What's a good controller to use for playing old console games on the PC?

It depends on the game, there is no optimal solution for everything.
It's best to keep some variety of controllers and try out which one suits the specific purpose the best.

Depends on what you're playing and what you're playing on.

I've been trying to find a decent bluetooth controller that can work on my tablet and my laptop, since when I'm home I plug my laptop into my tv and play like that, while when i'm on the go I use my tablet since it's far more likely to be alive than my laptop. It basically never dies.

Closest I've gotten to that so far is a Wii U Pro Controller, but it's far from perfect. Maybe I should've gotten that Pro Wii U Controller I heard so much about instead.

It's absurd to opt for the worst choice and pay more for it.

I'll admit there's also a slight degree of hate transmission, where /vr/ project all its hate for the Xbox 360 to everything 360, so the controller somehow(which is a great controller sans the battery placement and DPAD) is also guilty of ruining games for them.

Recently I've been using my DS3, but I plan on getting original USB controllers.

Also, has anyone else had problems emulating Parappa The Rapper? I think my rom is fucking up where every time the onion guy says a command, I'm supposed to press the button then instead of when Parappa repeats it. I think this because I can hit them perfectly, but it doesn't count and when I'm at AWFUL, the next time he starts to say something, it automatically fails before Parappa can repeat it like I was supposed to press the button then. Or am I supposed to do that anyways? I've never played this.

Totally depends on the game. A fighting stick would be the best for playing fighting games and useless for playing N64 games that use the analog stick.

The best option is probably get an adapter that converts original controllers to USB so you can play with the original controls or third party versions if you find those better.

In my personal experience the 360 dpad on the older models isnt precise enough for classic nes games. I often get incorrect presses like tring to crouch makes me move left/right.

Using the analog is the best solution for this but of you do I recommend using some type of kemap software to adjust the diagonal sensitivity (like xpadder) otherwise you will be crawling all over the place

Because they are bad, you may have learned to compensate for it like driving a car with poor alignment.

Its about smoothness of motion and transition. Its a lot easier, faster, and more natural to just rock my thumb from one direction to another then use three fingers making separate button bushes.

Its not impossible to use one, but its definitely not as good.

The Xbox 360 controller's d-pad is terrible if you need to use more than two directions on it, and using an analogue stick for digital input is bad and you should feel bad.

I've been using PS1 controllers (original and Dual Shock) with a USB adaptor for years.

I only noticed recently that the d-pad on one has actually cracked on the inside - the left button now moves independently from the rest of the pad. It still works but feels weird.

I also had to remove the vibration motors from one of them as the mounts had broken and they were banging off the inside of the controller casing. JAPAN QUALITY.

I can't, for the life of me, imagine why people use third party controllers. I assume they're either poor or stupid, possibly both.

Even programmable controllers aren't worth dealing with. The only exception is when there's a peripheral that more closely approximates the arcade controls for a particular game - of course then you're still trying to play as the developers intended.

Well the N64 not designed for aliens was pretty good. Also iirc there were a couple out there that had better joysticks too since N64 had the cheapest stick I've ever seen.

There was a one handed controller I think for PS1 that was pretty good, sounds stupid but it was great for RPGs...and friends who had broken their arm.

Some awesome DDR pads made by third party that were arcade quality.

I could pull a few more out of my ass off hand, but it starts going out of retro at that point.
