Yeah the graphics are complete ass, the game is full of little things that can completely screw you over later, and it's disturbingly easy to put yourself into a unwinnable situation, but damn I had fun with that game. Even with the boxing.

One of the better movie licensed games on the PC. Still own the "Grail Diary" that came with it, one of the coolest feelies I've ever seen.

I think he's talking about how many games eventually tried to clone Myst, which I'm not sure how you can blame Myst for that, given that Myst was the only good series out of all of the clones, and it's not like Cyan told everyone to do it.
There were loads of comedy adventure games after the success of Monkey Island, too.

I didn't think of Myst's puzzles as particularly challenging, just really tedious. All in all, throughout the game I've made one or two dozen screenshots of info I needed for puzzles, and flipped several hundred switches, all the different switches of course being on different screens so that I always had to click my way through a whole fucking Age several times just to get a damn elevator working or whatever. But yes, at least the puzzles were logical for the most part.

>> No.1158729

I'm not sure about tedium. Most of the answers were plain in the books, though that in itself is kinda tedious if you're really immersed into one of the ages and don't want to go back.
What was really tedious was the submarine part in the rocket age. How the hell is anyone supposed to remember all those directions?

RIP Roy Conrad.
>Roy was one of the sweetest guys you'll ever meet, and a joy to work with. It was hilarious to watch him act, and see that stern, gravelly voice of Ben coming out of this gentle, soft-spoken man. Casting Roy was definitely the easiest decision we ever had to make at LucasArts. We had been through boxes of audition tapes without much luck--When you advertise that you're looking for a tough, biker character, you get a lot of guys trying to be tough; Growling, yelling, and forcing a lot of attitude--And then we put in Roy's tape, and out came this effortless, deep, rich, bass sound. And that was that. We didn't even listen to another tape.

I've never heard anybody mention that game before. Personally, I really liked that game.

As far as traditional Adventure games, I'd probably pick Hero's Quest/Quest for Glory 1 since I've yet to play any of the other games in that series. I should really rectify that.

Also the Phoenix Wright games, but yeah, not /vr/ and they're kind of a hybrid between Adventure and Visual Novel.

Just because it's new and popular, doesn't mean it's bad.

#4 Legend of Kyrandia 3: Malcolm's Revenge
The mood meter, the various paths to get off the island, and the fun of playing the villain of the series really make this game stand out. Also, the guy who plays Malcolm sounds a lot like Mark Hamil (somewhat like when he played Hobgoblin in the Spiderman animated series). Does anyone know somewhere that lists the voice actors? The credits don't list who did what.

#3 King's Quest 6

Excellent voice acting, a few different ways to solve certain puzzles, and the first King's Quest to use actual logic instead of throwing a pie at a Yeti or using a backwards alphabet to create an unpronounceable name. Also, probably the best in terms of a real story in the series rather than front and back loading the whole tale.

The divergent paths and another case of great voice acting. The puzzles were also varied and interesting. I'm very happy they decided to make Plato's translated diary digital, otherwise I certainly couldn't play it today.

I particularly liked the way Doug Lee played Indy. He didn't sound like Harrison Ford, but he really did sound like Indiana Jones. I know that sounds weird, but if you try playing Staff of Kings (I wouldn't suggest actually playing it) you can hear what someone doing a bad Harrison Ford impression trying to do Indy sounds like. Also, Jane Jacobs has a great voice.

The mark of a good adventure game is when you're stuck on a puzzle so long that when you look up a hint online you go "OH MAN WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?!" but the mark of a bad one is when you look up a hint and you go "Oh man, so glad I looked that up because I would have NEVER figured that out!" Clara Bow and the Dagger of Amon Ra, you fucking heartless bitch only gave me bad endings.

It may have the VGA graphics and point and click interface to give you a false sense of security, but the game is still text-parser era hard and unforgiving.

It's not my favorite adventure game, but it fucking beat me, showing me my place.

My fave is Maniac Mansion.

I have to grudgingly give Heavy Rain some props for enabling people to play together again. I had lots of fun playing it with friends, shouting at the TV like sassy black women in a movie theater.

Friend of mine played it with his brother and mother, staying up all night to see the ending in one session.

I used to play Maniac Mansion with my older brother on the C64 when I was a little kid, it tought me some basic english (as second language).
