I use Maya. There are cracked versions all over the place. Best modeler I've used. But if you're not doing animations at all I'd look into Wings 3D. It's free and easy to model/uv/texture in, and if nothing needs animated it's definitely easier/faster than milkshape imo.

I just want to ask. Does anyone here remember or know of pyewad? It was on Skulltag.

It was easily one of the most fun DM servers I ever went on. The last time it was updated was probably 07/08.

The map rotation was great they were all fun and very different. Went from a room where you're supposed to be a mouse, to a canyon level, to a snowball fight, to an airplane, to trench warfare, to the Starship Enterprise, and more.

I played on this server every night when it was up. Then it stopped and became outdated with skulltag. Just curious if anyone here would remember

I do know a little bit about blender, I made a basic sword for Oblivion using it. Milkshape was the first 3d editor I dabbled with, mostly because of the excellent support for games at the time. Now, back to topic. In its own words, this is a set of “small, fairly hard maps with high body-counts, and gameplay I would describe as chaotic-evil”. That means, prepare to rage and cry tears of blood since MAP01

Lydia is the main character in the mod I'm working on. Yes it will be a "TC" but I'm not really sure if I'll change the balance of the weapons too terribly much. I won't be using any of the Doom art or sound assets because I want it to be as original as possible. Namewise, I haven't come up with anything cool yet. I was thinking something like "Lethal Injection" since it deals with psychotic drugs or something along those lines, but nothing is set in stone yet. Lydia herself is "done" as she has a complete spriteset, weapon hands, mugshot, and sounds. She even has a unique pistol and her own class so she doesn't overwrite the marine. As for Lydia, I haven't really come up with a lot other than the name and a tiny bit of background. I was thinking she was a former corporate assassin who decided to change her life around and wound up being a private detective or something. Except for a freeware game project I wanted to do but can't code either, that I would finish with the right coder.

Also 40'000 wasn't planned to have all the races at first, just Orks and Imperial Guard (and perhaps other Imperium such as Inquisitors and selective space marines). But it can't be done on a small scale with the ability to hold thousands of enemies at once, which was the whole concept to be done in DOOM.

Also, may or may not be a stupid question, I'm new to HD. Started off with the rifleman class, with the select fire and underslung grenade launcher. Got to the second level, and can no longer pick up other rifles, I don't get the prompt to swap anymore. Also, while I was still able to swap my rifle, it wouldn't immediately swap, I would have to hit the "4" to drop my currently equipped rifle key after pressing and holding the "Use" key to pick up the one found on the floor. They jam, they've got cookoff problems, and the damage is less than optimal. The Liberator battle rifle doesn't suck, but has really rare ammo. When you're "picking up" a rifle, you're really just taking the powder. You can see how much you've got by checking the hud and looking at the rifle mag count. If the icon is red, that means you're full on powder and can't pick up rifles anymore. Unfortunately, you also can't get rid of this powder until you've got some brass (obtained from firing the battle rifle and picking up the casings), so you might just be screwed if you can't find a battle rifle.

This... This truly is bullshit. It's an E1M6 modification where 90% of textures are grey, there's way too many monsters, pits abound, and a good deal of map elements that are doors and required switches don't have proper texturing. The ones that DO don't even use the textures right. The map looks ugly, plays like shit, and the most unforgivable thing in the wad ever happens: There's a door that doesn't even look like a door. You press it, and it opens... but not enough. You enter the room through crouching with a source port, and "YOU FOUND A SECRET!" appears. All fine and dandy, I guess, until you find the RED KEY. A REQUIRED ELEMENT TO COMPLETING THE MAP. AND YOU CAN'T EVEN ACCESS IT IN VANILLA IN A 'NILLA-ORIENTED MAP? BULLSHIT!

The straw that broke the camel's back had to be the fact that the end level switch is a random-ass wall texture out of nowhere. Much wall-humping happened. If you don't know E1M6's design, you'll have a lot of trouble. It's terrible. Don't play it.

Sadly, there's not a lot. It seems to be pretty common with wad makers to design their wads super tightly, with each section having a very specific solution to overcoming the challenge based on the properties of a particular weapon (BFG sections are the worst offender here). Which in my opinion is a really lazy approach to design.

The Scythe wads work pretty well, as does Stardate 20X6.

this map comes from the days before anyone figured out the BSP format, so the only map editing that could be done was retexuring and editing of line specials and thing layouts. in those days, it was assumed that if you were looking for new levels you had played the originals to utter exhaustion, and in particular knew the layout of E1M6 to the extent of being able to sketch it on the back of a napkin without looking.

not to make too many excuses, it is a confusing edit and also the baron in sector 145 seems impossible to kill without rocketing the wall above it (you can't jump in, it's a damage sector with no way out) but i think when put into historical context it's nowhere near as awful as you claim it to be.

I can't remember the specific name of the map, but it opened up to a huge open room, tons and tons of various enemies, with an arachnotron dead ahead, as well as to the left and to the right, and down every large open hall there was another huge crowd waiting to maul you. The levels prior had a fair amount of enemies as well, but they were in more manageable clusters.
Like I said, it could just be because I'm playing with Brutal Doom, which does increase the difficulty a bit, but I eventually just gave up and decided I would try again later with a different wad, like Russian Overkill.

Still, it wasn't as much of a piss-off as DTS-T was.

Yeah, I might try replaying it on a lower difficulty, or just with a different wad. I'm not really a huge fan of slaughter wads/maps. Especially when they just kinda surprise you with it as well, it seems sorta normal at first, maybe more enemies than your average wad, but then it drops you into a straight up slaughter map, so annoying.
Which is exactly what DTS-T did, it was fantastic to start off, it was some really fun and aesthetically pleasing levels, with normal amounts of enemies, then partway through it just becomes a slaughter wad.

I'll have to give both of those a try.

As for it feeling different, I don't really think so. It makes the gameplay a lot faster paced, and makes the difficulty curve steeper (it starts a lot lower because of the better beginning weapons, and winds up a fair bit higher due to the tougher late game enemies), but the basic gameplay elements that make Doom what it is are all there, unless you define Doom by limitations of its engine.

Brutal Doom: Good or Bad?

In a Technical aspect, it's fantastic.


We have to consider the technical aspects of the game, and how it differs from doom. I mean, people have like, multiple death animations, they can split into body parts, etc. So that's pretty impressive.

The guy seems to have reworked a LOT of the graphics and stuff. Imp's fireballs and the Lost Souls are good examples.

All the enemies have been worked to be WAY more aggressive. Which I guess means cutting their "idle" time in half, and doubling their walking speed.
Enemies will quickly cut the distance between you and them. They aggressively pursue you, and their attacks are relentless and devastating, both visually and detrimentally.

There's a visual screen effect factor that intensifies the engagements. Nearby explosions cause screenshakes, but these can also be caused by heavy footsteps. It's pretty effective.

Damage has been increased on both sides. You can kill enemies faster than before, and they can kill YOU faster than before. This serves to both increase the gameplay and slow it down simultaneously. Running out into the fray and just strafing around all the projectiles doesn't work this time with the enemies' new found speed and aggressiveness. This means battles can take longer, because you have to be more careful and wear down their forces from cover or a superior position. But you actually killing an enemy takes less time, because the damage of your weapons has been increased.

There are new enemy mechanics. The shotgun guys actually reload their weapons. And Imps will jump at you when they're trying to kill you.
Cyberdemon's can step on people now, and the pinkies can step up higher elevations... All the enemies have been affected.

And I haven't even touched on the player mechanics.

The player weapon graphics are some of the best I've ever seen. Firstly, every weapon has new graphics and mechanics. The animations are incredible compared to other mods/to the original. The number of frames in each animation is much higher than what I've seen. There seems to be actual movement rather than sorting through frames. That's probably because some of the frames "move" rather than change to a new frame. The animations look pretty good. Recoil has also been added, and it's pretty apparent for some weapons.


The rifle replaces the pistol, and is one of my most favorite things about BD. And before you call me a COD babby, aiming down the sight is not inherently bad. The rifle gives you options you didn't have the previous game. It's pretty strong, too. Now you can have long range battles with other gun-havers, and I THINK you can get headshots to end the fights quicker, which is neat.

The rifle is automatic, but you can Aim down your sight to switch to semi-auto. It's a pretty smooth transition; I haven't seen anything like it in another mod. And I love that sound. The rifle has a 20 round magazine, and reloads. The one thing I hate is the rifle reloading sound. It's pretty awful. Other than that, it's excellent.


The shotgun can also aim down the sight, which is nice for far away targets. The shotgun fires faster than before, but has to be reloaded. The reloading mechanic works pretty well. Doomguy reloads one shell at a time. He still pulls the pump even if it wasn't emptied, but oh well. The shotgun sounds are very good to listen to.

The Super Shotgun is ANOTHER one of my favorite things about Brutal Doom. The Alt-Fire allows you to fire one barrel at a time. This can be fantastic for certain situations, because it gives you a semi-automatic shotgun, albeit with only 2 shells. You can reload any time there's at least one barrel empty, and there are separate animations for one barrel reloading or two. A very good piece.

The chain gun has been very powered up, since the rifle is about as effective relatively as the old chaingun. The new chaingun fires at a much faster rate. Unfortunately, it's also way less accurate. The sound is excellent to listen to, and enemies don't really stand a chance when you're unloading this weapon. Alt-fire allows you to spin the barrel so you can fire without delay.

With the Shotgun and chain gun, I have to mention what I believe is the absolute WORST thing about BD: corpses block shots.
This is extremely aggravating, as a room full of badguys can keep coming at you when their bretheren are shielding them.

Not much to say about the rocket launcher. It has a reloading magazine, which is annoying in this case. Has new animations and such. Explosions, too. Explosions in this game look more like Duke Nukem explosions.

The plasma gun ALSO has to be reloaded, which can be aggravating. But it is extremely powerful in this mod, so maybe that's ok. An alt-fire allows you to shoot 5 or so bolts at once, like a plasma shotgun.
When hit with plasma, enemies will become charred. Enemies also have a tendency to catch fire and run around, or get disemboweled and stand there, suffering. The game has plenty of new mechanics.

BFG. Someone said they turned it into a big green rocket, and they're probably right. I don't think the BFG acts like it did in the original. Still a powerful weapon, though.

The chainsaw has been boosted in damage power in this one, and the animation looks much better. The sprite is actually vibrating in such a way that looks pretty nice. The chainsaw can get blood on it.

There's a melee mechanic in this game. You can kick anytime, but depending on what you're doing, there might be a delay, which can be bad. For instance, you can't immediately kick while reloading your weapon. This is bad if an enemy is coming at you, and kind of ruins the point of the kick.
Kicking isn't about damage so much as knocking an enemy down or away to buy you some time. Which is why it sucks that it isn't instantaneous all the time. You can do a jump kick for more damage.

That being said, mod guy made this to where melee attacks do not warn enemies of your whereabouts, so that's good. You have two punches. A quick jab, and a harder cross punch. The cross punch does more knockback and damage. Also, if you sneak up behind a weaker enemy (zombies), and do the hard punch, you have a chance of silently ending them. Which can be nice if you want to start the scuffle with just one less shotgun pointed at your face.

The berserk pack allows you to perform brutal fatalities. If you finish someone with a cross punch, the camera exits doomguy to show him finishing the thing off. The bigger the enemy, the cooler the takedown animation.
But if that's not your thing, you can 'reload' to switch to smash mode, where you just punch them. Doomguy is invincible during the animation, and earns bonus health (like 10 or something) when it's done. Good timing means you could take on 3 pinkies and get 30+ health out of it.

He's obviously talented, but may need a push into the right direction.

Without them his mod would not have been possible.
