What's the first Resident Evil where directional controls are normal like today? I.e., "up" and "down" aren't the only ways to walk. "Left" and "Right" are not only used for turning.

>> No.1166089

4, I think. Though even that is kind of the same way with the turning.

I don't get the hate for tank controls, at least when it comes to survival horror. They're not hard to get used to.

wait... what was wrong with the controls?

Damn. 4's the only one I've played. Tried playing 1 right now on my phone.

The controls are exactly the same as in 4? Left and Right turn and Forward goes forward and Backward goes backward.

Oh, maybe it's a bit different because 4 was 3rd person if I remember correctly.

Yeah, the only real difference is the camera angle.

In the other games you're basically a fly on the wall, in 4 it's like a camera is following you.

Revelations is the first game to truly have full side stepping. Even 6 still was using a variation of the hybrid tank controls in use since 4.

Now that I think about it, the Outbreak games don't have tank controls either. I never played them personally and online has been dead since last gen so I don't know how good they are. The N64 version of RE2 has a tank-less option for controls too.

If you're interested in RE, you should try to get used to tank controls, they don't seem to be going away. Rev only had side stepping to make it easier to play with the 3DS having only one stick. I never really had a problem with the style myself, but I've been here since 1. After they added quick turn I had no complaints.

ORC has motion like what you probably want, but stay away from that at all costs.

I don't remember if it was the case in Outbreak 1, but Outbreak 2 had the Devil May Cry analog control scheme where you could move in a direction and keep holding the stick in the same direction, and you'd only have to tap to change your facing if the cameras changed angles on you. Gameplay wise, they're okay, but since there's no online play which was half the fun, well, they're nowhere near as entertaining as they once were.

The N64 version of RE2 had a "first person" control scheme where tilting the analog stick would result in the character walking in the same direction similar to Devil May Cry, if that's what you mean.

They were at least more bareable in 4 because of the camera.
Not that they were ever unbareable though

>> No.1166285

This is not a good thread. RE controls were part of game design and atmosphere. They were what made RE work. Similarly, even the RE4 controls are uniquely claustraphobic. Neither game is ever unfair, the level design and the difficulty curve expect the control scheme and work with it. If you have problems with RE or RE4, it's you not,t he controls.

>> No.1166296

Not all survival horror games need "tank" controls and fixed camera angles(I suppose), but Resident Evil just ain't Resident Evil without them.
