I mostly play old games(Doom, XCom, Blood, Warcraft, ...) on legacy hardware or map for Doom.

Yeah Doom/Quake were great as were some of the build games like Duke3D/Blood/Redneck Rampage

but there were also a shit ton of shovelware doom clones. Remember doom clones? Thats what FPS games USED to be called. Some games get praise that I never understood, like Rise of the Triad which just feels like a giant clusterfuck of a game with no real direction. But yeah I do enjoy the older style FPS were it was runnin and gunnin instead of chuggin and ducking. I dont care about all the types of machine guns, I just want one gun that is called machine gun. I want the weapons to have some feel to it. The weapons in a lot of earlier FPS games had such good feel to them, it just felt good to shoot things with it. My personal favorite being the shotgun from Doom. Guns in modern games feel like pussy cap guns. Bah I say! BAH!!

Actually, Rise of the Triad was supposed to be a different game but someone killed the license... so they made up some random plot about cult terrorists. Ignore the plot, just play the game for the fun of shooting drunken missiles at eachother while hopping on trampolines while enjoying shrooms mode while a polka plays in the background.

It's like a poor man's Serious Sam, which isn't to say it isn't enjoyable, but it just goes through the motions of just dumping enemies into an arena and leaving you to figure it out.

As >>1154307 mentioned, there is a heavy emphasis on sword play. This is mainly due to a lot of the guns being underpowered.

New Lo Wang is pretty much a generic action hero with an azn accent (the unintentional racism is there if you look for it). Not offensive like old Wang, and not half as entertaining.

Humor is hit and miss. A lot of early jokes fall flat, bear with it, it gets better.

Later fights can be no fun on harder difficulties when they start spamming minibosses.

Ammo drops are random. Make of this what you will.

Level design can be spotty. You can walk into an area and difficulty will spike for no reason, only for it to go back to a mooncakewalk afterwards.

In spite of all the rough edges, the game manages to be pretty enjoyable for the mindless shooter it is.

It had an A+ solo campaign that was really very imaginative and well executed, but it came to be considered the pinnacle of FPS multiplayer and that has NEVER made since to me. Just compare it to Perfect Dark.
