The original for game preservation.
The PSONE for aesthetics.

>> No.1168452

PSX mini came packaged with better controllers IIRC. In fact, they were probably the best ones Sony ever made.

Unless the psone is unmoddable I don't see how it could break any more often than the originals. They had some build quality problems.
Aesthetically, the old one looks better.

First genesis had way better sound. Model 2 is muted/filtered in comparison. Model 3 goes the other way and it's sound is extra high. CDX is similar to Model 1.

While yes it's youtube quality, it's still good enough to hear the difference.

Though someone mentioned that model 2's have different revisions that sound different as well. So, you can look into that if you want or avoid them.

Genesis model 1 HD graphics has better sound.

SNES mini is better looking, lacks eject button and apparently looks better through RGB.

SCPH-750x PSX is the last model before they took out the expansion ports.

If you want better sound though, get a 5000 series as they still have the same audio chip as the original audiophile PS1.

>> No.1168515

I like the PSONE better just because it's a mite bit smaller. Me and my brother could easily pack it in one of our bags in a matter of a minute when we went on vacation.

Note, when opening up ANY snes, turn the power button ON for a few seconds (unplugged) so it bleeds any remaining power, otherwise you can easily blow a fuse.

It's actually as simple as looking for ones with EJECT molded into the button instead of stamped on with paint. You can make absolutely sure by looking inside the expansion port, on 1chip motherboards you'll see part of a silver ring through the gap. On non 1chips you'll see "the three dots of doom"

The best would probably be the 1xxx series, since it had the best audio quality and all the jacks and whatnot, with the CD mechanism replaced with a newer model one.

That way you get the quality audio without the CD reading issues.

Barring that, the 75xx series still has the parallel port and has the Sound Scope feature for the music player.

I still think that the whole "original Playstations had hi-fi audio quality" thing is bullshit.

Yes, I know of the rumours that they included higher quality DACs. But did anyone actually open them up and catalogue what parts they used?

About the only visible difference is that the original models have RCA outs, but that doesn't make much difference as long as you can find properly shielded cables for the multi av out.

>> No.1172120

>>1172110
Countless "audiophiles" have opened them up and dissected them.

While they arent quite as good as some TOTL players, they are much better than most.

It is a common mod to bypass the video/sound circuit, add an external power supply and replace the capacitors with high quality ones, this actually does make them sound as good as high end players.

The deal was, Sony didn't have time to engineer a whole new DAC, so they just designed the board to use some they already had shitloads of. Which were fucking GREAT. In the early 2000s, people were selling the chips (scavenged from Playstations) on eBay for about $25-$30.

>> No.1172351

Considering I don't need GameShark support, I prefer the PSOne. It's mostly for aesthetics and the convenience of having the console in a smaller size. This is strictly my opinion, but I think the PSOne is the best looking console ever made. I wish the PS2 or even the PS3 were more along the same design. Of course, it may be difficult to fit all that hardware into such a small housing.

As for the SNES, I'd prefer the Mini. Similar reasons as above. It's also worth mentioning that the original SNES models (or at least some of them) lacked UV protective coating, so they started to discolor very quickly. Even my classic NES retained its natural color longer than my SNES.

>> No.1172365

SNES mini looks better than the US SNES, but I prefer the PAL/SFC look over both.

>> No.1172503

Part of the problem is that in the 1xxx series the CD drive is too close to the hot power supply found on those models, which isn't good for its life expectancy. Unless you keep replacing the CD mechanism of course.

Little known fact, but every PS3 model can play PS1 games just fine.

I usually use that since my PS1 memory cards are completely packed, with my PS2 as a backup. I like the controllers more too, the PS1 controllers were so stiff.

I haven't plugged in my actual PS1 in years.

mine starts with UN60 and its a SNS-CPU-1CHIP-02 don't know the significance of the -02 at the end but theres -01, -02, and -03. It has Eject molded on to the eject button, and the ABS plastic does not show any signs of yellowing.

I've also got a PAL SNES but that's probably not a 1chip. Made in Germany :P

You do know to use either one you would have, one or two controllers, one or two gamepads, one A/V cable, a power cord and the system.
The original system doesn't come apart, you don't fold it, you do anything with it but stick it somewhere. It takes exactly the same amount of time to put one object that's a bit larger down than it does to put a different smaller object down. A quarter and a penny take the same exact time to put on a table. It's not a tent it's a solid object, you put it in your bag then you're done.
