so goddamn obscure and underrated it's criminal. It's the definition of comfy for me. Has really nice character designs too, the illustrator CHOCO also did the designs for Xenosaga.

There's probably two people on all of /vr/ who have even heard of it.

The game was released in the US and also emulates well so if you're curious there's nothing stopping you.

It's a sim game where you have the play area divided into a few smaller areas. You place various items like rocks and plants which have elemental affinities, and you place the pixys who start as embryo-looking things. Depending on the area they're in, they'll accumulate elemental affinities based on the items in their proximity. They can be evolved into different types depending on their elemental levels, and you place them at various parts of the world to max out the world's own elemental levels within a time limit.

Not sure what you can compare it to though.

That's right /vr/. I don't think it's all that bad. Not the best game in the series but it definitely doesn't deserve the bad rep it's gotten over the years.

I prefer the Genesis counterpart, but I think I'm alone with that.

I have both, but that flip jump kick thing isn't really any fun.
