Post the (retro) game you think is the greatest of all-time.

Super Mario Bros. 3—greatest game of all-time?

I love you, System Shock.

Excellent choices. And here I picked a super common candidate [Super Mario Bros. 3] whenever greatest games are discussed. Nice to see some love for Frogger and System Shock—two classic retro games.

>> No.1163457

Y'know what would be interesting?

Taking the retro titles, NES for example, from the /v/ reccommended wiki and making a giant bracket tournament to find the greatest game.

Certain titles, such as zelda, megaman, and mario 3 would have to get their own bracket though instead of just steamrolling everything

>> No.1163458

We going under /vr/ definition for retro? Starcraft

More logical definition? Mario 3

>> No.1163465

>>1163457
Let's not come into contact with /v/.

>> No.1163470

>go through a short list of hot titles
>Cherry pick my favourites

>Cabal
>Cowboy kid
>Dr mario
>Zelda 1
>TMNT 1
>Super Mario, all three
>Megaman, all 6

When it comes to greatest of all time, Mario trumps Megaman, TMNT gets cut because it is personal favourite, same with Dr. Mario and Cabal, I don't care if COwboy Kid is relativly unknown, it is amazing,

So, Mario vs. Zelda vs. Cowboy Kid
Mario vs. Zelda for influence sake.

I stop there.

>> No.1163472

Not him but the /v/ recommended wiki is actually OK. A perfect example of the stopped clock adage if you ask me.

Yeah, that would be cool. I would love to see a tournament bracket of old retro games going head-to-head. Why don't you make a thread about it? You could always use Straw Poll . com for the voting. Straw Poll's website has a proxy blocker, too, so no-one would be able to cheat and vote twice on a game.

I don't blame you, Super Mario Bros 3 is a great game, and I am sure it has beaten its way into many hearts as the greatest game ever, but Frogger has a special place in my own heart. I played Frogger for many years, it was one of the only games our local arcade had actually, and they were the happiest years of my life. It is obviously a pretty subjective stance, probably driven by nostalgia, but I genuinely do believe the game may be timeless.

>>1163457
How would something like that be judged? If by vote, then all participants should be forced to play a few levels/stages of each game so the votes are handled a little more fairly. The bracket idea would be great, and we could stretch out the tournament by limiting to two games a day, the two competing for the step up.

If it is scheduled that would really allow for sampling and "informed" voting.

You could even provide links to online emulator sites.

Frogger is classic and very underrated. It's a simple idea, but it never gets old. Did you ever play the Xbox version of Frogger Beyond? That game ROCKED. (The Gamecbe version was weak, though.) Seriously, if Frogger is your game, you definitely need to check out Frogger Beyond on the Xbox. You would love it.

Super Mario 3 blew me away back in the day. The 'shock' value of discovering each new world were reaching creative highs.

Uh, what? I just like the game. SGnG can be completed pretty easily with a lot of rote memorization, just like classic Contra. Contra is still considered difficult to this day, but mostly by gamers who didn't grow up playing it and memorizing every stage's layout.

Just grab the bow during the first quest and abuse it up until you need to collect the bracelet. Defeating the bosses gets a bit more tricky with the bracelet, but thankfully, it can take them down in just a few shots.

Super Metroid, hands down.

SMB3 is in my top 3 though, the level design is incredibly tight.

My top 5 are:
>Super Metroid
>SMB3
>Link's Awakening DX
>Ocarina of Time
>Yoshi's Island

And not just in the "retro" category, delegating games to only being the best "retro" game (especially in a medium as young as this) is really trivializing their quality and making them seem far less relevant than they actually are.
