Hi /vr/. I'm a big fan of Final Fantasy Tactics (and though not retro, FFTA). What are your favorite SRPGs? I was thinking about giving pic related a try.

Also, I know Fire Emblem is probably the most popular series, but I've never played any of them either.

>> No.1158149

The PSP remake of tactics ogre is fantastic, and the Disgaea series is a pretty silly and stylish grid based SRPG with less emphasis on strategy and more on "breaking the game." Ever play Ogre Battle 64? It's sort of an RTS/RPG hybrid and it might be just the thing your'e looking for.

>> No.1158161

I'm trying to find a way to emulate the PSP version of Tactics Ogre but I'm not really having any luck with it. Shame because I loved the PSX version. In a lot of ways it was a lot better than Final Fantasy Tactics (which I loved)

Vandal Hearts and Kartia are pretty good. Nothing stellar but still worth a play. Vandal Hearts is more like Fire Emblem than anything else though.

There's an emulator but it doesn't work with x64 systems ; . ;

That aside, Tactics OgreLUCT/MOtBQtop notch stuff in terms of construction. The story for these games won't be quite as deep as Lion War because they were made before, but they shine amazingly well. Something to keep in mind with LUCT is that the scenario composition was done during the Yugoslav Wars, if you're old enough to remember them.

Heck, from all accounts LUCT is beter with the PSP release over the original releases. Fire Emblem is alright, but it feels constricting somehow when compared to tactics ogre. Advance Wars was a blast for the DS, I'm not sure how it's 3DS companions made out.

X-COM Enemy Unknown is a fun srpg with base management. If you can find it on sale, take a look. It has a unique doom clock countdown kind of feel that Tactics/Disgaea and others tend to avoid.

If he might be interested in Ogre Battle 64, it may be worth checking out Ogre Battle MOTBQ first, since some of the characters introduced in 64 originally appeared in MOTBQ

Front Mission 4 or 5 may be worth a look as well. The primary difference is that it's a scifi srpg with mecha known as "wanzers" typically dealing with armies and special ops.

Eh, the psp emulator I was looking at refused to work on x64 systems. That doesn't mean there are emulators that do work with x64 systems. I just haven't gone looking hard enough for them since I had a psp anyway.

>> No.1158228

I always preferred tactics games with job based systems, I hate it when the roster is 20 main characters with their own unique shtick and you can just tack on some sub abilities like Wild Arms XF or Luminous Arc.

That being said after the Final Fantasy, Tactics Ogre and Disgaea series I find myself lacking games to play that fit the bill. There were apparently a good 3 or 4 for the PSX that never got an English release and making a translation patch is impossible for whatever reason.

The Langrisser series are amazing.
I remember someone posting a pack with all games and a bunch of miscelaneous stuff back when /vr/ was first created and I fell in love.

I think it was called "Ultimate Langrisser Torrent by Team Shika Shika"

>> No.1158410

>>1158149

The remake is awful and ruins the game. Mainly due to its completely retarded hit rates (pretty much nothing is guaranteed to hit, even from the back or the sides), slower pacing due to much lower damage (before any good hit left you dying or outright killed you), much lower challenge (the aforementioned lower damage that punishes you way less for thoughtless actions, cheap resurrection items right from the start), dumb skill learning system... I was really looking forward to playing it since I loved the original, but was vastly dissapointed.

There's also Vanguard Bandits. It's basically a lot of concepts from Front Mission with medieval style combat (Melee weapons like swords and spears with more magic-like abilities).

I would suggest they they increased the effect avd has on dodge. since I often have units that are a level or two lower than the enemy managing to avoid attacks.

Sometimes challenge for challenge's sake can be objected to from a perspective of what's fun. I'd also suggest that you probrably have more experience in sRPGS then you did during the remake leading to you making fewer punishing mistakes. Punishing mistakes in the remake are still painful, and there are still occasionally times when using non-optimal parties that I'll mess up and finish a map with four incaps and three people in red.

"Cheap" resurrection items at 2000 goth, when you are largely playing story missions and fewer random missions seems a bit disingenuous since overall goth earnings seem lower.

Did the grindy nature of some of the skills urk you?

>>1158228
Front mission has a smaller class count than others but it certainly has distinct wanzer classes that pilots can be slotted into based on player preference and it can allow for some interesting combinations.

But...I'm playing WAXF and the job system is really similar to FFT.
You can make generics, change their jobs, get unique abilities, mix and match those abilities to create destructive combos, etc
I'm not sure I get what you mean.

>> No.1158748

>>1158732

Each class is relegated to something like 4 skills, also there are so many forced story character battles that it's rare to use your own full team of generics.

The mixing and matching of abilities was cool, shame that even with passives the list is small.

>> No.1158752

>>1158721

The problem with the first one was that eventually everyone would have the same set-up because it was the best one for everyone, since apart from Machine Guns and rockets all the other weapons have 1 box range.

>> No.1158753

>>1158748

Oh the forced class battles bugged me aswell, it was an interesting idea to integrate puzzles into some missions like pushing items around and the stealth ones but I found it to be more annoying.

They should have set it up so that if you did those things you'd receive some kind of benefit but otherwise you can finish the mission without.

Front Mission is a great game, the only downside is >>1158752 , there is often one best setup, so your entire squad winds up using the same mech.

Fire Emblem is fun, but hard as balls if you try to do a recruit all characters/no deaths run without save scrumming every turn.

Super Robot Wars can be fun as well, but some of the missions last way to damn long or have bizarre victory conditions.

Jagged Alliance (the first one) can also be fun, but it plays ridiculously slow. Sparky is best merc

If you can't play the PSP tactics ogre for whatever reason, get the translation patch for the SNES version. It's pretty much the PS1 version without slowdown after that. You should also give the GBA entry a whirl after that.

That is difficult, and some of the hidden stages in 4 are pretty damn hard but other than that the series as a whole is easy as hell. That's probably my only problem with the games to be honest, I love Langrisser but Christ they're easy.

>>1160494
Difficulty can be subjective (for lack of better words) in many SRPG's. Take Langrisser #1 for example.

In one level you get attacked by werewolves+actual wolves from the left. If you don't want to recruit their leader later in the game, its pretty easy. Trying to fight the werewolves without hitting their leader whilst not getting your own characters killed is hard. In addition, if you've read a guide and know that zombies spawn from the right then they aren't't an issue, if you havn't then it force you to restart.

Another example is the level where you have to rush to get the sword. If you have lots of flying characters than it's easy, but if you don't than it's hard.
