1158557 No.1158557[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Hey /vr/, I have some questions about FFVIII. I'm on Disc 2 and I'm gonna go to Balamb when Galbadia has taken over. So far, Squall is at Lv. 50 while the rest of the party is around 21-26.

Should I just continue playing or try to even up the levels?

Also, what are the best magic to junction stats to?

>> No.1158572

Since Squall is mandatory in the party it will be hard to even levels.

Also the game has level sacling, enemies and bosses scale to the overall level of your current party (except for one optional dungeon and one optional boss)
Enemies gets their best magics to draw as well as their best item drops at lvl 30 so you're fine with that, in other words, no reason to lvl up past lvl30. If you want to get stronger try to get more and better magics; but I find the game the most fair and interesting if you just go with the flow and do things little by little (draw a bit here and there, convert magics from items you get along the way into magic, play a bit of card to convert into magic, etc)

>> No.1158575

Enemies scale to your level, so it's likely that the enemies are around 35 or so (the divided sum of your party's level). It would be wise to even up your levels, but you'd be better served by playing cards then modding those cards into magic so you can junction them. Junctioning is far more important than levels in this game.

>> No.1158586

Also, if your aim is to get as strong as possible, it is adviced to wait until your teach your GFs the "stat +" abitilies before doing serious leveling up.

For example once you learn STR+ or HP+, your strength and HP will gain slightly more points for each lvl (as long as it's equipped for a character)

also I said it'd be hard to even up lvls, but well, i guess you can kill Squall... that sounds pretty dumb to me though. If all you do is lvl up everybody else to 50 (without getting more magics), enemies will be lvl50 instead of your current 35 and thus the game will be harder.

>>1158586
Lv.35, huh? I guess I'll try to avoid leveling up now.

If you considered trying to break the game trying to get strong, then yeah.

>> No.1158629

I power leveled my characters hard because I didn't know enemies got stronger with your level, and I still breezed through the endgame. It's definitely one of the easier RPGs I've played. I suggest just playing it like any other RPG, you shouldn't have any extra difficulty. Reading into it too much will stress you out about aspects of the game that won't hamper you as much as it'll sound.

>> No.1158637

I doubt you can even lose in FFVIII, so advice on decreasing challenge in the game is just silly.

I agree with that. For a first playthrough just go with your flow, THEN you can try to fuck around the system as much as you want if you replay it. That's what I did, I must have replayed it like 8-10 times, and each time i'd learn something new in the gameplay or small things in the story.

http://guides.gamercorner.net/ffviii/spells/

Personally, I have 100 full-lifes junctioned to everyone's HP. It's decent magic to junction to HP. Also, 100 triples to STR.

100 Meteors junctioned to Elem-Def gives you 150% protection from wind and earth.

>> No.1159097

>>1158557
iiirc, enemies only scale to Squall's level. Since you can raise stats easier with junctions than levels, there's no reason for you to balance levels unless you want to.

Also, the following list is the strongest junction load out:

HP: Tornado
Str: Triple
Vit: Meltdown
Mag: Flare
Spr: Curaga
Spd: Haste
Evade: Stop
Hit%: Double
Luck: Aura

Elemental Defense: Full-Life, Ultima, Shell, Life

Status Attack: Drain
Status Defense: Holy, Esuna, Pain, Reflect

Please note that this set up isn't about maximizing each stat, it's about minimizing damage. For instance, Reflect is actually the best junction for SPR, and Ultima is good anywhere. However, with these spells buffing Elemental and Status def, you'll hardly be touched.

>emo-ness
You know last-decade emo kids didn't actually invent the idea of personal introspection and inner monologue? Or because he wears black?

Well I much prefer a quiet reserved hero like Squall or Cloud than some arrogant guy who is all about banging chicks. Ooooooh ho ho ho ho hahahahhaah. HAR HAR HAR.

Get it? A GF? HAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh I crack myself up. Oh my goodness.

Actually, it is. No one is going to tear the junction system apart if it's the first time they are playing the game, if they are still young not to completely grasp the abstract concept and possibilities of the junction system and if they're not using a walkthrough (or lurking boards/forums) to aid them.

If you had some experience with RPGs previous to playing with FFVIII, I can understand why being 14 might not be an excuse since you should grasp the combat system more easily since you're likely used to adapting. But in any other situation, it's a perfectly valid excuse.

And? Just because you understood it, doesn't mean you'll be able to use it properly and in a game-broking way. People who say it did on the first playthrough are very seasoned in RPGs, have above average cognitive capacity that generally gets them thinking outside the box (perfect for RPGs such as FF8) or are liars. Everyone else who mastered the junction system did it out of experience (such as myself) or by reading FAQs and boards/forums posts.

The game rewards you for using GFs at first. Let me lay this out for you.

1. I get 3 GFs at the very beginning of the game. My max party is 3 characters.
2. I can use my GFs to shield me from attacks. Extra damage allowed.
3. My GF ATB meter is reduced the more I use them. Incentive to use them more and more.
4. GF's abilities are set to GF HP +10% or GF Max Dam +10%. If I'm using GFs, I'm going to start maxing out these.
5. The very first boss I'm told to use Shiva, another GF. So the game is already implying I should rely on GFs.
6. I draw magic, but because I don't know that the amount of drawn magic is linked to my MAG stat, I'm drawing about 3 or 4 spells. Tedious and boring.
7. I'm not using Triple Triad at first because I don't have good cards and some places have complex rules that make the thing difficult. I need to wait until I get GF cards to start exploring Triple Triad.

This is pretty much the mindset that is imposed to the player in the first playthrough. It's wrong but it's how the game plays with you for sticking to conventional rules. Basically the game shits all over you and penalizes you for not exploring it properly and taking things at face value. Use the Auto button all you want. If you have crap-tier magic, it's not gonna change anything.

Disregard a lot of this. The best setup for maxing out your stats, which is what matters, is the following:

HP: Ultima (+6000 HP; bypasses the need to use HP Bonus for several characters to attain max HP)
STR: Meteor (+75 STR; the second best after Ultima)
VIT: Meltdown (+80 VIT; again, the second best)
MAG: Flare (+44 MAG; the fifth best, but all other options will be better applied in other things that are more crucial than MAG; disregard this if you're using Rinoa's Angel wing - you'll want to maximize MAG if you're using it)
SPR: Reflect (+72 SPR; third best, but you'll want to use Full-Life someplace else)
SPD: Triple (+70 SPD; best one, not even Ultima touches this one)
Evade: Tornado (+13 EVD; third best)
Hit: Double (+40; fourth best)
Luck: Aura (+60; second best after Ultima)

Elemental Defense: Full-Life, Shell, Life and Protect (+90% damage reduction for ALL elemental damage and +10% damage absorption for Fire, Thunder and Ice)

Status Defense: Pain, Death, Confusion and Berserk (you'll be vulnerable to Zombie, Sleep, Petrify, Slow and Stop but none of these things can wreck your party; you'll be completely immune against Poison, Darkness, Silence, Curse, Berserk, Death, Confusion; feel free to switch them around depending on what enemy you're fighting).

Yeah it would take several days just to buy/sell items and refine in order to max out everything. How boring.

That is why the best solution is to NOT lvlup your characters until your GFs learn the STR+, SPR+, Mag+ etc abilities, then set them to one character and lvl them up one character at a time in order to get the stat bonuses for everyone. That's still incredibly boring though but not as much as spending several days solely in shops and refining menues....

Doing a no level up game is a lot easier and less time consuming than people think. Just get 5 Abyss Worm cards and buy 10 Tents and you instantly have a broken character than can carry on the game on its own.

Then fight the fixed Elnoyle encounter in Esthar to level up Squall and Quistis, separately using the Bonus abilities until they get to level 100. Should take no more than 6 hours, maybe even less. Finally travel to Island Closer to Hell and use Degenerator to level up the remaining 4 characters. Takes about 10 hours, tops, and your characters will be nearly maxed out. Much less time consuming than any other FF.

Get the strategy guide (or print a magic junction FAQ) and abuse the junctioning system. All you need to do is have your GFs learn various magic refining abilities, then use those to refine items (or low level magic) into high level magic.

Since the game uses a para leveling system, enemies level up as you do. What you want to do is avoid leveling on purpose to keep enemies consistently weak, and abuse junctioned stats to make your party overpowered for every situation.

The second thing you want to abuse is limit breaks. You can either use aura to keep spamming Renzokuken, or use the select-cancel trick while your party's HP is low. What you do is cancel a character's turn when their command window appears, and when it reappears, there's a chance their limit break will become available.

>> No.1175726

Ultimecia isn't that hard if your party has, at least, 100 meteor junctioned in elem-def. That covers her last two final forms' most powerful attacks.

After that, just make sure you have a lot of Auras.

Having Quistis in your party with a bunch of Auras ready (so she can use white wind) is very helpful.

Then just spam renzokuken. She goes down quicker if you spam ultima as well. Even quicker if you spam triple ultimate with at least one person in your party.
